Thomas Bewick's A History of British Birds (1797) changed what people thought a printed image could do. The illustrations showed birds with feather texture, eye highlights, and habitat detail that seemed impossible from a carved block of wood. The secret was not the design alone but the material: Bewick carved into the end grain of boxwood, not the side grain used for ordinary woodcuts. This gave him a surface hard enough and fine enough to hold lines thinner than a human hair, printed in editions of thousands without wearing down.
Wood engraving is a relief printmaking technique in which an image is carved into the end-grain surface of a dense hardwood block, typically boxwood. The end-grain cut exposes the tree's growth rings, creating a surface far harder and more uniform than the side grain used in conventional woodcut. The artist uses engraving tools, burins and gravers of the type used on metal plates, rather than the knives and gouges of woodcut. The result is a print of extraordinary fineness and tonal range, capable of reproducing the detail of a pen drawing. Wood engraving dominated book and periodical illustration throughout the 19th century until photographic reproduction replaced it in the 1880s.

Wood engraving is a relief process. The artist carves away the areas that should appear white in the print, leaving the design raised. The block is inked with a brayer, paper is placed on top, and pressure is applied, either by hand or by a printing press. The ink transfers from the raised surface to the paper.
The block is made from boxwood (Buxus sempervirens), cut across the trunk rather than along it. Boxwood is extremely dense and fine-grained, which allows the engraver to cut very thin lines that will survive thousands of impressions. The limitation is size: boxwood trees do not grow thick, so blocks are rarely larger than 6 inches (15 cm) across, typically 3 to 4 inches (9 to 10 cm). For larger illustrations, multiple blocks were bolted together.
The tools are the same as those used in copper engraving: a burin (also called a graver), which is a steel rod with a V-shaped cutting tip, plus various tint tools and spitstickers for different line widths. The block rests on a leather sandbag that allows the engraver to rotate it freely while cutting. The engraver works with the right hand holding the burin and the left hand turning the block.
Bewick's innovation was the white-line method. Instead of cutting black lines into a white field, as a copper engraver would, he cut white lines into a field that would print black. Every incision he made became a white mark in the print. This approach allowed him to build tonal gradations by varying the density and thickness of white lines, creating effects that resembled wash drawings rather than linear engravings. End-grain boxwood was used for small ornamental cuts in books from the late 17th century. The Oxford University Press was using boxwood engraved on the end grain for decorative initials by that time. But these were small, functional elements, not illustrations. The potential of the medium for full images had not been explored.
Bewick, working in Newcastle upon Tyne, developed wood engraving into an art form. His A History of British Birds (Volume I, 1797; Volume II, 1804) and A History of Quadrupeds (1790) were the first books to use wood-engraved illustrations as a primary feature rather than decoration. Bewick engraved many of the blocks himself, drawing directly on the block or transferring designs from paper. His technique of lowering the surface in certain areas to soften the impression and create atmospheric effects was entirely original.
Bewick's method had a practical advantage that transformed publishing: because wood engravings are relief prints, they could be set into the same frame as letterpress type and printed simultaneously. Intaglio illustrations, like copper engravings, required a separate press and a separate printing run, making illustrated books expensive. Wood engraving made high-quality illustration affordable, and by the mid-19th century it had become the dominant method for illustrating books, magazines, and newspapers.
After Bewick, wood engraving became an industry. In 1817, only fourteen wood engravers were listed in London directories. By 1852, there were forty-seven. By 1872, 128 engravers worked in London alone. The practice divided into two roles: the artist drew the design on the block, and the engraver cut it. This division of labor allowed mass production but often separated the creative act from the technical one.
Gustave Doré in France produced enormous quantities of drawings for wood-engraved illustration, including editions of the Bible, Dante's Divine Comedy, and Cervantes's Don Quixote. Doré drew his designs on the blocks, and teams of engravers cut them. The results were spectacular in scale and drama, though some critics felt the engravers' interpretation of Doré's drawings added a layer of mediation between artist and print.
In the United States, Timothy Cole developed a stipple technique, cutting short white lines and dots to create atmospheric effects that imitated the tonal range of paintings. His engravings of Old Master paintings for The Century Magazine in the 1880s were widely admired. Photographic halftone reproduction, introduced in the 1880s, could reproduce photographs and tonal drawings directly, eliminating the need for engravers to translate images into lines. Wood engraving collapsed as a commercial industry within two decades. The technique survived among fine art printmakers and private presses. William Morris's Kelmscott Press used wood engravings in the 1890s, and the Society of Wood Engravers, founded in 1920 by Lucien Pissarro, Robert Gibbings, and others, promoted the medium as an art form.
Bewick is the founder of wood engraving as an art. His History of British Birds combined scientific observation with artistic sensitivity. The tail-pieces, small vignettes at the ends of sections, show rural life, ruined cottages, and atmospheric landscapes with a precision and poetry that make them some of the most beloved images in English printmaking. Bewick cut most of his own blocks, maintaining a direct connection between hand and image that the later industrial engravers lost.
Blake engraved his own designs on wood, though only a few examples survive. His approach was idiosyncratic and isolated from the mainstream of wood engraving, but his blocks show the same white-line principle that Bewick used, applied to visionary and symbolic imagery rather than natural history.
Doré's wood-engraved illustrations defined the visual imagination of 19th-century literature. His illustrations for Dante's Inferno (1861) show plunging abysses, writhing bodies, and shafts of divine light, all rendered through the engraver's network of white lines. The scale of Doré's projects required teams of engravers, and the blocks were often large assemblies of multiple boxwood sections.
Gibbings was a key figure in the 20th-century revival of wood engraving. He co-founded the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920 and ran the Golden Cockerel Press, which produced fine editions with wood-engraved illustrations by artists including Eric Gill and John Nash. Gibbings engraved his own blocks with a directness and simplicity that rejected the ornate detail of Victorian engraving in favor of bold, clean lines.
Ravilious brought a modern sensibility to wood engraving. His illustrations for books including The Country Life and his engravings of the South Downs show a geometric clarity and a love of pattern that connect wood engraving to 20th-century design. Ravilious demonstrated that the medium was not limited to Victorian naturalism but could serve a modern aesthetic.
Wood engraving and woodcut are both relief printing techniques, but they differ in material, tools, and visual quality. Woodcut uses the side grain of a plank, carved with knives and gouges. Wood engraving uses the end grain of a block, carved with burins. The end grain is harder and more uniform, allowing finer lines and more detail. Woodcut blocks wear down faster under printing pressure; wood engraving blocks can survive thousands of impressions. Visually, woodcuts tend toward bold, graphic lines, while wood engravings can achieve tonal gradations that resemble pen drawings or wash illustrations.
Both are forms of relief printing, alongside linocut. For contrast, etching and engraving are intaglio processes that print from incised lines below the surface, producing a different visual character.
Bewick's original blocks and prints are held at the Bewick Society in Newcastle and the British Museum in London. The Victoria and Albert Museum has a large collection of 19th-century wood engravings, including blocks by Doré's engravers and works by the Society of Wood Engravers. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford holds Eric Ravilious engravings.
When you look at a wood engraving in person, look for the white lines. Unlike a copper engraving, where the lines are black on white, a wood engraving builds its image from white marks cut into a dark field.
