In 1939, a 29-year-old critic named Clement Greenberg published an essay called "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" in the Marxist journal Partisan Review. The essay drew a line through Western culture. On one side was the avant-garde: abstract painting, modernist poetry, atonal music. On the other was kitsch: commercial illustration, Hollywood movies, magazine covers. Greenberg argued that the avant-garde was the only authentic art being produced, because it was the only art that concerned itself with the medium itself. Kitsch, by contrast, borrowed the effects of art without the discipline. The essay made Greenberg's reputation, and over the next three decades he built a critical system on its foundation. That system was formalism, and it dominated American art criticism from the 1940s through the 1970s.
Formalism is an approach to art criticism and aesthetics that evaluates artworks based on their visual form rather than their content, subject matter, or historical context. A formalist critic asks how a painting is composed, how its colors relate, how its surface is handled, and how its shapes are organized. The critic does not ask what the painting depicts, what the artist intended, or what social conditions produced it. Formalism holds that the aesthetic value of a work resides in its formal properties and that these properties can be analyzed without reference to anything outside the work itself.
This entry covers what formalism is, how it developed from early 20th-century aesthetics to Greenberg's mid-century dominance, who its key proponents were, and how it has been challenged and revised.
Formalism begins with a distinction between form and content. Form refers to the visual and material properties of an artwork: line, color, shape, composition, texture, scale, surface. Content refers to what the artwork depicts or communicates: narrative, emotion, social commentary, political message. A formalist critic focuses on form and treats content as secondary or irrelevant to aesthetic judgment.
The central claim of formalism is that aesthetic value is determined by form. A painting is good not because it tells an important story or expresses a noble sentiment but because its colors, shapes, and composition are well-organized. This claim has a philosophical basis in Immanuel Kant's Critique of Judgment (1790), which argued that aesthetic judgment is disinterested: we judge beauty not by what the object does for us practically or morally but by the pleasure we take in its form. A 2024 book chapter published by Oxford University Press provided a philosophical reconstruction of Greenbergian theory, showing that Greenberg married a formalist conception of aesthetic judgment with a medium-specific theory of artistic development. The chapter argued that Greenberg's theory is more coherent than its critics have acknowledged when treated as a whole rather than dismissed on the basis of individual essays. A 2025 study published in the Bodrum Journal of Art and Design analyzed Greenberg's theory from multiple perspectives, tracing its origins, development, impact, and critiques. The study confirmed that Greenberg's formalist theory, shaped by concepts such as medium specificity, flatness, and historical progression, exerted a decisive influence on the perception of modern art and the formation of its canon. However, the study also found that the theory faced significant criticism for reductionism, historicism, and elitism due to its exclusion of content, context, and alternative artistic expressions. Origins and History
The term "formalism" in art criticism traces back to the British critic Clive Bell (1881-1964). In his 1914 book Art, Bell argued that all genuine art shares a single quality, which he called "significant form." Significant form is the combination of lines, colors, and shapes that produces aesthetic emotion in the viewer. Bell insisted that representational content is irrelevant. A painting of a Madonna and a painting of a tin of soup can both possess significant form, and a painting of a Madonna can lack it entirely. Bell's theory was designed to defend modern art, particularly Post-Impressionism and Cubism, against the charge that it was ugly or incompetent. If Cezanne's apples and Picasso's fractured faces produced aesthetic emotion through their form alone, then they were art regardless of what they depicted.
Bell's concept was influential but vague. He never defined significant form precisely, and critics objected that his theory was circular: significant form is whatever produces aesthetic emotion, and aesthetic emotion is what significant form produces. Despite this, Bell established the principle that form could be the primary criterion for aesthetic judgment, and this principle shaped formalism for the next century.
Roger Fry and the Post-Impressionist Exhibitions (1910-1912)
Roger Fry (1866-1934), Bell's contemporary and colleague, organized the First Post-Impressionist Exhibition at the Grafton Galleries in London in 1910. The exhibition introduced British audiences to Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Matisse. Fry's critical writings, particularly his essay "An Essay in Aesthetics" (1909), argued that the aesthetic response is a response to form, not to subject matter. Fry distinguished between the "actual" and the "ideated" life: actual life is practical and emotional, while ideated life is contemplative. Art belongs to the ideated life, and its form, not its content, is what engages contemplation. Fry's work provided the intellectual foundation for Bell's more polemical claims.
