Paint Tube: The Tin Container That Changed Painting Forever

The collapsible paint tube, patented in 1841, made plein air painting practical. From Rand to Renoir to Monet, learn how a tin tube reshaped art history.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir once told his son Jean that "without paints in tubes, there would have been no Cezanne, no Monet, no Sisley or Pissarro, nothing of what journalists were later to call Impressionism." He was talking about the collapsible tin paint tube, patented on September 11, 1841, by an American portrait painter named John Goffe Rand. It is one of the few objects in art history where a single invention can be linked to a concrete change in what painters could do and where they could do it.

The paint tube is a collapsible metal container, originally made of tin, lead, or pewter, designed to store pre-mixed oil paint and dispense it through a screw cap. Before its invention, painters had to grind their own pigments and mix them with linseed oil in the studio, storing any excess in animal bladders sealed with string. The bladder pouch was awkward, prone to leaking, and could not be resealed once opened. The tin tube solved all of these problems. Paint could be manufactured in bulk, stored indefinitely, carried anywhere, and squeezed out in small amounts as needed. This portability is what made plein air painting practical on a large scale.

What Is a Paint Tube and How Does It Work?

A paint tube is a cylindrical container made of soft, collapsible metal, sealed at one end and fitted with a screw cap at the other. The body is typically tin or aluminum. The paint is filled from the bottom, which is then crimped and folded to seal it. When the cap is removed, pressure on the tube body forces paint through the opening. The cap can be replaced to keep the remaining paint fresh.

The key innovation was the collapsibility. A rigid container would leave paint stuck to the walls and inaccessible. A collapsible tube can be rolled from the bottom, pushing all the paint toward the opening. The metal is soft enough to deform by hand but rigid enough to protect the paint from air exposure, which would cause the oil binder to cure and harden.

The screw cap was the second innovation. Earlier containers, including the animal bladder, could not be resealed once opened. The screw cap allows the painter to use part of the paint, cap the tube, and save the rest for later sessions. This seems simple, but it fundamentally changed the economics of painting. Paint could be purchased in small quantities, used over multiple sessions, and transported without waste.

Invention and History

John Goffe Rand was born in 1801 in Bedford, New Hampshire. He worked as an apprentice to a cabinet maker before turning to house and sign painting, where he discovered a talent for portraiture. Samuel F.B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph and himself a painter, encouraged Rand to pursue art. Rand moved to Boston and established his own studio by 1828. In 1831, he sailed for London with, as a friend wrote, "talent, golden anticipation, hope, and with little else."

In London, Rand painted portraits of members of the royal family and English nobility, including Lord Bexley and the Duke and Duchess of Inverness. While working as a portrait painter, he became frustrated with the practical limitations of storing oil paint. The traditional method involved mixing pigment with oil in small amounts and storing the excess in animal bladders, typically pig bladders, tied with string. The bladder pouch was difficult to open, impossible to reseal properly, and prone to bursting. Rand set out to solve this problem.

Rand's first patent, filed with the British Patent Office on March 6, 1841 (patent number 8863), was for "Improvements in preserving paints and other fluids." His second patent, filed September 29, 1842 (patent number 9480), was for "Improvements in making and closing metallic collapsible vessels." He also filed with the United States Patent Office on September 11, 1841 (patent number 2,252). By 1842, the tube was being sold exclusively by Winsor and Newton as "Rand's Patent Collapsible Tube." By the 1850s, the "Rand" had been dropped from the name, and Winsor and Newton Collapsible Paint Tubes were being advertised in trade catalogs in New York and Paris. By 1887, the earliest Sennelier catalogs in Paris listed them. The tube spread rapidly because it solved a real problem for painters and because it enabled a new business model: commercial colormen could manufacture and sell pre-mixed paint in standardized colors, freeing painters from the labor of grinding pigments.

A 1999 study in the Journal of the American Institute for Conservation examined the impact of 19th-century technical inventions on artists' practice. The research noted that the collapsible paint tube "made on-site oil sketching an easy reality" and replaced the traditional leather bladder pouch, which was "difficult to maneuver." The study also documented the concurrent development of the portable easel, which appeared in Goupil and Co. trade catalogs by 1857. Read the study at JAIC.

How the Paint Tube Changed Painting

Before the paint tube, oil painting was a studio-bound craft. Pigments had to be ground by hand on a stone slab, mixed with oil, and used immediately or stored in bladders that leaked and dried out. The process was messy, time-consuming, and essentially immobile. Painters who wanted to work outdoors had to carry pigments, oil, a grinding slab, and bladders of pre-mixed paint, all of which were heavy and fragile.

The paint tube eliminated this burden. A painter could buy a box of twenty or thirty tubes of pre-mixed colors, carry them in a wooden box, and paint anywhere. The tubes were small, sealed, and durable. Combined with the portable box easel, which appeared in the same decade, the paint tube gave painters a mobile studio that could be carried into the forest, to the riverbank, or to the coast.

