Pink is not a color. It is a tint. Take red, the most saturated color most painters can produce, and add white. The red becomes lighter, softer, less intense. Add enough white and you have pink. Pink is red with white in it, and the amount of white determines whether you get a deep rose, a warm blush, or a barely-there pastel. This is the definition of a tint: a hue mixed with white. It is one of the three fundamental ways artists modify a pure color, alongside shades (hue plus black) and tones (hue plus gray).
A tint is created by adding white to any pure hue. The more white you add, the lighter and softer the color becomes. Tints increase value (lightness) while reducing saturation (intensity). The hue itself does not change. A tint of red is still red. It is just a lighter, less intense version of red. In everyday language, many tints have their own names: pink (tint of red), sky blue (tint of blue), lavender (tint of violet), peach (tint of orange).

In color theory, a tint is a mixture of a pure hue with white. The white raises the value of the color, making it lighter. At the same time, the white reduces the saturation, making the color less intense. A fully saturated red at medium value becomes a light, soft pink when white is added. The more white, the lighter and less saturated the tint.
Tints are sometimes called pastel colors, especially when the proportion of white is high. Pastel tints share a soft, light quality that feels airy, gentle, and calm. They are associated with spring, youth, and optimism in Western visual culture. But tints are not limited to pastel ranges. A tint with a small amount of white is still a tint, even if it retains much of the original hue's intensity.
The Munsell Color System, developed by Albert Henry Munsell in 1905, places tints along the vertical axis of the color solid. The top of the axis is white, the bottom is black, and the pure hue sits at a specific value level in between. Moving upward from the pure hue toward white produces tints. Moving downward produces shades. The Munsell system provides a precise, standardized way to describe any tint in terms of its hue, value, and chroma.
One technical note: adding white to a color can cause a slight hue shift. This is called the Abney effect, named after the British photographer and physicist William de Wiveleslie Abney, who documented it in 1910. When white is added to a hue, the perceived hue shifts slightly. Red added to white shifts toward blue, making pink appear slightly cooler than the original red. Yellow added to white shifts toward green. Painters correct for this by adding a small amount of the adjacent hue to bring the tint back in line with the parent color. For example, adding a small amount of orange to a mixture of red and white corrects the shift toward blue, keeping the pink warm.
Renaissance painters used tints systematically to model form. The transition from highlight to mid-tone to shadow on a three-dimensional object is, in part, a transition from tint to pure hue to shade. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) used subtle tints in the highlights of Mona Lisa (c. 1503-1519), building the face from layers of translucent color that shift from light tints in the highlights to darker tones in the shadows. The sfumato technique, for which Leonardo is famous, depends on the ability to create infinitesimally small transitions between tints and shades.
Raphael (1483-1520) used tints for flesh tones in The School of Athens (1509-1511) and his many Madonnas. Renaissance flesh is built from tints of red, yellow, and orange, layered over a greenish underpainting called verdaccio. The tints create the luminosity of skin, which is translucent and lit from within. Without tints, Renaissance flesh would look like painted clay rather than living tissue.
The Rococo period (c. 1700-1780) made tints the dominant aesthetic. Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) used pastel tints of pink, blue, and cream in The Swing (1767). The painting is a festival of tints, with the pink dress, the green foliage, and the blue sky all lightened with white to create an atmosphere of aristocratic leisure and frivolity. The Rococo palette is the most tint-heavy palette in Western art history.
The Impressionists used tints to capture the effect of outdoor light. Claude Monet (1840-1926) used high-key tints, colors lightened with white, to paint the bright, sunlit surfaces of his Haystacks series (1890-1891). The Rouen Cathedral series (1892-1894) uses tints to show the facade glowing in morning light. Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) used high-key tints to create shimmering, pastel-like surfaces that dissolve the distinction between figure and ground.
