Walk into the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy in Conques, France, and the first thing you notice is the weight. The walls are thick, the windows are small, and the barrel vault overhead presses down with a physical force you can almost feel. The interior is dark. Light filters through narrow openings and falls on stone that has been there for nearly 1,000 years. This is what Romanesque architecture feels like from the inside: solid, massive, and built to last until Judgment Day, which is exactly what the carved tympanum over the west door threatens.
Romanesque art is the visual culture of Western Europe from approximately 1000 to 1150 CE. It includes architecture, sculpture, painting, manuscript illumination, metalwork, and stained glass. The term was coined by 19th-century art historians who saw the style's rounded arches and barrel vaults as descended from Roman architecture. Romanesque buildings were fortress-like, with thick walls, small windows, and massive piers. The sculpture was expressive and sometimes violent, carved into the stone of church portals and capitals. The illuminated manuscripts produced in monastic scriptoria were among the most ambitious painting of the period.

Romanesque art was driven by the monastic movement. In the 11th century, Europe experienced relative political stability and economic growth. Monasteries expanded, pilgrimage routes developed, and the Church commissioned building programs on a scale not seen since the fall of Rome. The pilgrimage roads leading to Santiago de Compostela in Spain passed through dozens of Romanesque churches, each competing for pilgrims and their donations with increasingly ambitious architecture and sculpture.
The style was international. Romanesque churches from France to Italy to England share the same basic features: rounded arches, barrel vaults, thick walls, and carved portals. Regional variations existed, but the common vocabulary was remarkably consistent across a continent that had no centralized artistic authority.
The defining architectural innovation of the Romanesque period was the replacement of timber roofs with stone vaults. Timber roofs were a fire hazard and limited the height and span of churches. Stone barrel vaults, semi-circular in cross-section, allowed for larger and more permanent buildings. But barrel vaults exerted enormous outward thrust on the walls, which had to be thickened and buttressed to contain it. This is why Romanesque churches have massive walls and few windows. The walls are structural. They hold up the vault.
The pilgrimage church was the characteristic building type. Churches on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, including Sainte-Foy at Conques (c. 1050-1130), Saint-Martial at Limoges, Saint-Sernin at Toulouse (c. 1080-1120), and Santiago de Compostela itself (begun 1075), followed a similar plan: a long nave with side aisles, an ambulatory around the apse with radiating chapels, and galleries above the aisles. The ambulatory allowed pilgrims to circulate past the relics without disturbing the mass in the nave.
Sainte-Foy is a quintessential Romanesque pilgrimage church. The west facade has two towers framing a rounded portal. The tympanum above the door shows the Last Judgment: Christ in majesty at the center, angels blowing trumpets, the saved to his right and the damned to his left. The carving is expressive and direct. The damned are shown being dragged into hell by demons with exaggerated, grotesque features. This was not subtle art. It was designed to terrify pilgrims into righteousness. The church also holds the gold reliquary of Saint Foy, a medieval statue made of gold and gemstones over a wooden core, containing the skull of the martyred girl.
The tympanum at Moissac shows Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four evangelists, rendered as a lion, an ox, an eagle, and a man. The carving is more fluid and animated than at Conques. The figures twist and turn. The drapery folds are deep and rhythmic. The trumeau (center pillar) of the portal is carved with a figure of the Prophet Jeremiah, whose body is elongated and crossed in a pose that art historians have compared to dancing. The figure's robes fall in flat, decorative patterns that bear, as the Wikipedia overview of Romanesque art notes, "little resemblance to the weight and fall of actual cloth." The tympanum at Autun is signed by its sculptor, Giselbertus, which is rare for the period. It shows the Last Judgment with elongated, weightless figures. The angel weighing souls is one of the most reproduced images from Romanesque sculpture. The figures at Autun are more ethereal than at Moissac or Conques. They float rather than stand. The carving style is shallower and more linear, creating a surface that catches light differently from the deeper carving at Moissac.
This illuminated psalter was produced at St. Albans Abbey in England and is one of the finest Romanesque manuscripts. It contains over 40 full-page illustrations with elongated, monumental figures clothed in heavy drapery. The colors are strong and somber, very different from the pale tones of earlier English manuscripts. The figures show the influence of Byzantine models, which reached England through continental monastic connections. The St. Albans Psalter had a decisive influence on the development of English Romanesque painting.
Produced at Bury St. Edmunds Abbey in England, the Bury Bible is one of the largest and most lavishly decorated Romanesque manuscripts. Its initial letters contain figures that twist and contort to fit the available space, a characteristic feature of Romanesque manuscript illumination. The colors are intense: deep blues, reds, and greens against gold leaf backgrounds.
Romanesque sculpture was primarily architectural. Free-standing statues were rare. Instead, sculptors carved relief panels into tympanums, capitals, doorposts, and lintels. The imagery was drawn from Byzantine iconographic models: Christ in Majesty, the Last Judgment, the four evangelists. The figures were distorted and stylized, with elongated bodies, exaggerated gestures, and drapery that fell in geometric patterns rather than natural folds.
Manuscript illumination was a monastic industry. Monks copied biblical texts, classical philosophers, and Islamic mathematical treatises by hand, adding illustrations in intense colors. Figures were often contorted to fit the available space on the page. The illustrators used parchment made from sheep, goat, or calf skin, writing the text before adding images. The most lavishly decorated manuscripts were bibles and psalters, which offered the most scope for narrative illustration.
In architecture, look for rounded arches, barrel vaults, thick walls, and small windows. If the church looks like a fortress, it is probably Romanesque. The pointed arch, which distinguishes Gothic architecture, does not appear in Romanesque work.
In sculpture, look for figures carved in high relief on church portals and capitals. The figures are elongated and expressive, with exaggerated gestures and schematic drapery. The imagery is almost always religious: Christ, the Last Judgment, saints, evangelists.
In manuscripts, look for figures that twist and contort to fit their frames. The initials are often "historiated," meaning they contain narrative scenes. The colors are strong and the gold leaf is applied in flat sheets, not burnished to a high shine as in later Gothic work.
The pilgrimage churches of France are the best places to experience Romanesque architecture: Sainte-Foy at Conques, Saint-Sernin at Toulouse, Saint-Pierre at Moissac, and Autun Cathedral. The Cloisters in New York, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, holds Romanesque sculpture and architectural elements from European churches. Durham Cathedral in England (begun 1093) is one of the finest Romanesque buildings in Britain, with its massive piers and ribbed vaults. The British Library holds the St. Albans Psalter and other Romanesque manuscripts.
