In the Kimberley region of Western Australia, a Gija artist named Mabel Juli paints a moon and a star on a dark canvas. The image is simple: two circular forms, one white, one yellow, against a black ground. But the painting tells a story that stretches across thousands of years and hundreds of kilometers. The moon is Garn'giny, a man. The star is Wardal, his promised wife. Between them is a black-headed python, the mother-in-law who was not the right skin match for the moon. The story is a Dreaming narrative, a creation myth that explains the marriage rules of Gija society and the origins of the night sky. Juli learned it from her mother and father, who learned it from their parents, back through generations to the time when the Ancestral Beings walked the earth and shaped it into the landscape that exists today.
Dreamtime is the English term for the Aboriginal Australian concept of creation, in which Ancestral Beings emerged from the formless earth and traveled across it, shaping landscapes, creating species, and establishing the laws, ceremonies, and social structures that govern human life. The term was coined by the anthropologist Francis Gillen in the 1890s, based on the Arrernte word "Altyerre," which refers to a time outside ordinary time, a creative epoch that is both past and ongoing. Aboriginal people more commonly use the word "Dreaming" or refer to specific Dreamings by name: the Kangaroo Dreaming, the Rainbow Serpent Dreaming, the Seven Sisters Dreaming. The Dreaming is not a past event. It is a continuous reality that underlies the present, accessible through ceremony, song, and art.

The Dreamtime is not a mythology in the Western sense of a collection of stories about gods who lived long ago. It is an ontology, a way of understanding reality. In Aboriginal Australian cosmology, the Ancestral Beings did not merely create the world and then depart. They became the world. The hills, rivers, rocks, and animals are the transformed bodies of the Ancestors. The landscape is not a backdrop for human life. It is the Ancestors themselves, alive and present, requiring care and ceremony.
Each Aboriginal group has its own Dreamings, connected to specific places and passed down through kinship lines. A Dreaming is associated with a clan, a territory, and a set of responsibilities. The people who hold a Dreaming are responsible for maintaining the sites associated with it, performing the ceremonies that keep the Ancestor's power active, and passing the knowledge to the next generation. This is what Aboriginal people mean when they say they "hold" or "look after" Country. Country is not just land. It is a network of relationships between people, Ancestors, animals, plants, and places.
The Dreaming is transmitted through multiple media: song, dance, painting, carving, storytelling, and ritual. Songlines, also called Dreaming tracks, are paths across the landscape that follow the journeys of Ancestral Beings. Each segment of a songline is associated with a song that describes the Ancestor's actions at that place. By singing the songs in sequence, a knowledgeable person can navigate across hundreds of kilometers of country. A 2025 study published in Antiquity combined traditional knowledge with archaeological work to trace Songlines across 2,300 kilometers from Murujuga on the Indian Ocean to the eastern Simpson Desert, showing that rock art images in one region matched those in another, demonstrating the connectivity of Dreaming tracks across the continent. Aboriginal Australian rock art is the oldest continuous art tradition on earth. Some sites in the Kimberley and Arnhem Land have been painted continuously for tens of thousands of years, with new layers added over old. The art is not "art" in the Western sense. For many Aboriginal groups, there is no word for "art." The marks on rock are not human creations but the work of Ancestral Beings, spirits of deceased kin, and other entities that are continual presences in Country.
A 2025 study published in the Journal of Island and Coastal Archaeology examined 3,183 images from 65 rock art sites in Yanyuwa Sea Country in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The study found that Yanyuwa people understand rock art as ontologically distinct from Western notions of art. Images on rock are not the creation of humans but the work of Ancestral Beings. The foundation of Yanyuwa relationships to kin and Country is "yijan," an ancestral time of world creation (also known as Dreamtime) where Ancestral Beings created the landscape and seascape, including the rock art itself. A 2025 study published in Antiquity examined digital tracings, or "finger flutings," in Koonalda Cave in South Australia, which may be more than 30,000 years old. The authors argued that these undulating lines, made by fingers in the soft carbonate surfaces of cave walls, are not visually symbolic in the way figurative rock art is. Instead, they are performative acts of "spiritual propagation," ensuring the seasonal return of prized food or trade items. The repetitious nature of the markings is critical: there is no sense of an individual artist or "art for art's sake." The study emphasized that Indigenous Australians use expressions like "singing the country awake" or "rising up," and that digital tracings can be "woken up" to revivify meaning and connectedness. The contemporary Aboriginal art movement began in 1971 at Papunya, a government settlement 240 kilometers west of Alice Springs. A schoolteacher named Geoffrey Bardon encouraged the Aboriginal men at Papunya to paint their Dreaming stories on canvas. The men had been painting on bodies, shields, and the ground for ceremony, but had never used acrylic on canvas. The first painting, a Honey Ant Dreaming mural on the school wall, was followed by hundreds of canvas paintings that translated Dreaming narratives into a new medium.
