Walk through the streets of Florence and you will see building facades covered in patterns that look like they were drawn directly into the wall. That is because they were. The designs are sgraffito, a technique where a layer of colored plaster is applied over a contrasting underlayer and then scratched through to reveal the color beneath. The effect is part painting, part drawing, part architecture. It has been used on European buildings since the Renaissance, on pottery since the medieval period, and in easel painting as a way to create texture and linear detail by scraping back through wet or dry layers.
Sgraffito is the technique of scratching through a coating on a hard surface to reveal parts of an underlying layer of contrasting color. The word comes from the Italian "sgraffiare," meaning to scratch, derived from the Latin "exgraffiare" or "dysgraffiare." On walls, it involves applying layers of plaster tinted in contrasting colors and cutting patterns into the surface while the plaster is still wet. On pottery, it involves applying two successive layers of contrasting slip or glaze to an unfired ceramic body and scratching through the top layer. In easel painting, it involves applying one color over a dried layer of another color and scraping through the top layer to reveal the color beneath.

The principle of sgraffito is the same across all its applications: two layers of contrasting color, one on top of the other, with the top layer scratched away to reveal the bottom. The execution differs depending on the material.
In architecture, sgraffito is executed on wet plaster. A base layer of one color is applied to the wall and allowed to set. A second layer of a contrasting color is applied on top. While the top layer is still wet, the artisan scratches through it with a sharp tool to reveal the base layer beneath. The pattern can be geometric, figurative, or architectural in form. Because both layers are lime-based plaster, they bond as they set, creating a durable surface that is integral to the wall.
In ceramics, sgraffito is executed on unfired clay. The vessel is coated with a slip of one color, usually white or light, over a clay body of a contrasting color, usually red or brown. While the slip is still damp, the potter scratches through it to reveal the clay body beneath. The vessel is then fired, fusing the slip and the body into a single object. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has documented this process in detail through their research on sgraffito ware from Nishapur, a 10th-century ceramic production center on the Silk Road. In easel painting, sgraffito is executed on wet or dried paint. A layer of one color is applied and allowed to dry. A second layer of a different color is painted on top. The artist then uses a palette knife, needle, or other sharp tool to scratch through the top layer, revealing the color beneath. This can also be done by scraping through wet paint to reveal the canvas or ground underneath.
Sgraffito on walls has been used in Europe since classical times. The technique was popularized in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, where it became a common method for decorating the facades of public and private buildings. A dissertation on Florentine sgraffito identified 34 buildings with sgraffito decorations from the 14th and 15th centuries, tracing the technique's origins to stone work designs and masonry joints. Two of Raphael's workshop members, Polidoro da Caravaggio and Maturino da Firenze, were among the leading specialists in sgraffito facade decoration in Rome. They painted palace facades in Rome and other cities, though most of their work has weathered away. During the 16th century, the technique spread to Germany, where master builders of the Renaissance adopted it with enthusiasm. Examples can be found in Bavaria, Thuringia, the Engadin, Austria, and Transylvania.
A 2022 study published in the journal Arts examined sgraffito as a method of wall decoration in Renaissance and Mannerist Silesia, documenting approximately 200 surviving decorations and over 100 non-existent ones that have been inventoried through drawings or photographs. Research published in 2017 by Wichterlova and colleagues reconstructed the sgraffito technology used north of the Alps during the Renaissance, identifying two specific methods of shading: one colored with a brush and one smoothed by a trowel, called "trowel shading." Both techniques work with middle grey tones, visually connecting sgraffito to monochromatic chiaroscuro painting. Sgraffito experienced a resurgence around 1890 to 1915 in the context of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Vienna Secession, and Art Nouveau. The English artist Heywood Sumner was identified as the pioneer of this era, with work at St Mary's Church in Sunbury, Surrey, in 1892. In Catalonia, sgraffito was implemented in the early 20th century by Noucentista architects and became a recurrent technique in facade decoration.
In ceramics, sgraffito evolved in the 10th century from earlier slipped glazed wares with color splashes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's research on Nishapur sgraffito ware showed that after the vessel body was formed and dried, it was coated with a white slip made of quartz and feldspar minerals in a kaolin-based material. Designs were scratched through the slip to expose the reddish clay body, and the pots were fired at around 1000 to 1050 degrees Celsius. Colors were then splashed on and the vessels glazed with a quartz-lead solution before a second firing at 700 to 750 degrees.
Polidoro, a member of Raphael's workshop, was one of the leading specialists in sgraffito facade decoration in Rome. He and his partner Maturino da Firenze painted palace facades with sgraffito designs, though most of their work has been lost to weathering. Their influence helped spread the technique throughout Italy and beyond.
The sgraffito decorations of Silesia, documented in the 2022 MDPI study, represent a regional tradition that flourished in the 16th century. The Scholz House in Legnica is a notable example, with decorations that imitate architectural rustication and figurative elements. These works show how sgraffito was adapted to local materials and tastes.
Sumner revived sgraffito in late 19th-century England as part of the Arts and Crafts Movement. His work at St Mary's Church, Sunbury (1892), is considered the pioneer example of the era's sgraffito revival. Sumner's work is sgraffito in the strict sense: scratched plaster, not painted imitation.
