In 1932, a Mexican painter stood on scaffolding in the inner courtyard of the Detroit Institute of Arts and painted the walls. He covered 27 panels with images of factory workers, machinery, and industrial production. The murals show workers at the Ford River Rouge plant, surrounded by blast furnaces, stamping presses, and conveyor belts. The figures are monumental, their bodies aligned with the machines, their faces focused and serious. The artist was Diego Rivera. Mexican Muralism was born from the Mexican Revolution, which lasted from 1910 to 1920 and overthrew the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz. The revolution was fought by peasants, workers, and indigenous people who had been excluded from the benefits of Mexico's modernization under Diaz. When the fighting ended, the new government faced the challenge of building a national identity that included the indigenous and working-class populations that had fought the revolution.
Vasconcelos, appointed Minister of Public Education in 1921, saw art as a tool for education and nation-building. Mexico's population was largely illiterate, and Vasconcelos believed that visual art on public walls could teach history, values, and civic pride more effectively than books. Rivera was the most famous and most prolific of the Mexican muralists. His Detroit Industry Murals (1932-1933, Detroit Institute of Arts) are his masterpiece outside Mexico: 27 panels covering the walls of an inner courtyard, depicting the Ford River Rouge plant and its workers. In Mexico, his History of Mexico (1929-1935, National Palace, Mexico City) covers the stairwell and walls of the main courtyard with a sweeping narrative from pre-Columbian civilization through the conquest to the revolution. Rivera's Man at the Crossroads (1933, Rockefeller Center, New York) was destroyed because it included a portrait of Lenin. Rivera re-painted it at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City in 1934, titling it Man, Controller of the Universe. Orozco was the most introspective and pessimistic of the three. His murals are darker, more violent, and more skeptical of revolutionary ideology than Rivera's.