James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) used tints in his Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl (1862) to create a painting built almost entirely from tints of white, cream, and pale yellow. The painting demonstrates that tints, used with sufficient control, can be the entire palette. Whistler's nocturnes also use tints, but darker ones, where the white is mixed with small amounts of color to create the pale, luminous effects of moonlight on water.
The 20th century used tints for both abstraction and emotional effect. Mark Rothko (1903-1970) used tints in his color-field paintings, lightening his hues with white to create the soft, glowing edges of his floating rectangles. Orange and Yellow (1956) uses a tint of orange against a tint of yellow, creating a luminous, atmospheric effect. Agnes Martin (1912-2004) used pale tints in her grid paintings, creating surfaces so subtle that the color is barely perceptible, functioning as atmosphere rather than hue.
Leonardo's Mona Lisa (c. 1503-1519) uses tints in the highlights to create the sfumato effect. The face is built from infinitesimally small transitions between tints and shades, with no hard edges. Leonardo wrote, "See that your shadows and lights blend like smoke without strokes or borders." The tints are what make the face feel alive and three-dimensional.
Fragonard's The Swing (1767) is the quintessential Rococo tint painting. The pink dress, the cream sky, and the pale green foliage are all tints, lightened with white to create an atmosphere of lightness and frivolity. The painting demonstrates how a palette dominated by tints produces a feeling of pleasure and ease.
Monet's Haystacks series (1890-1891) uses high-key tints to capture the effect of bright sunlight. The Rouen Cathedral series (1892-1894) uses tints to show the facade glowing in morning and evening light. Monet proved that tints are not just soft or pretty. They are the colors of light itself, and painting them accurately requires as much observation and skill as painting the darkest shadows.
Whistler's Symphony in White, No. 1 (1862) is built almost entirely from tints of white and pale color. The painting demonstrates that a restricted palette of tints can create a complete composition with its own emotional character. Whistler's nocturnes use darker tints, where small amounts of color are mixed into white to create the pale, luminous effects of moonlight.
Martin's grid paintings, such as Untitled (1963), use pale tints so subtle that the color is barely perceptible. The tints function as atmosphere rather than hue, creating a meditative, almost immaterial surface. Martin demonstrated that tints, pushed to their extreme, can dissolve the boundary between color and light.
To mix a tint, add white to a pure hue. Start with a small amount of white and increase gradually. The more white you add, the lighter and less saturated the tint becomes. Test the tint on a white surface to see how it reads against white, because tints can disappear against a white background.
Be aware of the Abney effect. When you add white to a hue, the perceived hue may shift slightly. Red shifts toward blue, making pink appear cooler than the original red. To correct this, add a small amount of the adjacent warm hue. For red, add a touch of orange. For yellow, add a touch of red. This correction keeps the tint in line with the parent hue.
Tints have specific uses in composition. They create a sense of light, air, and space. They feel optimistic, calm, and approachable. They are useful for highlights, for backgrounds that need to recede, and for creating a high-key palette that feels bright and open. A painting built primarily from tints feels airy and luminous. A painting with tints used only in highlights feels dramatic, with the tints drawing attention to the areas where light hits the subject.
Tints also reduce saturation, which means they desaturate the palette. A painting that uses too many tints can feel washed out or insipid. The solution is to balance tints with pure hues or shades. The contrast between a tint and a shade of the same hue creates a strong value contrast that can serve as the structural backbone of a composition.
Tints are one of three ways to modify a pure hue, alongside shades (hue plus black) and tones (hue plus gray). Color is the broader element that tints belong to. Value is the dimension that tints increase. Saturation is the dimension that tints decrease. Hue is the name of the color that is being tinted. Warm colors and cool colors can both be tinted. Choose a pure hue and create a tint scale. Start with the pure hue at full saturation. Add a small amount of white and paint a swatch. Add more white and paint another. Continue until you reach pure white. You should have a gradient from the pure hue through progressively lighter tints to white. Repeat this exercise with a warm hue and a cool hue. The exercise teaches two things: how tints reduce saturation while increasing value, and how the Abney effect shifts the hue as white is added.