The Papunya paintings used dots, circles, and lines to depict Dreaming stories. The dot technique served multiple purposes. It was consistent with traditional body painting and ground painting practices. It also obscured sacred details that should not be seen by the uninitiated. A painting could show the public version of a Dreaming while concealing the restricted knowledge that only initiated people are entitled to see. This dual function, public art and private knowledge, is a defining feature of contemporary Aboriginal painting.
The Papunya Tula Artists cooperative, founded in 1972, became the model for Aboriginal art centers across Australia. Artists including Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri (1932-2002), Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri (c. 1930-1984), and Kaapa Tjampitjinpa (c. 1920-1989) produced paintings that are now held in major museums worldwide. The movement transformed Aboriginal art from an anthropological curiosity into a recognized contemporary art practice.
A 2026 report by ABC News revealed that the Birrundudu collection, 810 drawings made by 16 Aboriginal stockmen in 1945, has been identified as a precursor to the Papunya movement. The drawings were created when anthropologists Catherine and Ronald Berndt asked Aboriginal stockmen at Birrundudu cattle station to record their stories and ceremonies on paper with crayons. The drawings sat in boxes for decades before being identified and connected to the descendants of the artists. The discovery pushes the timeline of Aboriginal contemporary art back 25 years before Papunya, showing that Aboriginal men were already translating Dreaming narratives into a new medium when given the materials. Clifford Possum was one of the founding artists of the Papunya Tula movement. His paintings, such as Warlugulong (1977, National Gallery of Australia), depict multiple Dreaming stories layered on a single canvas. Warlugulong tells the story of the Blue-Tongue Lizard Ancestor who caused a great fire, and the painting maps the fire's path across the landscape. Mabel Juli is a Gija artist from the Kimberley region who paints the Moon and Star Dreaming. Her paintings, with their minimal compositions of moon, star, and python against dark grounds, are among the most recognized works of contemporary Aboriginal art. Juli's paintings tell the story of Garn'giny (the moon) and Wardal (the star), a narrative that encodes the marriage rules of Gija society. Kngwarreye, an Anmatyerre woman from Utopia Station in the Northern Territory, began painting late in life and produced thousands of works in her final decade. Her paintings, such as Earth's Creation (1994), translate the Yam Dreaming and the seasonal cycles of her Country into abstract compositions of color and line. Kngwarreye's work challenges the distinction between Aboriginal art and contemporary abstract painting. Nadjamerrek was a Kunwinjku artist from Western Arnhem Land known for his rock art and bark paintings. He was a traditional owner and custodian who maintained rock art sites and painted in the X-ray style characteristic of the region, which shows the internal anatomy of animals alongside their external form. Nadjamerrek's work bridges the ancient rock art tradition and contemporary practice, demonstrating the continuity of Dreaming-based art across millennia.
Napangardi, a Warlpiri woman from Mina Mina in the Tanami Desert, is known for her finely detailed paintings of the Mina Mina Dreaming, a women's ceremonial site. Her paintings, such as Mina Mina (2007), use dense fields of white dots on black grounds to create shimmering surfaces that map the salt lake and the women's ceremonial tracks across the landscape. Napangardi's work demonstrates how Dreaming stories encode both topographic information and ceremonial knowledge.
When looking at a contemporary Aboriginal painting, remember that what you see is a map. The circles, dots, and lines represent places, paths, and features of Country. A circle may be a waterhole, a campsite, or a sacred site. A line may be a river, a sandhill, or an Ancestral Being's track. The painting is not abstract in the Western sense. It is a topographic and spiritual map, encoding relationships between places, Ancestors, and the people who hold the Dreaming.
Also remember that what you see is not everything. Many Aboriginal paintings deliberately obscure restricted knowledge. The dot technique, in particular, conceals sacred details beneath layers of public imagery. What appears to be an abstract pattern may contain information that only initiated members of the community can read. This is not deception. It is a system for managing access to knowledge, ensuring that sacred information is protected while public versions of the Dreaming can be shared.
Finally, remember that the painting is not the Dreaming itself. The Dreaming is the landscape, the ceremony, the song, and the law. The painting is one expression of it, created for a specific purpose: to teach, to remember, to maintain, or, in the contemporary art market, to share and to sustain.
