In 1790, William Blake wrote in a letter that he had seen the prophet Ezekiel under a tree in Peckham Rye, in south London. He was eight years old at the time. Blake spent his entire life painting and engraving what he saw in these visions, and the art world spent most of that life ignoring him. He died in 1827 in near poverty, known mostly as a poet. Today, his illuminated books and paintings are recognized as some of the earliest examples of what we now call visionary art, a genre that takes inner experience, spiritual perception, and altered states of consciousness as its subject matter rather than the observable physical world.
Visionary art is art that purports to transcend the physical world and portray a wider vision of awareness, including spiritual or mystical themes, or is based in such experiences. The term is recent as a recognized genre, at most a half-century old, but the practice of making art from visionary experience goes back to the earliest known human image-making. Cave paintings at Lascaux, shamanic art from indigenous cultures, religious iconography, and the mystical paintings of Blake all share elements of what we now call visionary art. What unites these disparate traditions is the conviction that the artist is depicting something real, something seen with the inner eye rather than the physical one.

Visionary art is not easily defined. As a recognized genre it is recent, and its first-generation masters are still practicing. The boundaries are still expanding. But certain characteristics recur across the work. Visionary art depicts spiritual beings, deities, mandalas, chakras, esoteric symbols, and other imagery drawn from mystical or religious traditions. It often features intricate, fractal-like patterns and vivid color palettes that mimic the visual experiences induced by deep meditation or psychedelic substances. The work tends to be highly detailed and complex, with layers of meaning that reveal themselves on close inspection. And the goal is often to transport the viewer into an expanded state of awareness.
The distinction between visionary art and surrealism is worth making. Surrealism, as defined by Andre Breton in his 1924 manifesto, was based on automatism and the unconscious mind, drawing on Freudian psychology. Visionary art, by contrast, is based on conscious spiritual or mystical experience. The surrealist paints dreams. The visionary artist paints visions. The distinction between visionary art and psychedelic art is more subtle. Psychedelic art tends to be more chaotic and exploratory, often tied to the counterculture of the 1960s. Visionary art tends to have a more refined and intentional structure, often imbued with spiritual significance drawn from specific wisdom traditions.

The genealogy of visionary art can be traced through several movements. Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450-1516) painted hellscapes and heavenly visions with a level of detail and imagination that still defies explanation. His The Garden of Earthly Delights (c. 1500-1505, Museo del Prado, Madrid) is a triptych that depicts Paradise, the Garden of Earthly Delights, and Hell, filled with hybrid creatures, impossible architecture, and symbolic tableaux that scholars still debate. Bosch is not usually called a "visionary artist" in the contemporary sense, but his work is a direct ancestor of the genre.
William Blake (1757-1827) is the next major figure. Blake's illuminated books, including Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789-1794) and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (c. 1790), combine text and image in a form that Blake invented himself. His paintings, such as The Ancient of Days (1794, British Museum, London), show a figure reaching down from the clouds with a compass, measuring the void. Blake claimed this image came to him in a vision. His work was largely dismissed during his lifetime, but his influence on visionary art is foundational.
In the late 19th century, the Symbolist movement produced artists who pushed toward visionary territory. Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) painted mythological and biblical scenes filled with jewel-like detail and occult symbolism. His Jupiter and Semele (1895, Musee Gustave Moreau, Paris) shows a god surrounded by a dense field of symbolic figures, painted with a precision that visionary artists would later adopt. Odilon Redon (1840-1916) created charcoal drawings and lithographs, called "noirs," that depict floating eyes, spiders, and other dreamlike imagery. His later pastels, such as The Cyclops (c. 1914, Kroeller-Mueller Museum, Otterlo), show a giant eye embedded in a mountain, watching a small figure below.
The Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, established in 1946, is considered the most important technical and philosophical catalyst for contemporary visionary art. Its artists, including Ernst Fuchs (1930-2015), Rudolf Hausner (1918-1995), Arik Brauer (1929-2021), Wolfgang Hutter (1928-2014), and Anton Lehmden (1929-2018), developed a style based on Old Master painting techniques applied to visionary and fantastic subjects. Fuchs, who was also a sculptor, architect, and poet, became the most influential figure. Several artists who would later work in visionary art trained under Fuchs, including Mati Klarwein (1932-2002), Robert Venosa (1936-2011), and De Es Schwertberger (born 1942).
