In 2013, the Morgan Library and Museum in New York acquired 5,783 black-and-white contact sheets from the estate of Peter Hujar, a photographer who died of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1987 at the age of 53. The sheets, stored in eight banker boxes, each encased in a plastic wallet and sorted vertically like documents in a filing cabinet, contained the complete record of Hujar's working life from 1954 to 1985. Two spiral-bound job books accompanied them, logging every shoot by number. Hujar left no written reflection on his work, no diaries, no statements. The contact sheets are his autobiography. In May 2026, the Morgan opened Hujar: Contact, the first major exhibition to treat the contact sheet not as a working tool but as an object worthy of close study in its own right.
A contact sheet is a photographic print made by placing strips of negative film directly in contact with a sheet of light-sensitive paper, exposing the sandwich to light, and developing it. The result is a grid of small, thumbnail-sized images showing every frame from a roll of film in the order they were shot. The contact sheet is the photographer's first look at what they captured. It is the editing tool that precedes the final print, the place where decisions are made about which frames to enlarge, which to discard, and which to set aside.

The process is simple. In a darkroom under safelight, a sheet of photographic paper is placed on a flat surface, emulsion side up. Strips of developed negative film are laid on top of the paper, emulsion side down, so that the emulsion layers are in direct contact. A sheet of glass is placed on top to press the film and paper together. Light is briefly shone through the negatives onto the paper. The paper is then developed in chemical solutions: developer, stop bath, fixer, and wash.
The result is a sheet of positive images, each the same size as the negative frame. A roll of 35mm film produces 36 frames, typically arranged in rows of six or seven on an 8x10 inch sheet. A roll of 120 medium-format film produces 12 square frames on a similar sheet. Each image is small enough that you need a loupe, a small magnifying glass designed for inspecting film, to evaluate sharpness and detail.
Photographers mark their selections on the contact sheet with a grease pencil, also called a chinagraph pencil or china marker, a waxy marker that writes on glossy surfaces and can be wiped off if the photographer changes their mind. A circle around a frame means "select." A crop mark indicates how the frame should be enlarged. A line through a frame means "reject." These marks are part of the editing process, and on archival contact sheets they have become evidence of the photographer's thinking.
Contact printing is the oldest photographic printing method. The first photographs were contact prints, made by placing a negative or an object directly on sensitized paper. When William Henry Fox Talbot invented the calotype in 1840, he made positive prints by contact printing paper negatives onto salted paper. Every calotype print was a contact print, the same size as the negative. The contact print was the standard printing method throughout the 19th century because enlargers were not yet practical.
The contact sheet as a specific tool emerged with the introduction of roll film. The Leica I, launched in 1925, used 35mm cine film repurposed for still photography, producing 36 exposures per roll. With dozens of frames per roll, photographers needed a way to review all of them at once. The contact sheet was the solution: a compact grid that showed every frame in sequence, allowing the photographer to compare, select, and plan enlargements.
The contact sheet was the backbone of photojournalism during the golden age of print media. Weekly picture magazines, most famously LIFE (1936-1972), built photo essays from rolls of film. Editors, researchers, and layout teams worked over contact sheets, trading notes, narrowing choices, and crafting narrative arcs. The contact sheet was where the story was assembled. A photographer might shoot 300 frames on assignment. The editor would review the contact sheets with a loupe, mark the selects, and send those frames to the darkroom for enlargement.
At Magnum Photos, founded in 1947 by Cartier-Bresson, Capa, Seymour, and Rodger, the contact sheet became part of the agency's culture. Magnum photographers were expected to submit contact sheets with their assignments, and the agency's editors would review them to select images for syndication. The Magnum contact sheets, with their layers of wax pencil marks from photographers and editors, are a visible record of the editing process. The Magnum Contact Sheets book, published in 2011, reproduced 139 contact sheets from the Magnum archive, revealing the frames before and after the iconic images.