This portability was not just a convenience. It changed what painters chose to paint and how they painted it. The Barbizon School painters of the 1830s and 1840s, including Theodore Rousseau and Charles-Francois Daubigny, had already begun painting outdoors to capture the changing effects of light and weather. But they were working with the old bladder-and-grinding-stone method, which limited how far they could travel and how long they could work. The paint tube removed these constraints.

The Impressionists, who emerged in the 1860s, were the first generation to grow up with paint tubes as a given. Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and Frederic Bazille met as students and regularly ventured into the countryside to paint outdoors. The paint tube made these expeditions practical. Monet's series paintings of the 1890s, including the Haystacks (1890-1891) and Rouen Cathedral (1892-1894), required him to carry multiple canvases to a site and work on each for only a short time before the light changed. This would have been impossible without portable, pre-mixed paint.

Art historian Anthea Callen has argued that Impressionism "cannot be attributed simply to the ready portability" of paint. She is right that the paint tube did not cause Impressionism by itself. The aesthetic ideas, the reaction against academic painting, and the interest in optical effects were all independent developments. But the paint tube made the practical execution of those ideas possible. Without it, the Impressionists would have been theorists with no way to work the way they wanted to work.

Key Artists and the Paint Tube

John Goffe Rand (1801-1873)

Rand was the inventor, not a great painter. His portraits are competent but unremarkable, and he died in relative obscurity on Long Island in 1873. But his invention outlived him and outlived his paintings. The Smithsonian holds his papers, including biographical sketches, his will, lists of portraits, correspondence, the original patents, and an example of one of the first paint tubes made in a factory. Claude Monet (1840-1926)

Monet was the most prolific plein air painter of the Impressionist generation, and his practice depended entirely on paint tubes. His Impression, Sunrise (1872, Musee Marmottan Monet), the painting that gave Impressionism its name, was painted outdoors in Le Havre with tube paint. His late Water Lilies series, painted at Giverny from 1899 onward, involved carrying tubes and canvases to the edge of his water garden, sometimes working on multiple canvases simultaneously as the light shifted.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)

Renoir was born in the same year that Rand patented the paint tube. His acknowledgment of the tube's importance, quoted by his son Jean, is the most famous statement about the invention's impact on art. Renoir's Bal du moulin de la Galette (1876, Musee d'Orsay) was painted outdoors in Montmartre, a scene of casual Parisian leisure that would have been impossible to execute on location without portable paint.

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903)

Pissarro was the oldest of the Impressionists and the only one who exhibited in all eight Impressionist exhibitions. He painted outdoors throughout his career, from the landscapes around Pontoise in the 1870s to the urban views of Paris in his final years. Pissarro's paintings from Louveciennes, painted in the winter of 1870 alongside Monet, are among the first masterpieces of the Impressionist school, and they were made possible by tube paint carried into the snow.

Winslow Homer (1836-1910)

Homer began as a watercolorist but turned to oil painting in the 1860s. His late marine paintings from Prouts Neck, Maine, such as The Gulf Stream (1899, Metropolitan Museum of Art), were painted in a remote coastal location. The paint tube made it possible for Homer to work far from any studio or colorman, carrying his materials to the edge of the Atlantic.

The Paint Tube Today

The basic design of the paint tube has not changed since 1841. Artists' oil paint, acrylic paint, and watercolor are still sold in collapsible metal tubes with screw caps. The materials have shifted from tin to aluminum for most quality brands, and plastic tubes are used for some student-grade paints, but the principle is identical to Rand's 1841 patent.

What has changed is the range of available colors. In Rand's time, colormen offered perhaps thirty or forty colors. Today, a major manufacturer like Winsor and Newton offers over 100 oil colors, and specialized brands like Michael Harding and Natural Pigments offer even more. The paint tube made this proliferation possible by industrializing paint manufacture. Pigments could be ground and mixed in bulk, filled into tubes by machine, and shipped worldwide.

The paint tube is inseparable from the practice of plein air painting and from the portable easel that accompanied it. It made practical the alla prima technique that the Impressionists used to capture changing light. The paint inside the tube is pigment bound in linseed oil, thinned with solvents as needed. The paint tube itself is not something you see in a museum. But its consequences are everywhere. Every Impressionist painting in every major collection is a product of Rand's invention. When you stand in front of Monet's Haystacks at the Musee d'Orsay, or Pissarro's winter landscapes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you are looking at paintings that could not exist without portable, pre-mixed paint in a collapsible tin tube.

The Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian holds Rand's original patent documents and an example of one of the first factory-made paint tubes. It is a small, unremarkable object, about the size of a modern tube of paint, slightly corroded, with a crimped bottom and a screw cap. It does not look like something that changed art history. But it did.
