Hyperrealism: Painting and Sculpture More Realistic Than Reality

Walk into a gallery containing a Ron Mueck sculpture and your first instinct is to apologize. A naked, elderly woman lies on a bed, her skin translucent, every vein visible, every wrinkle mapped. Origins and History

Hyperrealism has its roots in the photorealist movement of the late 1960s. The American painter Denis Peterson, whose early works are considered an offshoot of photorealism, first used the term "hyperrealism" to describe the new movement and its splinter group of artists. Ron Mueck (b. 1958)

Mueck is the most celebrated contemporary hyperrealist sculptor. An Australian who began his career making models for television and film, Mueck produces sculptures of human figures at scales that are never life-sized. Dead Dad (1996-1997) is a sculpture of his deceased father at one-third scale, lying on his back, every detail of the skin and hair precisely rendered. Pregnant Woman (2002, National Gallery of Australia) is a five-meter-tall sculpture of a pregnant woman. The scale shifts are what make Mueck's work so unsettling. Contemporary hyperrealism has been transformed by digital photography.
