Michelangelo drew the male nude with a piece of black shale he had cut from a rock and sharpened to a point. The chalk deposited a dense, warm black line on the paper, softer than pen ink and more controllable than charcoal. He could hatch, blend, and shade with it, building three-dimensional form on a flat sheet. Sixteenth-century artists called this material "black chalk," and it was one of three natural minerals they used for drawing. The other two were red chalk, an iron oxide stone, and white chalk, a form of calcite. Together, these three chalks formed the basis of European drawing for 300 years.
Chalk, in the context of art, refers to naturally occurring minerals that are soft enough to leave a mark on paper when rubbed across it. The three traditional drawing chalks are black chalk (a carbon-bearing shale or schist), red chalk (an iron oxide stone, also called sanguine), and white chalk (calcite or steatite). These are not the same as classroom chalk, which is made of calcium sulfate. Natural drawing chalks are mined from the earth, cut into sticks, and used directly on paper or on toned grounds. What Is Chalk and How Does It Work?
Natural drawing chalks are mineral stones that deposit pigment through direct contact with a surface. Unlike charcoal, which is burnt organic matter, chalk is a mineral that occurs naturally in the earth. It is soft enough to be cut with a knife, sawed into sticks, and sharpened to a point. When drawn across paper, the friction breaks off microscopic particles of mineral that adhere to the paper fibers.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's guide to chalk describes the material: "Red, black, and white chalk are naturally occurring minerals mined from the earth. Easy to use, they require no special preparation or complicated tools, and are suited to making both preparatory and highly finished drawings. Soft and compact, these materials can be sawed into narrow sticks or broken into small pieces."
Chalk is inherently cohesive but powdery. It adheres to paper with little pressure and minimal crumbling. When the chalk is dense and hard, it can make narrow lines and precise images. When it is softer, it produces broad, painterly marks. Chalk can be used for simple hatched compositions or for broad, overlapping tonal areas. The powder can also be ground and mixed with water or gum arabic to create washes, extending the medium from dry drawing into liquid application.
The Three Traditional Chalks
Black Chalk
Black chalk is a carbon-bearing shale or schist, a metamorphic rock formed from sediments. It is not the same as charcoal, which is burnt wood. Black chalk produces varying shades of black, from soft gray to dense dark, depending on the hardness of the stone and the pressure applied. The Ars Pictoria guide to natural drawing chalks notes that black chalk was likely the first of the three to be used, gaining popularity among Renaissance artists who valued its homogenous texture and softness. It could be shaped into tools or ground into powder for artistic applications. Black chalk is capable of both line and tone, making it more versatile than charcoal for finished drawings.
Red Chalk (Sanguine)
Red chalk, also called sanguine (from the Latin for "blood"), is an iron oxide stone composed mainly of hematite, clay, silicates, and other minerals. It produces a range of warm red tones, from bright orange to deep reddish brown, depending on the mineral composition of the source quarry. Red chalk was highly regarded from the 15th through the 18th centuries for the quality of its color and its broad range of effects. Different trace elements account for the variety of related colors. Historically, artists purchased natural chalk in various hues from color merchants who sourced it from quarries across Europe. White Chalk
White chalk is made from calcite, a mineral form of calcium carbonate, or from steatite (soapstone). It occurs naturally as a type of limestone formed from the shells of marine organisms. White chalk is used primarily for highlights on toned or colored paper, a technique called "heightening." When applied to mid-tone paper, white chalk creates the lightest values in a drawing, complementing black or red chalk for the shadows. A 2012 study published in the Journal of the American Institute for Conservation examined the history, geology, and chemical composition of natural white chalks used in Old Master drawings, identifying two main types: steatite natural white chalk and calcite natural white chalk. History of Chalk Drawing
Chalk drawing emerged in the 15th century, though the use of natural minerals for marking surfaces is ancient. The Renaissance saw chalk adopted as a primary drawing medium, replacing metalpoint for many purposes. Metalpoint required a specially prepared surface and produced a narrow tonal range. Chalk could be used on ordinary paper and offered a wider range of tones. Cennino Cennini describes chalk in Il Libro dell'Arte (c. 1390s), referencing both red and black chalk as established drawing materials.
