In the palace city of Medina Azahara, built by Abd al-Rahman III beginning in 936 CE outside Cordoba, the walls were covered with gilded leather panels. Sheepskin was tanned with oak bark, silvered with tin, embossed through iron stamps with botanical scrollwork and geometric interlace, then painted and gilded by hand. A single panel of 60 by 80 centimeters might require hundreds of individual stamp impressions to cover the surface completely. This was guadameci, one of the most precisely constructed luxury crafts the medieval Islamic world produced. It furnished the palace of the Caliphate, ended up on the walls of French dancehalls three centuries later, and nearly disappeared entirely by the 19th century until two men in the 20th century reconstructed it from museum examples and archival records.

The swivel knife is held almost vertically and guided with the whole hand, not just the fingers, producing smooth, flowing curves. After the outlines are cut, stamping tools add texture, shading, and background patterns. Backgrounding tools push down the areas around the design, making the main image appear raised and three-dimensional. Basketweave and geometric stamps produce repeating patterns that are forgiving for beginners because consistency matters more than artistic precision. After drying, most crafters apply a leather dye or antique stain to highlight the recessed areas, followed by a sealant.

The richest historical traditions in tooled and decorated leather are Islamic in origin. The Islamic bookbinding tradition, developed from the 7th century onward, produced covers of extraordinary complexity using a technique called blind tooling: small metal stamps are impressed into dampened leather without gold or color, creating patterns from the compression alone. Geometric interlace, arabesque floral patterns, and calligraphic inscriptions were combined in compositions of great formal sophistication.
Guadameci leather from Cordoba represents the highest development of Islamic leather tooling. The earliest documented use places it at Medina Azahara, the Caliphal palace city. The process involved sheepskin tanned with oak bark, silvered with tin or vermillion, embossed through iron stamps (brocadores), then painted and gilded by hand. The colored and tooled leather products that emerge from these tanneries represent only a portion of the traditional craft output. In Europe, tooled leather moved from bookbinding and wall coverings into furniture, screens, and household objects. By the 17th century, Amsterdam had established a leather workshop producing decorated panels for the European market. The Victorian period saw the publication of James Revell's A Complete Guide to the Ornamental Leather Work (1854), which treated leather with the same seriousness other makers gave to carving or gilding. The American tradition of decorative leatherwork, associated primarily with Western saddle making and the cowboy equipment trade, developed from the 1840s onward as the cattle industry expanded across the American West. The tooling patterns used on saddles, bridles, chaps, and holsters drew on both Spanish colonial traditions, which themselves derived from Moorish Spain, and new formal developments suited to the materials and needs of frontier life. In 2026, China Daily reported on a leather carving workshop in Xinjiang's pastoral area that is helping herders supplement their incomes while preserving a tradition that stretches back millennia. Meng Lulu, a designer from Urumqi, opened her studio in 2013 after realizing that Xinjiang's leather heritage, despite archaeological evidence dating back over 3,000 years, was categorized as little more than "leather tool and harness making." She trains herders like Alzugul, who had never held a carving knife six months before, to cut and stamp intricate patterns into cowhide, including almond-shaped motifs once used to decorate horse saddles and geometric designs passed down through generations. Romero was a traveling artist and scholar who spent decades in archival research reconstructing the lost techniques of Cordoban guadameci. By the mid-20th century, authentic guadameci did not exist as a living craft. What museums held were 16th and 17th-century examples, studied but not reproducible. The knowledge of how to apply the silver ground, layer the mordants, stamp the ataurique reliefs, and gild correctly was not documented. It was held by individual craftsmen who died without formal apprentices. Romero worked through historical documentation, correspondence, trade records, and the material evidence of surviving panels to reconstruct the process, making it possible for contemporary artisans to produce guadameci again.
Donald King, known as "King of the Cowboys" in leatherworking circles, was instrumental in formalizing the American Western leather tooling tradition. His patterns and teaching materials, produced from the 1950s onward, standardized the floral carving style that defines Western leatherwork. The Figure Carving manual published by Tandy Leather, drawing on King's designs and methods, became the most widely used instructional text in American leathercraft.
Meng Lulu represents the contemporary revival of traditional leather carving in Xinjiang, China. After studying graphic and product design at university, she recognized that the decorative motifs she had seen on saddles, whips, and boots in her childhood among Kazak and Mongolian herder families could be traced to excavated artifacts and ancient stone carvings. She left her newspaper job in 2012 and opened her studio in 2013, training herders to produce leather goods that incorporate traditional patterns into products people can use today. Stohlman was an American leatherworker whose instructional books, including The Art of Hand Sewing Leather and How to Carve Leather, became the foundational texts of modern hobbyist leathercraft. His tooling patterns, characterized by detailed floral and pictorial carving, demonstrated that leather tooling could produce work of genuine artistic complexity, not just repetitive geometric patterns. Leather tooling occupies an unusual position in the craft world.