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) is a more recent addition to the visionary art canon, though her work predates most of the artists above. A Swedish painter and mystic, af Klint began producing abstract paintings in 1906, years before Kandinsky's first abstract watercolor. Her work was inspired by spiritualist seances and her involvement with theosophy. Her series Paintings for the Temple (1906-1915) consists of 193 works, many featuring geometric forms, spiral patterns, and symbolic color schemes that af Klint said were dictated to her by spiritual guides. Her work was not shown publicly until 1986 and was brought to wide attention by a 2018 retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The Guggenheim exhibition page documents this landmark show.
Alex Grey is the most widely known contemporary visionary artist. His Sacred Mirrors series, created between 1979 and 1989, consists of 21 life-sized paintings that examine the physical and metaphysical anatomy of the human body. Each painting presents a figure facing the viewer, showing layers from the skeletal system through the nervous system to what Grey calls the "spiritual energy" body. The paintings are displayed in frames sculpted with the history of humanity and the universe. Grey and his wife, the artist Allyson Grey, founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM) in Wappingers Falls, New York, as a permanent sanctuary for visionary art. The Entheon building on the CoSM property opened in 2021 as a 12,000-square-foot exhibition space. Grey's work is heavily influenced by his experiences with psychedelic substances, particularly DMT, and by his study of Vajrayana Buddhism.
Fuchs was the central figure of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. His painting The Last Supper (1957, private collection) shows Christ surrounded by figures rendered in a style that combines Old Master glazing techniques with visionary and esoteric imagery. Fuchs developed a painting method he called the "Mischtechnik," which involves alternating layers of egg tempera and oil glazes to build up luminous, jewel-like surfaces. This technique has been adopted by many contemporary visionary artists and is taught at visionary art workshops around the world.
Caruana is a Maltese artist, writer, and lecturer who has contributed significantly to the contemporary visionary art movement through his Manifesto of Visionary Art (2009). His paintings, such as The Angel of the West (2008), combine elements from various spiritual traditions with the precise painting techniques he learned from Ernst Fuchs. Caruana's writings have helped define the genre's theoretical framework.
Sage studied under Ernst Fuchs and has become one of the leading figures of the younger generation of visionary artists. Her work combines the Mischtechnik with contemporary subjects, often depicting figures in states of transformation surrounded by geometric patterns and symbolic imagery. She is also a teacher, running workshops that pass on the technical methods of the Vienna School to new artists.
Visionary art has become deeply connected to electronic music festivals and transformational festival culture. Events like Burning Man in Nevada, Boom Festival in Portugal, and Envision Festival in Costa Rica feature visionary art installations, live painting performances, and immersive environments. This connection has given the genre a contemporary audience that traditional gallery spaces never provided. The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, founded in 1995, is the only museum in the United States devoted entirely to visionary art, though its focus is broader than the contemporary movement, including self-taught and outsider artists whose work is driven by inner vision rather than formal training.
The 2022 and 2024 Venice Biennales reflected what critics have called a "spiritual turn" in the broader art world. Cecilia Alemani's 2022 exhibition "The Milk of Dreams" drew on the surrealism of Leonora Carrington to explore myth, magic, and spirituality. Adriano Pedrosa's 2024 edition "Foreigners Everywhere" focused on Indigenous and non-Western traditions that provide alternate visions of humanity's relationship with nature and the spirit world. As Art in America reported, the institutional art world is now embracing what visionary artists have been doing for decades.
Visionary art overlaps with surrealism, which also draws on inner experience, though surrealism is rooted in Freudian psychology and automatism rather than spiritual vision. It shares techniques with symbolism, the late 19th-century movement that rejected realism in favor of dreamlike and mystical subjects. For historical precedents, the British Museum in London holds Blake's The Ancient of Days and other works from his illuminated books. The Museo del Prado in Madrid has Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights. And the Guggenheim's 2018 Hilma af Klint retrospective, though no longer on view, established af Klint as a foundational figure whose work bridges abstraction and visionary experience.
