Joseph Nicephore Niepce placed an engraving made transparent with wax onto a metal plate coated with bitumen of Judea and set it in the sun. After four to six hours of exposure, he washed the plate with lavender oil. The bitumen that had been exposed to light had hardened and remained. The bitumen under the dark lines of the engraving had not hardened and dissolved away. The result, in 1822, was the first permanently fixed photographic image. It was a contact print. The original image and the light-sensitive surface were in direct contact, with no lens between them. Every photograph made since that uses a negative in contact with paper descends from this moment.
A contact print is a photographic image produced by placing a negative directly in contact with a piece of light-sensitive paper or film, exposing the sandwich to light, and then developing the paper. Because the negative and the paper are touching, the resulting print is exactly the same size as the negative. There is no enlargement and no reduction. The process is simple, requires no enlarger, and produces prints with maximum sharpness and detail because no lens is introduced between the negative and the print.

The basic procedure is straightforward. In a darkroom under safelight, a sheet of photographic paper is placed on a flat surface, emulsion side up. A negative is placed on top of the paper, emulsion side down, so that the emulsion layers are in direct contact. A sheet of glass is placed on top to press the negative and paper together. Light is briefly shone through the negative onto the paper. The paper is then developed in chemical solutions: developer, stop bath, fixer, and wash.
The printing frame is the key piece of equipment. Since the 1840s, printing frames have consisted of a wooden frame with a glass front and a hinged back held in place by springs. The hinged back allows the photographer to open one half and inspect the progress of the exposure without disturbing the registration between negative and paper. This is important for printing-out papers, like salted paper prints and some silver gelatin POP papers, where the image appears during exposure and the photographer needs to judge when it is done.
Because the print is the same size as the negative, contact printing is most practical with large-format negatives. An 8x10 inch negative produces an 8x10 inch print. A 4x5 inch negative produces a 4x5 inch print. For 35mm film, contact prints are typically used as proof sheets, allowing the photographer to see all 36 exposures on a single sheet of paper and select which ones to enlarge.
Origins and History
Contact printing is the oldest photographic printing method. Niepce's 1822 heliograph was a contact print, made by placing a transparent engraving directly on a bitumen-coated plate. When Talbot invented the calotype in 1840, he made positive prints by contact printing the paper negative onto salted paper. All calotype prints were contact prints, which is why they are the same size as the negative.
The daguerreotype was not a contact print in the traditional sense because it was a direct positive on a plate, not a print from a negative. But the cyanotype, invented by Herschel in 1842, was a contact printing process. Anna Atkins's photograms of algae were contact prints, made by placing the specimens directly on sensitized paper.
Throughout the 19th century, most photographic prints were contact prints. Albumen prints, salted paper prints, and platinum prints were all made by contact printing. The negative was placed in a printing frame with the sensitized paper, exposed to sunlight, and developed. The invention of the enlarger in the late 19th century made enlargement possible, but contact printing remained the standard for fine art prints because it produced superior sharpness and tonal range.
In the 20th century, contact printing became associated with large-format photography. Ansel Adams made many of his finest prints as contact prints from 8x10 negatives. Edward Weston's Pepper No. 30 (1930) was a contact print from an 8x10 negative, and the print has a level of detail that no enlarged print can match.

Niepce made the first contact print in 1822, reproducing an engraving of Cardinal d'Amboise on a bitumen-coated plate. His process, called heliography, used sunlight to harden bitumen through a transparent print placed in direct contact. The process required several hours of exposure in direct sun. William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877)
Talbot's calotype process was entirely dependent on contact printing. The paper negative was placed against salted paper in a printing frame, exposed to sunlight, and developed. Every print in The Pencil of Nature (1844-1846) was a contact print from a paper negative.
Edward Weston (1886-1958)
Weston made contact prints from his 8x10 negatives throughout his career. His prints of peppers, shells, and nudes have a level of detail and tonal range that comes from the direct contact between negative and paper. Weston did not enlarge because he believed the contact print preserved the quality of the negative without the degradation that a lens introduces.
Ansel Adams (1902-1984)
Adams used both contact printing and enlargement. For his finest prints from 8x10 negatives, he preferred contact printing. The contact print preserved the full tonal range of the negative, which Adams had carefully controlled using the Zone System. Adams's Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park (1944) exists as both a contact print from the 8x10 negative and as an enlarged print. The contact print has a clarity and tonal depth that the enlargement approaches but does not equal.
In an era of digital enlargement, contact printing might seem obsolete. It is not. Large-format photographers still contact print because the process produces prints with a level of detail and tonal smoothness that enlargement cannot match. When the negative is 8x10 inches or larger, the contact print is a finished work, not a proof.
Contact printing is also the basis for most alternative process photography. Platinum prints, palladium prints, salted paper prints, and cyanotypes are all contact printing processes. They require ultraviolet light for exposure, which means sunlight or a UV light source, and they require large negatives because they cannot be enlarged. The alternative process revival that began in the 1970s and continues today is built on contact printing.
The Albumen and Salted Paper Book by James M. Reilly, available through the Cultural Heritage Image Resource, describes the printing frame as "perhaps the single most important piece of equipment" in 19th-century photographic printing.