Greenberg (1909-1994) transformed formalism from a British aesthetic theory into an American critical institution. His key essays include "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" (1939), "Towards a Newer Laocoon" (1940), "Modernist Painting" (1960), and "After Abstract Expressionism" (1962). Greenberg's argument had three components.
First, he argued that each art medium should pursue what is unique to it. Painting should emphasize what painting can do that sculpture and literature cannot. For Greenberg, what was unique to painting was flatness and the manipulation of color on a two-dimensional surface. The history of modern painting was the history of painting discovering its medium specificity: Manet flattened the picture plane, the Impressionists emphasized color and brushwork, Cezanne abandoned linear perspective, and the Cubists fractured form. Each step was a step toward the medium's essence.
Second, he argued that this process was progressive. Art history moved in a single direction, from illusionism toward flatness, from content toward form. This was a teleological view: modernist painting was fulfilling a destiny that had been implicit since the Renaissance. A 2024 article published in The Sociological Review examined Greenberg's rise from artworld outsider to hegemonic dominance, analyzing the social conditions that enabled his standard-setting codes. The study positioned Greenberg as a "professional explicator" in Bourdieu's terms, communicating specialist standards of value to non-specialists. Read the study at Abertay University Research.
Third, he argued that aesthetic quality could be judged by the degree to which a work achieved medium specificity. Jackson Pollock's all-over drip paintings were the pinnacle of modernist painting because they maximized flatness and eliminated figuration. Greenberg championed Pollock, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and the Color Field painters because their work advanced the project he had defined.
Formalism began to crack in the 1960s. Pop Art reintroduced content and mass culture into painting. Minimalism challenged Greenberg's medium specificity by producing objects that were neither painting nor sculpture in any traditional sense. Conceptual Art declared that the idea was more important than the object. A 2025 article published in Selva Journal reexamined Greenberg's response to postmodernism, arguing that Greenberg's dismissal of postmodern art was based on a misrecognition: by Greenberg's own logic, postmodernism could be seen as a continuation of modernism by other means. Read the article at Selva Journal.
The most sustained critique came from the art historian T. J. Clark, who argued in "Clement Greenberg's Theory of Art" (1982) that Greenberg's formalism was not politically neutral but served to depoliticize art by stripping it of its social context. Clark, a social art historian, argued that modernist flatness was not a teleological destiny but a response to specific historical conditions, including the rise of mass culture and the threat of totalitarianism. Other critics, including Rosalind Krauss and Hal Foster, attacked formalism from poststructuralist and psychoanalytic perspectives, arguing that Greenberg's system was blind to gender, race, and institutional power.
Clive Bell (1881-1964)
Bell coined "significant form" in Art (1914), establishing the principle that form is the primary criterion for aesthetic judgment. His defense of Post-Impressionism at a time when it was widely ridiculed helped legitimize modern art in Britain. His theory was criticized for circularity and for its inability to distinguish between good and bad abstract art, but its influence on subsequent formalism was foundational.
Roger Fry (1866-1934)
Fry organized the Post-Impressionist exhibitions of 1910 and 1912 and wrote the critical essays that explained the new art to British audiences. His distinction between form and content, and his argument that aesthetic response is contemplative rather than practical, provided the intellectual framework for formalist criticism. Fry was also a practicing painter, and his understanding of technique informed his criticism.
Clement Greenberg (1909-1994)
Greenberg was the most influential art critic of the 20th century. His essays from the 1940s through the 1960s defined the terms by which modern art was understood in America. He championed Abstract Expressionism, particularly Pollock and the Color Field painters, and his critical standards shaped museum acquisitions, gallery programming, and art education. His 1961 collection Art and Culture solidified his position as the dominant interpreter of late modernism. Greenberg's influence declined in the 1970s as postmodern criticism challenged his assumptions, but his writings remain central to any discussion of formalism.
