The first exercise in Kimon Nicolaides's The Natural Way to Draw (1941) produces drawings that look like they were made by someone who has never held a pencil. The lines wander. The proportions are wrong. Fingers connect to wrists. Eyes float off faces. A hand drawn through this exercise looks like a map of a coastline drawn by a cartographer who keeps losing track of where the land ends and the sea begins. And Nicolaides intended exactly this. The exercise is not designed to produce a good drawing. It is designed to produce a specific kind of seeing, and the drawing is just the record of that seeing.
Blind contour drawing is a drawing exercise in which the artist draws the contour of a subject without looking at the paper. The eye follows the contour of the subject slowly, and the hand moves at the same pace on the paper, as if the pencil point were touching the subject's surface. The exercise was developed by Kimon Nicolaides and published posthumously in The Natural Way to Draw in 1941. It has been a standard exercise in art education ever since, and it is one of the most widely taught drawing techniques in the world.

The exercise is simple in description and demanding in practice. Choose a subject. A hand, a flower, a shell, or a shoe are common choices. Position the subject so you can see it clearly. Place your pencil on the paper. Focus your eye on a single point on the subject's contour. Begin moving your eye slowly along the contour, and let your hand move at the same pace on the paper. Do not look at the paper. Do not lift the pencil. Continue until you have completed the contour or until you reach a point where the contour turns inward and you need to reposition.
Nicolaides's instructions are precise. He wrote: "Imagine that your pencil point is touching the model instead of the paper. Without taking your eyes off the model, wait until you are convinced that the pencil is touching that point on the model upon which your eyes are fastened. Then move your eye slowly along the contour of the model and move the pencil slowly along the paper. As you do this, keep the conviction that the pencil point is actually touching the contour. The exercise works by forcing a specific kind of attention. When you draw while looking at both the subject and the paper, the brain constantly switches between observation and production. You look at the subject, then at the paper, then back. Each switch involves a context shift that interrupts the flow of observation. Blind contour drawing eliminates the production side entirely. There is no checking, no correcting, no adjusting. The brain is freed to focus entirely on the act of seeing, and the hand records what the eye sees without the intervention of the conscious mind's editing function.
The result is a drawing that is inaccurate in proportion but accurate in detail. The lines wander because the hand cannot correct for the eye's movement, but the quality of observation, the specific curves, indentations, and transitions that the eye followed, is recorded with a fidelity that normal drawing does not achieve. Blind contour drawing was developed by Kimon Nicolaides (1891-1938), who taught at the Art Students League in New York from 1922 until his death in 1938. Nicolaides built his curriculum around the live model, with students positioned to see the pose from every angle. His method was based on the principle that drawing is an extension of perception, not a set of technical skills. He wrote: "Learning to draw is really a matter of learning to see, to see correctly, and that means a good deal more than merely looking with the eye."
Nicolaides's book The Natural Way to Draw was compiled and edited after his death by his student and collaborator Mamie Harmon, with help from Revington Arthur, Ben Ross, and Muriel Walcoff, who had studied with him at the League in the early 1930s. The book was published in 1941 and has been in continuous print ever since. It lays out a year-long course of fifteen-hour schedules, alternating exercises like contour and gesture drawing to develop different modes of seeing. The contour exercise teaches slow, careful observation. The gesture exercise teaches rapid, whole-body seeing. Betty Edwards extended Nicolaides's work in her 1979 book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Edwards called her version "pure contour drawing" and made one significant change: she prohibited looking at the paper throughout the entire exercise, whereas Nicolaides allowed occasional glances when the contour left the edge of the subject and turned inward. Edwards framed the exercise in terms of brain lateralization, arguing that it shifts the brain from left-mode processing, which relies on symbols and conventions, to right-mode processing, which relies on direct perception. A 2024 article on Julian Brasington's studio notes compares the two versions: "In Edwards' exercise, you sit side on to the subject of your drawing. She suggests using your hand as your first subject. You look at the hand that you are drawing, your paper at a right angle to it, out of your sight, and you draw the palm of your hand, following first one crease and then the next and so on for five minutes, and all the time looking solely at your hand and never at your drawing." A master's thesis from China examined Nicolaides's teaching system in detail, describing "blind drawing" as a method that "lays stress on students' personal feel and emphasizes that students should in the first place comprehend things by using all their sensory organs instead of drawing up things." The thesis notes that the system "has blazed a new trail and produced an effect on the whole contemporary teaching of life-drawing in America." Read the thesis abstract at Globethesis.
