On August 4, 2026, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles will open The Making of a Medieval Manuscript, an exhibition running through March 2027. It follows the manuscript-making process from beginning to end: parchment production, writing, illumination, and binding. Samples of the tools and materials used at each stage will accompany manuscripts from the Getty's collection. The exhibition includes Christian, Jewish, and Muslim works, demonstrating that manuscript illumination was a shared practice across the medieval Mediterranean world. One of the featured works is the Rothschild Pentateuch (1296), a richly illuminated Jewish manuscript whose displayed pages are decorated with gold and silver leaf alongside pigments including lead white, orange-toned lead red, organic pink, copper green, and azurite blue. Illuminated manuscripts are hand-written texts decorated with illustrations, ornamental borders, and, most distinctively, gold and silver leaf. The term "illumination" comes from the Latin "illuminare," meaning to light up, referring to the way gold leaf catches and reflects light. These manuscripts were produced throughout Europe and the Mediterranean from approximately the 5th to the 16th century, before the invention of printing made hand-copied books obsolete. They include Bibles, psalters, books of hours, gospels, choir books, missals, and legal texts, and they represent one of the highest artistic achievements of the medieval period.

The production of an illuminated manuscript was a multi-stage process involving multiple skilled workers. It began with parchment, made from animal skin, usually sheep, goat, or calf. Calfskin parchment, called vellum, was the highest quality and was used for the most luxurious manuscripts. The skin was soaked in lime, scraped with a curved knife to remove hair and flesh, stretched on a frame, and scraped again until thin and smooth. A single large manuscript could require the skins of dozens of animals.
After the parchment was prepared, it was cut to size and ruled with lines to guide the scribe. The scribe wrote the text using a quill pen, usually made from a goose feather, and ink made from oak galls, iron salts, and gum arabic. Spaces were left in the text for initials, illustrations, and decorative borders, which were added after the text was complete.
The illuminator then added the decoration. Gold leaf was applied by first laying down a substrate, typically gesso (a mixture of chalk, glue, and sugar or honey), then pressing thin sheets of gold onto the wet gesso and burnishing it with a smooth stone or tooth until it shone. Pigments were made from minerals, plants, and insects: ultramarine blue from lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan, red from cinnabar or kermes insects, green from malachite or copper resinate, white from lead white, and purple from the murex sea snail. These pigments were ground, mixed with a binder such as egg white or tempera, and applied with fine brushes.
The Getty's 2026 exhibition includes samples of these materials alongside the finished manuscripts, allowing visitors to see the raw ingredients that went into the finished pages. The exhibition also shows works that were left unfinished, where the planned illumination was never completed, revealing the underdrawing and the spaces reserved for decoration.
The earliest illuminated manuscripts date from late antiquity. The Vienna Genesis (early 6th century, Austrian National Library) is a fragment of the Book of Genesis written in Greek on purple-dyed vellum with silver ink, one of the earliest surviving illuminated biblical manuscripts. The Book of Kells (c. 800, Trinity College Dublin) is the most famous Insular manuscript, created by monks in Ireland or Scotland. Its pages combine intricate interlace patterns, animal forms, and human figures with a density and precision that has never been surpassed. The Chi Rho page, which begins the narrative of Christ's birth in the Gospel of Matthew, is a single page so densely decorated that the text is almost entirely absorbed into the ornament.
The Carolingian Renaissance, initiated by Charlemagne in the late 8th and early 9th centuries, revived the production of illuminated manuscripts across Europe. Charlemagne's court at Aachen attracted scholars and scribes who developed a standardized script (Carolingian minuscule) and commissioned lavish gospel books. The Ebbo Gospels (c. 816-835, Bibliotheque municipale, Epernay) introduced a new style of figure drawing with energetic, expressive lines that replaced the classical calm of earlier manuscripts.
The Romanesque period (c. 1000-1150) saw the production of large Bibles and psalters with decorated initials and narrative scenes. The St. Albans Psalter (c. 1120-1130, owned by the church of St. Godehard in Hildesheim) is one of the finest English Romanesque manuscripts, with expressive figure drawings influenced by Byzantine art.
The Gothic period (c. 1150-1400) saw the rise of the book of hours, a private devotional book used by lay people. The book of hours became the most common type of illuminated manuscript in the late medieval period, and its production was a major industry in Paris, Bruges, and Utrecht. The Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry (c. 1412-1416, Musee Conde, Chantilly), illuminated by the Limbourg brothers, is the most famous book of hours and one of the most celebrated illuminated manuscripts ever made. Its calendar pages depict aristocratic life and peasant labor in detailed landscapes that established a new standard for naturalistic representation in manuscript painting.
The 15th century was the peak of manuscript illumination in terms of quantity and technical refinement. The invention of printing by Gutenberg around 1450 did not immediately end manuscript production. Illuminated manuscripts continued to be commissioned by wealthy patrons for decades, and some early printed books were hand-illuminated with gold leaf and painted initials to make them look like manuscripts. By the early 16th century, printed books had largely replaced manuscripts for most purposes, and manuscript illumination became a specialized craft rather than a major industry.
The Book of Kells is the most famous illuminated manuscript in the world. Created by monks in Ireland or Scotland around the year 800, it contains the four Gospels in Latin, decorated with full-page illustrations, ornamental initials, and interlace patterns of extraordinary complexity. The Chi Rho page is the most reproduced image from any medieval manuscript. The Book of Kells is in the collection of Trinity College Dublin, where it is permanently displayed.
Commissioned by Jean, Duc de Berry, and illuminated by the Limbourg brothers (Herman, Jean, and Paul), the Tres Riches Heures is the most celebrated book of hours. Its calendar pages show the months of the year through scenes of aristocratic leisure and peasant labor, set in detailed landscapes that include specific castles owned by the Duke. The Limbourg brothers died in 1416, possibly of the plague, leaving the manuscript unfinished. It is in the Musee Conde in Chantilly, France.
The Rothschild Pentateuch is a richly illuminated Jewish manuscript containing the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. It was acquired by the Getty Museum in 2018 with the support of Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder. Its pages are decorated with gold and silver leaf and a range of pigments including azurite blue and copper green. The manuscript demonstrates the variety of materials available to medieval illuminators and the technical expertise required to combine writing, decoration, and precious metals on a single page. It is featured in the Getty's 2026 exhibition.
Del Chierico was a Florentine illuminator who worked for patrons including the Medici family. His initials and narrative scenes are characterized by delicate figure drawing, architectural settings, and rich color. His Initial I: God the Father Blessing (early 1460s, Getty Museum) shows God the Father within an initial letter I, surrounded by gold leaf and decorated with tempera on parchment. Del Chierico's work represents the high point of Florentine Renaissance illumination, where manuscript painting reached a level of refinement comparable to panel painting.
The Getty Museum's The Making of a Medieval Manuscript exhibition (August 2026 to March 2027) is the most significant museum exhibition on manuscript production in 2026. It examines manuscript production across Europe and the Mediterranean from approximately 500 to 1500, following the process from parchment to binding.
