Projection mapping is the technique of projecting video onto three-dimensional surfaces rather than flat screens. By mapping the geometry of a building, object, or landscape and then aligning projected images to that geometry, artists can make solid surfaces appear to move, dissolve, transform, and come alive. The technique is also called video mapping, spatial projection, or 3D mapping. Origins and History

A 2024 study published in Estudis Escènics traced the shared history of perceptual illusion and video projection mapping, identifying key milestones across centuries. The research connects contemporary projection mapping to Renaissance linear perspective and its application in trompe l'oeil and Quadratura ceiling paintings, where artists like Andrea Mantegna and Pietro da Cortona created illusions of architectural space extending beyond the physical surface. The 18th-century panorama and phantasmagoria, immersive theatrical experiences using projected images, represent another ancestor. One of the earliest documented projection mapping works was created by Michael Naimark in 1980. Naimark projected images of a living room onto the actual living room's surfaces, creating a layered visual where the real objects and their projected doubles overlapped. The technique was refined through the 1980s and 1990s by artists working at the intersection of video art and computer graphics, but it remained technically demanding and expensive.

The breakthrough came in the 2000s, when digital projectors became bright and affordable enough for large-scale outdoor use, and software tools for mapping and playback became available. The 2010s saw projection mapping explode as a public art form. Refik Anadol (b. 1985)

Anadol's Unsupervised (2022, MoMA) uses machine learning to process 138,151 works from the museum's collection and projects the results as a continuously evolving visual on a 24-foot LED wall. While this is a screen-based work rather than projection mapping, Anadol's practice extends to architectural mapping. His 2023 Casa Batlló commission used climate data to generate visuals projected onto Gaudí's facade, turning atmospheric measurements into organic digital forms. Quayola (b. 1983)

His later works, including projections on war memorials and government buildings, use the technique for political commentary rather than aesthetic spectacle. Wodiczko's practice established projection mapping as a tool for institutional critique, not just visual entertainment.

AntiVJ

The AntiVJ collective, led by Joanie Lemercier, has created projection mapping works that emphasize optical illusion and perceptual manipulation over narrative content. Their works often use geometric forms projected onto simple surfaces, creating the illusion of depth, movement, and dimension where none exists. Projection Mapping Today

Projection mapping in 2026 exists across a spectrum from commercial spectacle to fine art. The Casa Batlló mapping commission has established a model where heritage sites commission contemporary digital artists to create site-specific projections, drawing enormous public audiences. Festivals like BLINK Cincinnati, Vivid Sydney, and the Schlosslichtspiele at ZKM Karlsruhe provide platforms for artists working at architectural scale. The 2025 BLINK Cincinnati festival featured projection artist Wendy Yu's Cincinnatus and Beyond, which used kishotenketsu narrative structure to show a building transforming from civic monument to living ecosystem.

The technology continues to advance. Real-time rendering engines like Unreal Engine allow projection mapping content to be generated live rather than pre-rendered. AI tools are being integrated into the content pipeline, with artists like Crespo and Anadol using machine learning models to generate visual material that is then mapped onto physical surfaces. The result is a hybrid form that combines the physical presence of architecture with the fluidity of digital content.
