In 1942, Peggy Guggenheim opened a gallery called Art of This Century on West 57th Street in New York. The space was designed by the architect Frederick Kiesler, and it looked like nothing anyone had seen before. Paintings hung from the ceiling on pulleys so viewers could pull them forward and examine them closely. The walls were curved. The lighting was theatrical. Guggenheim was 33 years old, and she had inherited a fortune. She used it to buy paintings by Jackson Pollock before Pollock was Pollock, by Mark Rothko before Rothko was Rothko, by Robert Motherwell before anyone outside a small circle of artists had heard his name. She gave Pollock his first solo exhibition in 1943 and a stipend of $150 a month so he could paint full-time. Without Peggy Guggenheim, there might be no Jackson Pollock as we know him. That is what a gallerist does.
A gallerist is a person who owns and operates a commercial art gallery, representing artists and selling their work to collectors, museums, and institutions. The word distinguishes the gallery owner from a dealer who simply buys and resells. A gallerist builds a program: a roster of artists whose careers the gallerist develops over years or decades through exhibitions, art fair participation, publications, and relationships with collectors and curators. The gallerist is part advocate, part business manager, part tastemaker, and part salesperson.

A gallerist represents artists. Representation means the gallery agrees to show the artist's work, promote it, and sell it, usually taking a commission of 50 percent on primary sales. The gallerist organizes solo and group exhibitions in the gallery space, typically on a schedule of six to eight shows per year. The gallerist also places works with collectors, negotiates museum donations and acquisitions, and participates in art fairs to reach international audiences.
Beyond selling, the gallerist invests in the artist's career. This can mean funding studio production, publishing catalogues, organizing museum loans, and placing works in institutional collections to build the artist's resume. Lorna York, founder of Madison Gallery in Solana Beach, California, described the role in 2025: "Gallerists today must be translators, not just sellers. We're bridging artists and audiences across continents, platforms, and generations." York opened her gallery in 2001 with no outside investors and built it into a $50 million business by taking what she calls "a personal, long-view approach to every artist and collector." The gallerist also sets prices. Pricing contemporary art is not a science. It depends on the artist's exhibition history, critical reception, institutional support, comparable sales, and the gallerist's read on what the market will bear. The commercial gallery as we know it emerged in 19th-century Paris. Before that, artists sold through guilds, academies, and direct patronage. The Salon system allowed artists to exhibit publicly, but it did not sell. The first modern art dealer was Paul Durand-Ruel, who began buying paintings from the Barbizon School in the 1850s and later became the primary dealer for the Impressionists. Durand-Ruel purchased works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Pissarro in bulk, often buying entire studio contents, and he held inventory for years waiting for the market to catch up. He was bankrupted multiple times. He was also right.
The word "gallerist" itself is newer. It entered common usage in the late 20th century, borrowed from French and German, to distinguish gallery owners from itinerant dealers. The term implies a curatorial dimension: a gallerist has a program, a point of view, and a stable of artists, while a dealer may simply trade. Galerie Gmurzynska, founded in Cologne in 1965 by Polish-born Antonina Gmurzynska, exemplifies the model. Now operating from Zurich and New York under three generations of female leadership, the gallery celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2026 by moving its New York operations to the Fuller Building at 595 Madison Avenue, a building that once housed Pierre Matisse, Andre Emmerich, and Robert Miller. Guggenheim opened Art of This Century in 1942 and closed it in 1947. In five years, she gave first solo shows to Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell, and Clyfford Still. She was the first gallerist to treat Abstract Expressionism as a movement rather than a collection of unrelated painters. Her gallery was part exhibition space, part salon, part funhouse. After closing the New York gallery, she moved to Venice and exhibited her collection at the 1948 Venice Biennale, effectively introducing Pollock and the American avant-garde to Europe.
Castelli opened his gallery in New York in 1957 at the age of 50. He gave first solo shows to Jasper Johns in 1958 and Robert Rauschenberg in 1959. He later represented Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin. Castelli's innovation was to treat his artists as long-term investments. He did not push for quick sales. He placed works in museums at low prices to build institutional credibility, knowing that museum validation would raise the market value of everything else. He also pioneered the practice of paying artists a monthly stipend regardless of sales, a model that few galleries could afford but that gave artists the freedom to work.
Sonnabend was Castelli's first wife and business partner before opening her own gallery in Paris in 1962. She was the first dealer to show American Pop Art in Europe and the first to represent European artists like Mario Merz and Jannis Kounellis in the United States. Sonnabend built a bridge between the American and European art worlds that defined the international contemporary art market for decades.
Greenan represents a newer model. He opened his gallery in 2011 in Chelsea, focusing on historically significant but overlooked postwar artists like Howardena Pindell, Al Loving, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. "I kept finding these historically significant artists who were hiding in plain sight," he told Observer in 2026. The gallerist's job has expanded and contracted simultaneously. In the 1950s and 1960s, a gallerist ran one space, organized a handful of shows per year, and knew every collector personally. Today, major galleries like David Zwirner, Hauser and Wirth, and Gagosian operate multiple locations across continents, employ hundreds of staff, and participate in dozens of art fairs annually. The gallerist at the top of such an organization is closer to a CEO than to Leo Castelli sitting in his back room with Jasper Johns.
At the same time, independent galleries have proliferated. Ricardo Gonzalez Ramos founded Galeria RGR in Mexico City in 2018, building a program that pairs historical Latin American modernists like Jesus-Rafael Soto with contemporary voices like Felipe Pantone. He told Observer in 2026: "Since opening in CDMX, I have witnessed a remarkable evolution. The art fair circuit has transformed the gallerist's calendar. Fairs like Art Basel, Frieze, and Zona Maco now account for a significant portion of gallery revenue. Kevin Troyano Cuturi, who founded Cuturi Gallery in Singapore in 2019 and opened a Paris outpost under the arcades of the Palais-Royal, described the contemporary gallerist's mission: "Galleries are not simply retail spaces. The gallerist operates within a network of art world roles. The patronage system preceded the commercial gallery, with monarchs and aristocrats directly funding artists. The atelier was the artist's studio, where the gallerist would visit to select works. The avant-garde depended on gallerists like Guggenheim and Castelli to find audiences for work that the academic establishment rejected. The best way to understand what a gallerist does is to visit galleries. Most commercial galleries are free to enter and welcome walk-ins. In New York, the Chelsea gallery district and the Lower East Side have the highest concentration. In London, Mayfair and Cork Street have been gallery hubs since the 1950s. In Paris, the Marais and the Palais-Royal arcades are current centers. In Mexico City, San Miguel Chapultepec has become a gallery neighborhood in the last decade.
