New Launches in 2026: Art Basel Qatar and Frieze Abu Dhabi
Art Basel Qatar (February 5-7, 2026, Doha): "In May 2025, Art Basel announced that it would launch a brand-new fair in Doha." 87 exhibitors from 31 countries. Unique features: artistic director is Wael Shawky (an artist, not a curator or market figure), "every booth will focus on a single artist. Each booth's subject was announced ahead of the fair." Venues: M7, Barahat Msherieb, Doha Design District.
Frieze Abu Dhabi (November 2026, Manarat Al Saadiyat): "In October 2025, Frieze announced that it would take over the homegrown Abu Dhabi Art fair." "Because that fair launched in 2007, Frieze is coming into the region with a certain amount of groundwork already laid." Details still under wraps. The 2025 edition of Abu Dhabi Art ran November 19-23 with 140+ exhibitors. The Gulf rivalry: "Art Dubai might maintain its status as the largest art fair in the Middle East this year, but it will face serious competition from Art Basel Qatar (in February) and Frieze Abu Dhabi (in November)." How to Attend: Tickets, Preview Days, and VIP Access
Tickets: "One-day ticket prices typically cost less than $100, but can increase to hundreds or thousands of dollars, where each higher price tier provides additional benefits, such as: early access to exhibit halls, VIP rooms, early purchasing; private tours; exclusive events and banquets" (Art Basel, Wikipedia). Most fairs offer day tickets online and at the door. Preview days (usually Wednesday and Thursday before general admission) are for VIPs, press, and invited guests. This is when the best art sells. "Dealers typically save their best, and priciest, works" for preview days. If you are not VIP, general admission days still offer plenty to see, but the best pieces may already be sold.
VIP access: VIP cards are issued by galleries and fair organizers. If you are not on a gallery's list, you can sometimes get VIP access through museum memberships, art advisor relationships, or corporate partnerships. VIP access includes early entry, VIP lounges, and exclusive events. The budget: a day at an art fair costs $50 to $100 for a ticket, plus travel, food, and lodging if the fair is in another city. Budget $200 to $500 for a day at a local fair, $1,000 to $3,000 for a weekend at a destination fair like Art Basel or Frieze. How to Make the Most of an Art Fair Visit
Before: check the exhibitor list online. Identify 5 to 10 galleries or artists you want to see. Plan a route. Art fairs are overwhelming. 250 galleries in one hall is too much to see without a plan. During: walk the fair once without buying. Get the lay of the land. Then go back to the booths that caught your eye. Take photos (if allowed) and notes. You will not remember which booth had which piece after 250 galleries.
Talking to dealers: gallery dealers at fairs are there to sell, but they are also there to talk. Ask questions: "Tell me about this artist." "What is the price range?" "Is this artist in any museum collections?" Dealers appreciate serious interest, even if you are not buying. Buying: if you see something you want, do not wait. "The best pieces may already be sold" by general admission, and if a piece is available, it may sell while you are thinking about it. Ask the dealer to hold it for 24 hours if you need time to decide. After: follow up with galleries whose work interested you. Sign up for their mailing lists. Visit their gallery spaces.