Nicolaides developed the blind contour exercise as part of his teaching at the Art Students League. His method was built around the live model and emphasized tactile observation over technical skill. Nicolaides's core philosophy, stated at the beginning of The Natural Way to Draw, was that drawing is an extension of perception. He wrote: "You should draw not what the thing looks like, not even what it is, but what it is doing." His method was the counterpoint to the academic construction approach of his colleague George Bridgman, who taught structural anatomy at the League. Where Bridgman taught the figure as an assembly of structural forms, Nicolaides taught it as an experience of sensory contact.
Edwards adapted Nicolaides's contour exercise in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1979), one of the best-selling art instruction books of all time. Edwards's version, called "pure contour drawing," prohibits all looking at the paper. She frames the exercise as a tool for accessing right-brain processing, which she associates with the ability to draw. While the neuroscience behind Edwards's left-brain/right-brain framework has been revised in subsequent decades, the exercise itself remains effective. The 4th edition of her book, published in 2012, continues to teach pure contour drawing as the first exercise.
Harmon was Nicolaides's student and collaborator who posthumously compiled and edited The Natural Way to Draw. Without Harmon's work, Nicolaides's method would have been lost when he died in 1938 at the age of 47. Harmon organized his notes, lesson plans, and exercises into the book that has been in print since 1941.
Nicolaides taught alongside George Bridgman, John Sloan, and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League. Bridgman taught academic construction of the figure. Sloan was a leading figure of the Ashcan School, focused on American realism. Miller taught classical composition and Renaissance technique applied to modern urban subjects. Nicolaides's method, with its emphasis on sensory experience over structural formula, was the counterpoint to these approaches, and the League's tolerance for diverse teaching methods allowed his system to flourish.
The exercise requires minimal materials: a pencil and paper. Nicolaides recommended a 3B pencil with a fine point and cream-colored manila paper, about 15 by 20 inches, fastened to a board. The specific materials matter less than the commitment to the process.
Choose a subject with complex contours. Your non-dominant hand is the classic choice because it is always available and has enough detail to sustain a long observation. A shoe, a crumpled paper bag, or a plant also work well.
Position yourself so you can see the subject clearly without turning your head. Place your pencil on the paper. Focus your eye on a single point on the subject's contour. Begin moving your eye along the contour at the pace of a slow walk. Let your hand move at the same pace. Do not look at the paper. Do not lift the pencil. If the contour turns inward, Nicolaides allowed a brief glance at the paper to reposition. Edwards prohibited any looking.
Continue for at least five minutes. The first minute will feel uncomfortable. The brain will demand to check the paper. Resist. The discomfort is the point. It is the feeling of the brain being forced into a mode of attention it is not used to.
When you finish, look at the drawing. It will be wrong. The proportions will be distorted. Lines will end up in places they should not be. But somewhere in the drawing, you will find passages of extraordinary specificity: a curve of a knuckle, the exact angle of a fingernail, the transition between two fingers. These passages are the reward. They are the record of moments when your eye was seeing with a precision that normal looking does not achieve.
Blind contour drawing is a specific exercise within contour drawing, which is the broader technique of rendering form through line. Gesture drawing is the complementary exercise in Nicolaides's method: where blind contour teaches slow, careful observation, gesture teaches rapid, whole-body seeing. Hatching and cross hatching are tonal techniques that can be added once the contour foundation is established.

This is the one technique in this glossary that you can practice immediately, without instruction, without materials beyond a pencil and paper, and without any prior drawing experience. The exercise does not require skill. It requires attention. That is the whole point.
Take a pencil and a piece of paper. Hold the pencil normally. Place your non-dominant hand in front of you, palm up, fingers slightly curled. Focus your eye on the tip of one finger. Place the pencil on the paper. Begin moving your eye along the contour of your hand, following the edge of the finger, the curve of the knuckle, the line where the palm folds. Let your hand move at the same pace. Do not look at the paper. Continue for five minutes.
When you finish, you will have a drawing that does not look like a hand. But you will also have spent five minutes looking at your hand with more attention than you have ever given it before. That attention is what the exercise teaches, and it is the foundation of every other drawing technique.