In the digital age, the contact sheet has become an artifact. Scrolling through a Lightroom catalogue does not accumulate in the same physical way. You cannot annotate a digital grid with a grease pencil and hand it to a researcher 50 years later. The physical contact sheet, with its marks, its sequence, and its evidence of process, has become a subject of archival and museum interest.
The Morgan Library's Hujar: Contact exhibition, on view from May 22 to October 25, 2026, presents more than 110 contact sheets and 20 enlargements drawn from the museum's collection of Hujar's work. The exhibition shows the contact sheet as a working tool and as an object that reveals the photographer's process. Many sheets bear Hujar's editing marks in varying colors of oil pencil, a personal notation system for decisions about cropping, sequencing, and printing. As curator Joel Smith describes it, the contact sheet "traps the creative process of the artist between the exposure phase and the editing, thinking and printing." The sheets reveal Hujar's approach, pacing, and near-misses alongside the frames he chose. Hujar began filing contact sheets and assigning them job numbers at age 21, in 1954, and continued until his death in 1987, logging more than a thousand shoots in meticulous job books. He worked primarily with a medium-format twin-lens reflex camera that produced 12 square frames per roll, and a 35mm camera producing 24 or 36 rectangular frames. His subjects ranged across downtown New York life: Susan Sontag, Candy Darling, Iggy Pop, Marsha P. Johnson, David Wojnarowicz, John Waters. The contact sheets show the full sequence of each shoot, from posed studio portraits to the final frame of a subject at Hujar's kitchen table, smoking and talking. Cartier-Bresson's contact sheets reveal the process behind the decisive moment. His sheets show that he sometimes made multiple exposures of the same scene rather than relying on a single frame. The sheets for Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare show several frames of the flooded construction site, with the leaping man appearing in only one. The contact sheet demonstrates that the decisive moment was not always a single, isolated act of recognition. It was sometimes the result of patient observation and repeated attempts.
Arbus's contact sheets, held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, include frames marked with yellow wax pencil and handwritten notes. The sheets show her approach to portraiture: she would photograph a subject multiple times, varying the pose and the distance slightly, and the contact sheet reveals which frames she selected and which she rejected. The rejected frames are as revealing as the selected ones, showing the alternatives she considered and dismissed.
Frank's contact sheets for The Americans (1958), his landmark book of 83 photographs selected from over 28,000 frames, show the scale of his editing process. Frank drove across the United States in 1955-1956, shooting over 700 rolls of film. The contact sheets from those rolls show the raw material from which he selected the 83 images that became the book. The ratio of 28,000 frames to 83 final images is a demonstration of how ruthless the editing process must be.
The contact sheet has no direct equivalent in digital photography. The function persists: photographers still review grids of thumbnail images to select which frames to edit and which to discard. Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, and Photo Mechanic all offer grid-based culling and digital contact sheet generation. But the physical object, the sheet of paper with its grease pencil marks and its sequence of frames, does not exist in a digital workflow.
This loss is not just nostalgic. The physical contact sheet accumulates evidence. It shows the order in which frames were shot, which reveals the photographer's approach to the subject. It bears the marks of editing decisions, which reveal the photographer's thinking. It is a single object that can be stored, retrieved, and studied decades later. A digital catalogue can be searched and filtered, but it does not accumulate in the same way. As Joel Smith of the Morgan Library notes, "there is no comparable object in the regime of digital photographic practice."
The contact sheet is closely related to contact printing, the broader process of making prints with the negative directly touching the paper. It is a product of film photography, specifically roll film, and it is the editing tool used by photographers working with the decisive moment concept. When you look at a contact sheet, look at the frames the photographer rejected. The selected frame is usually obvious. The rejected frames tell you what the photographer was looking for and why the chosen frame was the one that worked. The contact sheet is the most honest record of how a photograph was made. It shows the approach, the misfires, the instincts, and the edits.
