What Was the Ashcan School?
The Ashcan School was never a formal school or an organized group with a manifesto. The term itself was coined in derision. A drawing by George Bellows captioned Disappointments of the Ash Can appeared in the Philadelphia Record in April 1915. A year later, in April 1916, the cartoonist Art Young used the phrase "ashcan school" in a disparaging critique in the New York Sun, complaining about "pictures of ashcans and girls hitching up their skirts on Horatio Street." The artists found the label amusing and adopted it themselves. The name soon lost its negative connotations.
What united these painters was Henri's credo: "art for life's sake," rather than "art for art's sake." They believed that the worthiness of immigrant and working-class life was a legitimate artistic subject. This was a direct challenge to the American Impressionists who dominated the art scene at the time, with their pleasing displays of gardens, women in white dresses, and peaceful rural idylls. Historical Context and Origins
The Ashcan School grew out of Philadelphia in the 1890s. Robert Henri (1865-1929) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1886 to 1888 under Thomas Anshutz, who had himself studied with Thomas Eakins. Eakins had defied Victorian decorum with his bold realism, and he became the lodestar for Henri and his associates. After spending 1888 to 1891 at the Academie Julian in Paris, Henri returned to Philadelphia and began teaching at the School of Design for Women while giving private art classes.
Beginning in 1892, Henri became the mentor to four Philadelphia newspaper illustrators: William Glackens (1870-1938), George Luks (1866-1933), Everett Shinn (1876-1953), and John Sloan (1871-1951). Robert Henri (1865-1929)
Henri was the leader and teacher of the group. He had the most extensive academic training of any Ashcan painter, having studied in Philadelphia and Paris. His Portrait of Willie Gee (1904, Newark Museum) shows a working-class boy with direct, dignified presence. Henri's teaching, collected in his 1923 book The Art Spirit, influenced generations of American painters. George Bellows (1882-1925)
Bellows was the youngest and most physically aggressive painter of the group. His Both Members of This Club (1909, National Gallery of Art, Washington) and Stag at Sharkey's (1909, Cleveland Museum of Art) depict illegal boxing matches with thick, muscular paint and bodies flung across the canvas. Bellows also painted Forty-Two Kids (1907, Corcoran Collection), showing boys swimming in the polluted East River. John Sloan (1871-1951)
Sloan painted the streets of New York with observational precision and humor. His McSorley's Bar (1912, Detroit Institute of Arts) shows the interior of a famous East Village saloon, with men drinking in the warm, dark light. Sloan also contributed illustrations to The Masses, a radical socialist magazine, though he resisted the label of social reformer. His etchings of New York street scenes, four of which are held in the Met's Department of Drawings and Prints, show the city with the eye of a former newspaperman.
George Luks (1866-1933)
Luks was the most flamboyant personality of the group. He once proclaimed, "I can paint with a shoestring dipped in pitch and lard." His Hester Street (1905, Brooklyn Museum) depicts the crowded Jewish quarter of New York's Lower East Side, with vendors, shoppers, and children filling the canvas. Luks had worked as a newspaper illustrator and even as a cartoonist, and his painting retains the quick, summary quality of someone trained to capture a scene on deadline.
Everett Shinn (1876-1953)
Shinn was the most theatrical of the Ashcan painters. His Footlight Flirtation (1912, private collection) and his pastel of Herald Square show the energy of New York's entertainment district. Shinn had worked as an illustrator for the Philadelphia Press and brought a draftsman's speed to his painting. He was also the only member of The Eight who had experience as a muralist and set designer.

Bellows's Both Members of This Club (1909) shows two boxers in a private club, their bodies locked in violent motion. The paint is thick and dark, with the fighters emerging from a murky background. The title refers to the fact that police raids on boxing matches were common, so clubs claimed both fighters as "members" to evade the law. Look at the way Bellows uses the ring ropes to frame the action and the faces of the spectators behind them.
Luks's Hester Street (1905) captures the bustle of the Lower East Side. Jewish immigrants in dark coats fill the street, shopping from pushcart vendors. The painting is not sentimental. Luks paints the crowd as a mass of individual faces and gestures, each one observed with a newspaperman's eye for detail.
Sloan's McSorley's Bar (1912) shows the interior of the famous bar at 15 East 7th Street, which still operates today. Men sit at tables and stand at the bar in the amber light. The painting has the warm darkness of a Rembrandt interior, but the subjects are working-class New Yorkers, not Dutch burghers.
Henri's Portrait of Willie Gee (1904) is a portrait of a young boy, probably an immigrant, painted with directness and sympathy. The boy's face is the focus, set against a dark background. Henri gives him the dignity that academic portraiture reserved for the wealthy.
Glackens's At Mouquin's (1905, Art Institute of Chicago) shows a well-dressed couple at a fashionable restaurant. The woman's face is flushed, the table is covered with wine glasses. It is the Ashcan painters' version of high society, painted with the same dark palette and quick brushwork they used for street scenes.
Timeline and Evolution
The Ashcan School's active period spans roughly 1900 to 1914, with the most concentrated activity between 1904 and 1913. Henri began teaching in Philadelphia in 1892 and moved to New York in 1900. The four Philadelphia illustrators followed by 1904. The National Arts Club exhibition in 1904 was their first group showing in New York. The Eight exhibited at Macbeth Galleries in February 1908, generating publicity and sales. The Exhibition of Independent Artists in 1910 was a larger, no-jury, no-prize show organized by Henri. The Armory Show in 1913 brought European modernism to New York on a massive scale and shifted the conversation away from the Ashcan painters' realism.

Edward Hopper, who is sometimes incorrectly grouped with the Ashcan School, rejected the label but shared their interest in the American city. The Ashcan painters' commitment to depicting immigrant and working-class life also connects them to the documentary photographers of the period, including Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's 2024 reinstallation of its Ashcan gallery, timed to coincide with the opening of the Whitney Museum's new downtown location, highlighted the role of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney as an early supporter.
