If you squeeze a tube of oil paint, what comes out is not just color. It is a complex mixture of pigment particles suspended in a liquid that does several things at once: it carries the pigment, it binds the pigment to the surface, and it determines how the paint flows, how it dries, and what it looks like when it is dry. That liquid is called the vehicle, and it is the single most important factor in determining what kind of paint you are working with. Change the vehicle, and you change the paint entirely. The same cadmium red pigment in linseed oil makes oil paint. In gum arabic it makes watercolor. In acrylic polymer it makes acrylic paint. The pigment is the same. The vehicle is what makes them different materials.
In painting, the vehicle is the liquid to which pigments are added to make paint, so called because it "carries" the color. The vehicle consists of two parts: a non-volatile part that forms the dried film and is also called the binder, and a volatile part called the solvent that dissolves or suspends the binder and adjusts the viscosity of the mixture. In oil paint, the vehicle is linseed oil, which serves as both binder and vehicle. In watercolor, the vehicle is water plus gum arabic, where the water is the solvent and the gum arabic is the binder. What Is a Vehicle and How Does It Work?
Ralph Mayer, in his Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques, describes paint as pigment plus vehicle. The vehicle is the entire liquid contents of a paint. It is the substance that carries the pigment, binds it together, and causes it to adhere to a surface. When paint is manufactured, pigment is combined with the vehicle in a process called dispersal, which breaks up clusters and clumps so each pigment particle is separately surrounded by the vehicle.
The vehicle has two components. The non-volatile part is the binder, the material that remains in the dried paint film and holds the pigment particles together and to the surface. The volatile part is the solvent, the liquid that makes the paint workable and evaporates as the paint dries. In oil paint, linseed oil is both the binder and the vehicle, because it does not evaporate but instead dries by oxidation. In acrylic paint, the vehicle is an acrylic dispersion base containing acrylic microparticles, water, dispersants, glycols, and other components. The water evaporates, and the acrylic particles fuse into a continuous film. In watercolor, the vehicle is water (the solvent) plus gum arabic (the binder). The water evaporates, leaving the gum arabic to hold the pigment on the paper.
The Blick Art Materials guide to what paint is explains this distinction clearly: "A paint vehicle, sometimes called a 'base,' spreads and flows, and contributes to paint body, workability, and other physical characteristics." The vehicle is what you feel when you brush the paint onto the surface. Its viscosity, its tackiness, its drying time, and its surface quality when dry are all determined by the vehicle.
Vehicle vs. Binder vs. Medium
The terms vehicle, binder, and medium are often used interchangeably, which causes confusion. In strict technical usage, they refer to different things.
The binder is the non-volatile component of the vehicle. It is the material that forms the dried film and adheres the pigment to the surface. Linseed oil is the binder in oil paint. The vehicle is the entire liquid portion of the paint, including both the binder and the solvent. In oil paint, the vehicle is linseed oil (which is also the binder). In watercolor, the vehicle is water plus gum arabic. The vehicle is broader than the binder.
The medium is the most ambiguous term. In its broadest sense, "medium" refers to the material an artist works in: oil, watercolor, acrylic, tempera. In a narrower technical sense, medium refers to the binder or vehicle. In studio practice, medium most often refers to a material added to an already constituted paint to alter its handling, appearance, or drying behavior. An artist who adds linseed oil to oil paint to make it more fluid is adding a medium. The overlap between these meanings is why the term remains useful but persistently ambiguous. Vehicles in Different Types of Paint
The vehicle is what defines the type of paint. Here are the vehicles used in the most common painting media:
Oil Paint
The vehicle is a drying oil, most commonly linseed oil. Linseed oil is both the vehicle and the binder. It does not evaporate. Instead, it dries by oxidation and polymerization, reacting with atmospheric oxygen to form a solid, durable film. This process is slow, taking days to weeks depending on the thickness of the paint and the environmental conditions. Watercolor
The vehicle is water plus gum arabic. Gum arabic, a natural gum from the acacia tree, is the binder. Water is the solvent. When the water evaporates, the gum arabic holds the pigment on the paper surface. Gouache

Egg Tempera
The vehicle is egg yolk, which is an emulsion of water and oil. The egg yolk serves as both vehicle and binder. The water in the yolk evaporates, and the proteins and lipids in the yolk form a durable, water-resistant film. Tempera dries quickly and cannot be reactivated with water once dry. Acrylic Paint
The vehicle is an acrylic polymer dispersion. The dispersion contains acrylic microparticles suspended in water, along with dispersants, glycols, and other additives. When the water evaporates, the acrylic particles coalesce into a continuous, flexible, water-resistant film. Acrylic paint dries quickly (minutes to hours) and cannot be reactivated once dry. Encaustic
The vehicle is beeswax or another wax, melted and applied hot. The wax is both vehicle and binder. It cools and hardens on the surface, creating a durable, luminous film. Encaustic paint must be heated for application and cannot be worked at room temperature. See our entry on encaustic for details.
Fresco
In fresco, the vehicle is water, and the binder is the lime plaster itself. The pigment is applied to wet plaster, and as the plaster cures, the pigment becomes chemically bound into the calcium carbonate surface. Why the Vehicle Matters
The vehicle determines the working properties of the paint: how it flows, how it blends, how fast it dries, whether it can be reactivated, and what surface quality it produces when dry. Oil paint stays workable for days, allowing for blending and reworking. Watercolor dries in minutes and can be reactivated, allowing for layering and lifting. Acrylic dries in minutes and cannot be reactivated, requiring fast work or the use of retarder mediums. Egg tempera dries almost instantly and is built up in many thin layers of cross-hatched strokes.
The vehicle also determines the aging behavior of the paint. Oil paint yellows and becomes more transparent over decades as the linseed oil ages. Acrylic paint is more stable but can become brittle over very long periods. The vehicle affects conservation decisions: a water-soluble vehicle like gum arabic can be damaged by water exposure, while an oil vehicle is water-resistant but sensitive to solvents.
Joe Singer, writing in How to Paint Portraits in Pastel, noted that "it is often the binder and not the pigment that is the main cause for the deterioration of paintings, especially oil." This is because the vehicle, not the pigment, is the component that ages, yellows, cracks, and breaks down. The pigment itself, if it is a stable inorganic compound, may remain unchanged for centuries while the vehicle around it deteriorates.

You can see the effect of different vehicles by comparing paintings in different media in any major museum. The slow-drying, blendable quality of oil paint is visible in the seamless transitions of light and shadow in a Rembrandt at the Rijksmuseum. The quick-drying, luminous transparency of egg tempera is visible in the crisp, precise surfaces of Italian Renaissance altarpieces at the National Gallery in London. The water-soluble, reactivatable quality of watercolor is visible in the layered washes of a Turner at the Tate. The same pigments appear in all of these paintings, but the vehicle makes each one a fundamentally different material.
