Look at Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) for three seconds and then close your eyes. You will see the face. Not the turban, not the dark background, not the yellow dress. The face. Vermeer made sure of it. He placed the girl's head at the visual center of the composition, lit it against a dark background, painted it with the highest level of detail and the most saturated colors, and framed it with the blue and yellow turban that directs the eye inward. Every decision in the painting serves one purpose: to make you look at the face. That is emphasis, and it is the mechanism by which an artist controls where you look first.
Emphasis is the creation of a focal point in a composition: an area that draws the viewer's attention more strongly than any other. A focal point is the specific spot where emphasis is concentrated. Most paintings have one dominant focal point and several secondary ones. The artist creates emphasis through contrast, placement, isolation, scale, or direction, and the result is a visual hierarchy that tells the viewer what matters most in the painting.

What Is Emphasis and Why Does It Matter?
Without emphasis, a painting presents all its information at once and at the same level of importance. The eye has nowhere to land and nowhere to return. The result is visual confusion. The viewer scans the surface, finds nothing to focus on, and moves on. Emphasis solves this problem by creating a hierarchy of attention. The focal point is the primary anchor. Secondary focal points provide additional points of interest. The composition guides the eye from the main focal point to the secondary ones and back again.
The human visual system is designed for selective attention. We cannot process everything in our field of vision simultaneously. The brain prioritizes certain types of information: faces, high-contrast areas, bright colors, isolated objects, and things that move. Artists exploit these perceptual priorities to create emphasis. A painting that uses one or more of these attention-grabbing strategies will direct the viewer's gaze predictably.
A 2025 study published in Frontiers in Psychology used eye-tracking with 48 participants viewing Japanese woodblock landscape prints and found that artworks with compositional structures aligned with expert-estimated scanpaths enabled viewers to better interpret the artist's intention. The researchers defined this as RAIC: Reading an Artist's Intention from the Composition. A 2024 study published in i-Perception introduced a "pictorial technique" where participants marked the most visually impactful areas of paintings. The researchers found that participants marked approximately 17% of a painting's surface as impactful, and that traditional figural paintings concentrated attention on central narrative elements. How Artists Create Emphasis
Contrast
Contrast is the most common tool for creating emphasis. An element that differs from its surroundings in value, color, texture, or shape will pull the eye. Caravaggio built his entire career on value contrast as emphasis. In The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599-1600, Contarelli Chapel, Rome), the shaft of light hitting Matthew is the highest-contrast area in the painting, and it is where your eye goes first. Placement
Where an element sits in the composition affects how much attention it commands. Elements near the center of the picture carry more emphasis than elements near the edges. Elements placed at the intersection of the rule-of-thirds lines also draw attention. Leonardo's Last Supper (1495-1498, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan) places Christ at the exact center of the composition, with the vanishing point of the perspective directly behind his head. The placement alone would create emphasis even without the lighting and compositional strategies that reinforce it.
Isolation
An element surrounded by empty space commands more attention than the same element in a crowded area. The emptiness acts as a frame. Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (c. 1818, Hamburger Kunsthalle) places a single figure at the top of a rock, isolated against the sky and fog. The figure is small, but the isolation makes it the focal point. The vast landscape around it exists to emphasize the solitary figure.
Scale
Making one element larger than the others creates emphasis through dominance. In medieval and Byzantine art, the most important figure was always the largest, regardless of spatial position. This hierarchical scaling placed Christ or the Virgin Mary at the top of the visual hierarchy through sheer size. Giotto's Ognissanti Madonna (c. 1310, Uffizi) shows the Virgin at nearly twice the size of the surrounding angels and saints. The scale tells the viewer who matters most.
Direction
Lines, gestures, and gazes within the painting can point toward the focal point. In Leonardo's Last Supper, the perspective lines of the ceiling and walls converge behind Christ's head. The gestures of the apostles, though varied, create directional energy that radiates outward from and returns to the central figure. In Renaissance paintings of the Annunciation, the angel's gesture and the direction of the light both point toward the Virgin, creating emphasis through directional cues.
