Explore the life, art, and radical ideas of Andy Warhol. From Campbell's Soup Cans to The Factory and his celebrity portraits, discover how he questioned what art is and permanently changed how we think about consumer culture.
New York replaced Paris as the art capital after World War II. The Ashcan School, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and the gallery system of 57th Street and Chelsea made New York the center of the art world. Here is how it happened.
Edward Hopper's Nighthawks is one of the most iconic American paintings. Discover when and why it was painted, why there is no door, who the four figures are, and why a painting of a 1940s diner became the definitive image of modern urban loneliness.
In 1962, a thirty-three-year-old commercial illustrator named Andy Warhol walked into the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles and saw thirty-two canvases stacked on shelves, each showing a different variety of Campbell's Soup. He had painted them by hand, using a projector and a stencil, but they looked like they came off a factory line. A nearby gallery owner, Dennis Hopper, bought one for a hundred dollars. The paintings were not about soup. They were about what happens when you take the most ordinary object in American life and put it on a wall where people expect to see art. The question Warhol was asking was simple: why is this not art? And the answer, it turned out, was that it was.
Pop Art was an art movement that emerged in Britain and the United States in the mid-1950s and peaked in the 1960s. Pop artists took their subjects from mass culture: comic strips, advertisements, product packaging, movie stars, newspaper photographs, billboards. They used the visual language of commercial reproduction, including Ben-Day dots, screen printing, and flat, unmodulated color, to make paintings and sculptures that looked as if they had been manufactured rather than handcrafted. The movement was a direct response to Abstract Expressionism, whose emotional intensity and personal abstraction the Pop artists found excessive and self-important. Where Pollock poured his psyche onto the canvas, Warhol printed a soup label onto it.
This entry covers what Pop Art was, how it emerged on both sides of the Atlantic, which artists defined it, and how to recognize it in a museum. In October 2026, the Whitney Museum of American Art opens "Roy Lichtenstein: Like New," a major retrospective bringing together roughly 130 works from the early 1940s through the 1990s. Pop Art is the incorporation of mass-produced imagery and commercial techniques into fine art. The term was coined by the British critic Lawrence Alloway in 1958 to describe a tendency among younger artists to use the artifacts of popular culture as subject matter. The movement had two distinct origins: the Independent Group in London, active from 1952 to 1955, and a loose constellation of artists in New York who began working with commercial imagery around 1960.
The Independent Group met at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. Its members, including Richard Hamilton, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Reyner Banham, held discussions about science, technology, advertising, and popular culture. Hamilton's collage Just what is it that makes today's homes so different? (1956, Kunsthalle Tubingen) is generally cited as the first Pop Art work. It shows a bodybuilder holding a Tootsie Pop, a pin-up on a sofa, a tape recorder, a vacuum cleaner, and a framed comic strip on the wall, all assembled into an interior that looks like an advertisement for consumer paradise. The collage was originally designed as a poster for the exhibition "This Is Tomorrow" at the Whitechapel Gallery in London.
In the United States, Pop Art emerged independently. Jasper Johns painted targets, flags, and numbers in 1954-1955, treating familiar symbols as subjects worthy of the same attention that Abstract Expressionists gave to their personal gestures. Robert Rauschenberg's "Combines" of the 1950s incorporated real objects like a stuffed eagle, a tire, and a bed into paintings. These works opened the door for the generation that followed: Warhol, Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and Claes Oldenburg, who all began showing work in New York galleries between 1961 and 1962.
Pop Art was a product of postwar consumer culture. The United States in the 1950s experienced an unprecedented expansion of mass media: television, color magazines, billboard advertising, supermarket packaging, and comic books. The visual environment of daily life was increasingly dominated by commercial images designed to be consumed quickly and forgotten. Pop artists took those images and slowed them down, forcing viewers to look at them the way they would look at a painting in a museum.
The Leo Castelli Gallery in New York was the movement's commercial center. Castelli gave Lichtenstein his first solo show in 1962, Warhol his first in 1964, and Rosenquist his first in 1962. Henry Geldzahler, the curator of twentieth-century art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, recalled visiting these artists' studios in 1961 and noticing that they were "drawing on a common source of imagination." The Margulies Collection in Miami, in its 2025-2026 Pop Art exhibition, quoted Geldzahler's observation that this was "an instant history of art, a history of art that became so aware of itself as to make a leap that went beyond art itself." The New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut presented "Pop! American Art in the 1960s" from July 2025 through May 2026, drawn from the collections of the Whitney Museum and the Ulrich Museum. The exhibition framed Pop Art as a movement that "broke from traditional artistic hierarchies by embracing the slick aesthetic of advertising, television, billboards, print media, shop windows, and comic strips." Warhol is the defining Pop artist. He began his career as a commercial illustrator in New York, drawing shoes for fashion advertisements. His Campbell's Soup Cans (1962, Museum of Modern Art, New York) consist of thirty-two canvases, one for each variety of soup the company produced at the time. His Marilyn Diptych (1962, Tate) uses a publicity photograph of Marilyn Monroe, screen-printed fifty times in color on one panel and twenty-five times in black and white on the other. The repetition is the point: the image is not unique, it is a product, and Monroe herself was a product of the Hollywood star system. Warhol's Brillo Boxes (1964) are wooden boxes silk-screened to look exactly like supermarket packaging, stacked in the gallery as if they had just been delivered. The philosopher Arthur Danto wrote that Brillo Boxes marked "the end of art" because they made it impossible to distinguish an artwork from an ordinary object by appearance alone.
