On May 9, 2026, the 61st Venice Biennale opened to the public under the title In Minor Keys, curated by Koyo Kouoh, who died in May 2025 before the exhibition she conceived could be realized. La Biennale di Venezia decided to carry out her project as she had designed it, preserving the curatorial framework, the artist selections, and the theoretical architecture she had put in place. The exhibition featured 110 invited participants from across the globe and 100 national participations, with seven countries appearing for the first time: the Republic of Guinea, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, the Republic of Nauru, Qatar, the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Federal Republic of Somalia, and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. By the time it closes on November 22, 2026, more than 800,000 people will likely have walked through the Giardini and the Arsenale. The Venice Biennale has been called the Olympics of the art world, and the comparison is not idle. It is the largest, oldest, and most influential recurring art exhibition on the planet.
A biennale is a large-scale international art exhibition held every two years. The word comes from the Italian "biennale," meaning "every two years," and it refers to the recurring schedule that defines the format. The Venice Biennale, founded in 1895, was the first, and it established the model that has since been copied, adapted, and contested in over 200 cities worldwide. A biennale is not a commercial art fair where galleries sell work from booths. It is a curated exhibition, organized by an artistic director who selects artists, develops a thematic framework, and presents work in a way that is meant to reflect the current state of contemporary art.

The Venice Biennale, as the prototype, established the three-part structure that most biennales still follow. First, there is a central international exhibition organized by an artistic director in a main venue. At Venice, this occupies the Central Pavilion in the Giardini and the Corderie and Artiglierie buildings in the Arsenale, the former shipyard of the Venetian Republic. Second, there are national pavilions, where individual countries present their own selected artists. At Venice, 29 countries have permanent pavilions in the Giardini, 25 in the Arsenale, and 46 in rented spaces across the city. Third, there are collateral events, independently organized but officially approved exhibitions that take place throughout the host city.
The artistic director is the intellectual engine of the biennale. They develop the theme, select the artists, shape the exhibition design, and write or commission the curatorial texts that frame the show. The director's vision determines whether the biennale feels like a coherent argument about contemporary art or a disconnected survey of whatever happened to be available. At Venice, the director is appointed by the Biennale's board and typically has 18 to 24 months to develop the exhibition.
The Venice Biennale was established on April 19, 1893, when the Venice city government passed a resolution to create a national biennial exhibition of art to honor the silver anniversary of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Italy. The first Biennale opened on April 30, 1895, with King Umberto and Queen Margherita in attendance. It presented 516 works: 188 by Italian artists and the rest by artists from 14 other nations. Approximately 225,000 people attended, establishing the Biennale as a major source of tourism and commerce for Venice.
The Biennale's schedule has been interrupted twice by world wars. The 1916 and 1918 editions were canceled due to World War I. The 1944 and 1946 editions were canceled due to World War II. In 1974, the Biennale was dedicated to solidarity with Chile following the 1973 coup that brought Augusto Pinochet to power, and no official edition number was assigned. Numbering resumed with the 37th edition in 1976. The COVID-19 pandemic postponed the 2021 edition to 2022, which is why the 2026 edition is the 61st rather than the 62nd.
The national pavilion system, which is unique to Venice, began in 1907 when Belgium built the first permanent national pavilion in the Giardini. Other countries followed, and the Giardini became a kind of architectural atlas of national self-presentation, with pavilions designed by prominent architects from each country. The system has been criticized for reinforcing national boundaries in an art world that increasingly values transnational practice, but it has also given countries without major art infrastructures a visible platform on the global stage.
The Venice Biennale had no serious imitators for most of the 20th century. The Sao Paulo Biennial, founded in 1951, was the second major biennial, and it followed Venice's national pavilion model. But the real explosion came after 1989, when the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War opened new cultural territories. Between 1990 and 2020, over 150 biennales were established worldwide, from the Istanbul Biennial (1987) to the Sharjah Biennial (1993), the Dakar Biennale (1992), the Berlin Biennale (1996), the Shanghai Biennale (1996), the Liverpool Biennial (1999), the Moscow Biennale (2005), the Singapore Biennale (2006), and the New Orleans Biennial (2008).