Leonardo da Vinci played a pivotal role in popularizing chalk drawing. The Ars Pictoria guide notes that while Leonardo was not the first artist to use chalks, he "extensively explored the possibilities of these new media in numerous drawings and played a pivotal role in spreading and popularizing chalk drawing medium on the Italian peninsula." Leonardo explored the full spectrum of chalk drawing: drawings in solely red or black chalk, the aux deux crayons technique (two chalks plus white highlights), and the aux trois crayons technique (all three chalks combined).
The trois crayons technique, using red, black, and white chalk on toned paper, was pioneered in the late Renaissance by artists from Northern Europe. Jean Fouquet's preparatory drawing for the portrait of Guillaume Jouvenel des Ursins (c. 1455) is believed to be the first use of the technique and the origin of the French pastel drawing tradition. The technique reached its peak in the 18th century with Watteau, Boucher, and Fragonard, who used it to create drawings of extraordinary coloristic sophistication.
By the 19th century, natural chalks had largely been replaced by manufactured alternatives. Mined supplies grew scarce, and fabricated sticks offered consistency of color and texture. Key Artists and Chalk Drawings
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
Leonardo's The Drapery of a Chest and Sleeve (c. 1504-1508, Royal Collection Trust) uses red chalk with touches of black and white chalk on orange-red prepared paper. Leonardo was known for using red chalk on red-toned paper, a technique that produced delicate tonal transitions reminiscent of silverpoint drawings. His anatomical studies, including the Study of Horse Legs (c. 1490, Royal Library, Windsor), demonstrate chalk's capacity for both precise observation and atmospheric softness.
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
Michelangelo used black chalk for his figure studies, particularly the male nude. Seated Young Male Nude and Two Arm Studies (c. 1510-1511, Albertina) shows black chalk used for both precise hatching and broad tonal modeling. Raphael (1483-1520)
Raphael used red chalk for figure studies throughout his career. A 2025 study published in npj Heritage Science used microscopy, multiband imaging, X-ray fluorescence mapping, and Raman spectroscopy to analyze six Renaissance drawings by Raphael, Leonardo, and Perugino. Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)
Rubens used the trois crayons technique for portrait drawings, combining red, black, and white chalk on toned paper. His drawing of his wife Helena Fourment (c. 1630) uses sanguine for the flesh tones, black chalk for the shadows, and white chalk for the highlights, creating a portrait that bridges drawing and painting.
Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721)
Watteau made hundreds of sanguine and trois crayons drawings, exploiting the full tonal range available from the three chalks. His drawings were partially published after his death as Figures de differents caracteres (c. 1726-1728), testifying to the elevated status of drawing in the 18th century. Watteau's mastery of red chalk, used in conjunction with black and white, represents the peak of the trois crayons technique.
Techniques for Chalk Drawing
Chalk is applied through hatching (parallel lines for tone), cross-hatching (overlapping line sets for darker values), stumping (smudging with a rolled paper stump or finger to produce diffuse tonal areas), and heightening (adding white chalk for highlights on toned paper). Chalk can also be ground and mixed with water or gum arabic to create washes, extending the medium into liquid application.
The trois crayons technique combines red, black, and white chalk on toned or colored paper. Red chalk handles the warm flesh tones and mid-tones. Black chalk handles the deepest shadows. White chalk handles the highlights. The toned paper serves as the middle value, so the artist only needs to add the lights and darks. This technique produces drawings with a full tonal range and a coloristic richness that approaches painting.
Chalk drawings require fixative to prevent smudging. Red and white chalks are particularly fragile. The Ars Pictoria guide notes that 16th-century artists began contemplating the preservation of their chalk drawings, using traditional fixatives comprising natural resins like dammar to safeguard drawings executed with powdery media. Without fixative, chalk particles can be dislodged by touch or vibration.
Chalk is the natural ancestor of several manufactured drawing materials. Soft pastels are fabricated from the same pigments (iron oxide for red, carbon for black, calcium carbonate for white) but with controlled binder ratios.