Michael Fried (born 1939)
Fried, a philosopher and art historian at Johns Hopkins University, extended Greenberg's formalism in "Art and Objecthood" (1967). Fried argued that Minimalist art was "theatrical" because it addressed itself to the viewer's bodily presence in the gallery, whereas true modernist painting absorbed the viewer in a state of "presentness." Fried's essay is one of the most controversial texts in modern art criticism. His distinction between absorption and theatricality has been applied to art from the 18th century to the present.
Jed Perl (born 1951)
Perl, an American critic, has continued the formalist tradition in his writing for The New Criterion and other publications. Perl defends the value of formal analysis against what he sees as the reductive tendencies of identity-based and politically driven criticism. His work represents a contemporary continuation of the formalist tradition, though without Greenberg's teleological claims about art history.
Greenberg's formalism can be applied to specific paintings to see how it works. Take Jackson Pollock's Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) (1950, Metropolitan Museum of Art). A formalist analysis focuses on the allover distribution of paint, the rhythmic variation of line thickness, the relationship between the black, brown, and white enamel on the unprimed canvas. It does not ask what the painting means or what Pollock was feeling. It asks whether the formal organization is successful. Greenberg would say it is, because the painting achieves maximum flatness, eliminates figuration, and makes the physical surface of the canvas the primary subject.
Compare this with Mark Rothko's No. 61 (Rust and Blue) (1953, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles). A formalist analysis examines the relationship between the two color fields, the softness of the edges, the way the colors appear to float or sink. The painting has no subject in the traditional sense. Its content is its form. This is why Greenberg championed Rothko: the work fulfilled the formalist criterion of medium specificity. You can read more about this movement in our entry on color field painting.
Now consider a painting that formalism struggles with: Diego Rivera's Man at the Crossroads (1934, destroyed). The mural depicts workers, capitalists, and political figures in a complex narrative scene. A formalist analysis can describe the composition, color, and spatial organization, but it cannot account for the painting's political content, its function as propaganda, or its destruction by the Rockefeller family. Formalism's exclusion of context means it cannot fully address works whose meaning depends on content. This limitation is what motivated the social art history of T. J. Clark and others.
Limitations and Criticisms
Formalism has been criticized from multiple directions. Social art historians argue that it strips art of its political and economic context, treating artworks as if they exist outside history. Feminist critics argue that formalism's focus on medium specificity excluded women artists whose work engaged with content, craft, or decorative traditions. Postcolonial critics argue that formalism's universalizing claims about aesthetic quality ignore the cultural specificity of art from non-Western traditions. Postmodern critics argue that formalism's teleological view of art history is false: art does not progress in a single direction toward flatness or abstraction.
Despite these criticisms, formalist analysis remains a valuable tool. The formal properties of an artwork are real and can be described precisely. A critic who ignores form is missing something that any viewer can see. The question is not whether form matters but whether it is the only thing that matters. Most contemporary critics would say no, while acknowledging that formal analysis is a necessary component of any serious engagement with art. You can read more about the alternative approaches in our entries on reception theory and semiotics.
Formalism is part of a network of approaches to art criticism and theory. Reception theory is the approach that formalism reacted against most directly, shifting focus from the artwork's internal structure to the viewer's response. Semiotics studies how signs and symbols communicate meaning in images, analyzing content that formalism deliberately ignores. Abstract Expressionism is the movement that Greenberg's formalism championed most forcefully. Composition is one of the formal elements that formalist criticism analyzes. Minimalism challenged formalism by testing the boundaries of medium specificity. For more on how to analyze what you see in a painting, read our post on how to read a painting, or explore our guide to color theory fundamentals.
Stand in front of a painting and try to describe it without referring to what it depicts. Name the colors. Describe the brushwork. Trace the major compositional lines. Identify the focal point and the areas of contrast. Assess the balance: is it symmetrical or asymmetrical? Is the surface flat or textured? Does the space recede or stay on the surface? This exercise will not give you the complete meaning of the painting, but it will sharpen your attention to the visual properties that every viewer responds to, whether they know it or not.