Each biennale reflects its local context. The Dakar Biennale, known as Dak'Art, focuses on contemporary African art and has become the most important platform for African artists on the continent. The Sharjah Biennial, directed since 2003 by Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, has built a reputation for rigorous curatorial practice and engagement with artists from the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa. The Berlin Biennial, originally curated by Klaus Biesenbach and later by figures including Adam Budak and Cathrine David, has positioned itself as a politically engaged exhibition that responds to the specific conditions of Berlin as a post-wall, post-reunification city.
The proliferation of biennales has produced what scholars call "biennialization," a condition in which the biennale format has become the default structure for large-scale international art presentation. Critics argue that biennialization homogenizes contemporary art, producing a recognizable "biennale aesthetic" of installation, video, and socially engaged practice that travels well between cities but loses local specificity. Defenders argue that biennales provide infrastructure for artists who lack gallery representation and create opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue that commercial art markets do not support.
The 61st Venice Biennale, titled In Minor Keys, was curated by Koyo Kouoh, a Cameroonian-born curator who was the executive director and chief curator of RAW Material Company, a contemporary art institution in Dakar, Senegal. Kouoh was appointed artistic director of the Biennale's Visual Arts Department in November 2024. She developed the curatorial project, selected the artists, designated the catalog authors, and designed the exhibition architecture before her death in May 2025. La Biennale, with the support of Kouoh's family, decided to carry out the exhibition as she had conceived it.
The title In Minor Keys was chosen by Kouoh to suggest a curatorial approach that values modesty, intimacy, and the human scale over spectacle. According to the Biennale's official description, the exhibition is "permeated with spirit, with a sacredness that puts the person, the human being, back at the heart of things." The 110 invited participants include individual artists, collaborative duos, collectives, and artist-led organizations, selected with attention to "resonances, affinity, and possible convergences between practices, even when far apart." Kouoh's team, based in London, Dakar, Berlin, Beirut, Marseille, Cape Town, and New York, worked remotely and through in-person seminars in Venice and Dakar to produce the exhibition.
The 2026 edition also introduced seven first-time national participants, reflecting the Biennale's continued expansion beyond its European origins. The absence of Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement, which Kouoh did not have time to determine before her death, is a reminder that the Biennale is not just an exhibition but an institution shaped by the people who run it and the time they are given.
Szeemann, a Swiss curator, transformed the biennale format with his 1972 Documenta 5 in Kassel, Germany, which he titled "Questioning Reality: Image Worlds Today." While Documenta is technically a quinquennial (every five years), Szeemann's curatorial approach influenced every subsequent biennale. He expanded the definition of what could be included in an art exhibition, incorporating advertising, science fiction, and everyday objects. His approach to the Venice Biennale's Aperto section in 1980, which he co-curated with Achille Bonito Oliva, introduced a platform for younger artists that ran alongside the national pavilions.
Enwezor, a Nigerian-born curator, was the first African to direct the Venice Biennale. His 2015 edition, titled All the World's Futures, was a politically charged exhibition that included a live reading of Karl Marx's Capital in the Arsenale. Enwezor's biennale was a turning point in the institution's history, shifting its center of gravity from Europe to the Global South and establishing that the Biennale could be a site of explicit political engagement rather than neutral survey.
Alemani, an Italian curator based in New York, directed the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, titled The Milk of Dreams. The exhibition was notable for its focus on women and non-binary artists, with over 90% of the central exhibition's artists identifying as female or non-binary. Alemani's biennale was the first to openly address the gender imbalance that had characterized the Biennale for most of its history, and it prompted a broader reckoning across the art world about representation in major exhibitions.
Kouoh's posthumous 2026 biennale, In Minor Keys, represents a curatorial vision that prioritized what she called "the human dimension, the benchmark of everything." As the founder of RAW Material Company in Dakar and a curator who worked extensively with African and diasporic artists, Kouoh brought to Venice a perspective shaped by the Global South. Her death before the exhibition opened gave the 2026 Biennale a particular weight: it is both a celebration of her curatorial intelligence and a memorial to a voice the art world lost too soon.
The biennale is connected to the broader infrastructure of the art world. It is distinct from the art fair, which is a commercial event where galleries sell work, though the two often overlap in timing and audience. The Paris Salon was the precursor to the biennale format, establishing the idea of a recurring, large-scale public exhibition. Museums provide the institutional infrastructure that biennales rely on, lending works, hosting collateral events, and employing curators who move between biennale and museum roles. The best time to visit is during the opening week in May, when the art world converges and the city fills with curators, critics, and artists, or in the quieter summer months when you can spend hours in the Arsenale without crowds.