A 2024 eye-tracking study published in the Journal of Eye Movement Research found that leading lines significantly influenced viewer attention, particularly when prominent subject elements were present. Leading lines with subjects resulted in longer fixation durations and greater engagement. The study confirms that directional cues are an effective mechanism for creating emphasis. Historical Context: How Emphasis Evolved
In medieval art, emphasis was achieved primarily through hierarchical scaling and placement. The most important figure was the largest and the most central. This system was simple and effective: viewers knew immediately who to look at. The Renaissance introduced more sophisticated approaches. Linear perspective allowed artists to create emphasis through spatial positioning: the focal point could be placed at the vanishing point, where all perspective lines converged. Leonardo's Last Supper is the classic example.
The Baroque period made emphasis dramatic. Caravaggio used light as emphasis: a shaft of illumination in an otherwise dark painting made the focal point unmistakable. Bernini used diagonal compositions that thrust the focal point toward the viewer. In The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (1647-1652, Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome), the saint's body is lit by hidden windows, isolated in a dark chapel, and surrounded by marble rays of divine light. The emphasis is theatrical and overwhelming.
The 19th century saw emphasis become more subtle and psychological. Vermeer had already demonstrated this in the 17th century: his focal points are created through quiet accumulation of contrast, detail, and color rather than dramatic lighting. Degas and the Impressionists used cropping and off-center placement to create emphasis that felt natural rather than staged. Photography reinforced this approach. A photograph crops the world, and whatever is in the center of the frame becomes the focal point by default.
The 20th century challenged the concept of emphasis itself. Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollock eliminated the single focal point in favor of all-over composition. Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) (1950, Metropolitan Museum of Art) has no focal point. Every area of the canvas has equal weight and equal attention. Key Artists and Their Use of Emphasis
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
Leonardo created emphasis through the convergence of multiple techniques. In The Last Supper (1495-1498), Christ sits at the center, at the vanishing point of the perspective, isolated by a window that frames his head, and surrounded by apostles whose gestures create directional energy pointing back to him. No other painting in Western art combines so many emphasis strategies in a single composition.
Caravaggio (1571-1610)
Caravaggio's emphasis is created by light. In The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599-1600), the single shaft of light that strikes Matthew is the only bright area in an otherwise dark painting. The emphasis is so strong that the painting reads instantly: you know where to look before you know what the subject is. Caravaggio proved that a single contrast can carry the entire weight of compositional emphasis.
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)
Vermeer's emphasis is layered and precise. In The Milkmaid (c. 1657-1658, Rijksmuseum), the figure is the focal point, created through value contrast against the bright wall, saturation contrast in the blue apron and yellow bodice, and placement at the center of the composition. But Vermeer also created a secondary focal point: the stream of milk pouring from the jug. The milk is the brightest continuous white in the painting, and it draws the eye after the figure. The result is a visual hierarchy: figure first, milk second, table and bread third.
Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840)
Friedrich created emphasis through isolation and scale. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (c. 1818) places a single small figure at the top of a composition dominated by landscape. The figure is the focal point not because it is large or brightly colored, but because it is the only human element in a vast natural scene. The isolation gives it more weight than any amount of contrast could.
Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
Degas created emphasis through unusual placement and cropping. In The Ballet Class (1871-1874, Musee d'Orsay), the ballet master Jules Perrot sits off-center, and the composition is cropped so that dancers are cut off at the edges. The emphasis falls on Perrot not because he is centrally placed but because he is the most still figure in a room full of movement. Degas understood that stillness can create emphasis as effectively as contrast.
How to Identify the Focal Point in a Painting
When you stand in front of a painting, try this exercise. Close your eyes for three seconds, then open them and notice where your eye lands first. That is the primary focal point. Now watch where your eye goes next. That is the secondary focal point. The path your eye takes between focal points is the compositional structure the artist designed for you.
If you cannot identify a focal point, the artist may have deliberately eliminated emphasis. All-over compositions like Pollock's drip paintings or some of Monet's late Water Lilies have no single focal point. The absence of emphasis is itself a compositional decision, and it produces a different kind of viewing experience: instead of moving from point to point, the eye drifts across the entire surface.
A 2025 study published in Applied Sciences found that in abstract art, where semantic cues are absent, visual attention is guided by low- and mid-level perceptual factors including contrast, grouping, isolation, and symmetry. The researchers' saliency model, tested against eye-tracking data from 40 abstract paintings, showed that contrast and texture were the strongest predictors of where viewers looked.