Lichtenstein turned comic strips into large-scale paintings. Look Mickey (1961, National Gallery of Art, Washington) was his first Pop painting, based on a Disney comic book image. Drowning Girl (1963, Museum of Modern Art, New York) shows a woman drowning in turbulent water with a thought bubble reading: "I don't care! I'd rather sink than call Brad for help!" Whaam! (1963, Tate) depicts a fighter jet destroying another plane, taken from a DC Comics war story. Lichtenstein painted these images by hand, but he made them look machine-made, using Ben-Day dots, the inexpensive printing method used in comic books, applied through stencils. The Whitney's 2026 retrospective "Roy Lichtenstein: Like New" reunites, for the first time, all the works from his first exhibition of Pop-style work at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1962. The show also includes a recreation of three murals, including a nearly 96-foot-long iteration of Greene Street Mural (1983).
Rosenquist was a billboard painter before he was a gallery artist. He painted signs for Coca-Cola and Bulova watches on buildings in Times Square, and he brought that scale and technique into the gallery. F-111 (1965, Museum of Modern Art, New York) is a room-length painting, eighty-six feet long, that juxtaposes a military jet with spaghetti, a fireball, a tire, and a little girl under a hair dryer. The painting wraps around the gallery walls, surrounding the viewer the way billboards surround a driver on the highway. Rosenquist's work is about the collision of images in mass media, the way advertising presents unrelated things side by side and lets the viewer make connections.
Oldenburg made sculpture from everyday objects. Floor Burger (1962, Museum of Modern Art, New York) is a seven-foot-long stuffed canvas hamburger. Soft Toilet (1966, Whitney Museum) is a vinyl sculpture of a toilet that sags and droops. Oldenburg's later "Geometric Mouse" sculptures and his monumental public works, like the Clothespin (1976) in Philadelphia, brought Pop Art's vocabulary into sculpture and public art.
Hamilton was the founding figure of British Pop Art. His 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today's homes so different? established the template for Pop Art: commercial imagery, consumer products, and the vocabulary of advertising assembled into a fine art context. Hamilton also designed the cover of the Beatles' White Album (1968), a blank white gatefold sleeve with the band's name embossed, which is itself a Pop Art gesture.
Look for commercial imagery first. If the painting shows a product, a celebrity, a comic strip panel, or a brand logo, it is likely Pop Art or Pop-influenced. The subject matter is the first indicator: soup cans, Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Mouse, a tire, a hamburger, a comic book explosion.
Then look at the technique. Pop artists used commercial reproduction methods. Warhol's screen prints show the slight misregistration and uneven ink coverage of the silkscreen process. Lichtenstein's Ben-Day dots are hand-painted but mimic mechanical printing. Rosenquist's flat, unmodulated color comes from his billboard painting background. The surface of a Pop painting is deliberately impersonal, the opposite of the visible brushwork and emotional gesture of Abstract Expressionism.
Finally, look at the scale. Pop Art enlarged small images to monumental size. Lichtenstein's comic strip panels, originally printed at two inches square, became paintings six feet tall. Warhol's soup can, originally four inches tall on a supermarket shelf, became a canvas twenty inches high. The change in scale changes the meaning: the image stops being an advertisement and becomes something you have to look at the way you look at a painting.

Pop Art's influence on contemporary art and visual culture is total. The idea that commercial imagery can be fine art is now so accepted that it is difficult to imagine a time when it was controversial. Warhol's fusion of art and celebrity, his use of mass production techniques, and his blurring of the line between original and copy anticipated the conditions of digital image culture, where every image is a copy and every copy is potentially an artwork.
The movement also opened the door for later developments. Conceptual Art took Pop Art's questioning of the art object to its logical conclusion by making the idea the artwork. Postmodernism adopted Pop Art's appropriation of existing imagery as a central strategy. Neo-Pop artists like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami extended Warhol's project into the twenty-first century, producing work that is simultaneously art, commodity, and brand.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans and Gold Marilyn Monroe (1962), Lichtenstein's Drowning Girl, and Rosenquist's F-111. The Tate in London holds Marilyn Diptych and Whaam!. The National Gallery of Art in Washington holds Look Mickey and Lavender Mist (the Pollock, for comparison). The Whitney Museum's 2026 Lichtenstein retrospective will be the most comprehensive presentation of his work in decades.
If you want to understand Pop Art, stand in front of Campbell's Soup Cans at MoMA and notice how long you look at them. The paintings are the same size as actual soup cans, enlarged slightly, and they are installed in a row on the wall as if on a supermarket shelf. The longer you look, the more you notice: the slight variations in the fleur-de-lis pattern, the different colors of the labels, the fact that each can is a portrait of a specific product. Warhol said he painted soup because he used to eat it for lunch every day. That is the Pop Art gesture: taking the thing you see every day and making it visible.
