In 1884, a French civil servant named Joris-Karl Huysmans published a novel called À rebours, translated as Against Nature or Against the Grain. It tells the story of Duc Jean des Esseintes, a decrepit aristocrat who withdraws from Parisian society to a remote house, where he fills his rooms with exotic flowers, rare books, jeweled tortoises, and paintings by Gustave Moreau. At one point, des Esseintes declares: "There is not one of her inventions, no matter how subtle or imposing it may be, which human genius cannot create. The moment has come to replace her by artifice." "Her" means Nature. The novel had no plot. It was a catalog of sensations, objects, and aesthetic obsessions. When it appeared, the critic Paul Bourget called it "a book of the decadence." The label stuck, and the Decadent Movement had its bible.

What Was the Decadent Movement?
Decadence was less a visual style than a set of attitudes. The Decadents believed that civilization was in decline, that modern industrial society was ugly and philistine, and that the only refuge from this degradation was art. But not art that depicted the world. Art that replaced the world. Artifice was their god. They prized the made, the crafted, the artificial over anything that grew organically or existed in nature.
In literature, this meant prose style that was ornate, dense, and self-consciously refined. Théophile Gautier, writing in his 1869 preface to Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal, described decadent style as "an ingenious style, complex, wise, full of nuances and refinements, forever extending the limits of language." He compared it to "a language that has become marbled with a greenish tinge of decomposition, like the spoiled hanging meat of the late Roman empire." This was meant as praise. The comparison to late Rome was not accidental. The Decadents saw themselves as the last refined artists of a dying civilization, like the Roman poets of the fifth century.
In visual art, Decadence overlapped heavily with Symbolism. Both movements rejected realism and naturalism. Both preferred dream, myth, and fantasy over observation. The distinction is that Symbolism used natural imagery as a vehicle for spiritual or mystical meaning, while Decadence actively disparaged nature. Historical Context and Origins
The Decadent Movement emerged from a specific set of historical conditions. France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 humiliated the nation and shattered the optimism of the Second Empire. The Paris Commune and its violent suppression in 1871 added to the sense that French society was fraying. Birthrates were declining. Suicide rates were rising. Syphilis was spreading. The literature of degeneration, most notably Max Nordau's Entartung (1892, Degeneration), argued that modern artists were physically and mentally damaged by urban life.
The Decadents took this diagnosis and turned it into a badge of honor. If civilization was declining, then the appropriate response was not reform but refinement. The Decadent artist would cultivate the most exquisite sensations available to a dying culture, like a connoisseur sampling the last bottles from a burning wine cellar. This attitude drew on Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), whose Les Fleurs du mal (1857) found beauty in corruption, disease, and urban squalor. Baudelaire was the movement's patron saint. The movement was named and theorized in France. Anatole Baju founded the magazine Le Décadent in 1886, giving the movement its public identity. In Britain, the Decadent Movement arrived through the influence of Walter Pater and the Aesthetic Movement, which shared the Decadents' commitment to art for art's sake. Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907)
Huysmans was not a visual artist, but À rebours (1884) shaped the Decadent visual arts more than any painting. The novel's protagonist, des Esseintes, fills his house with the paintings of Gustave Moreau, the lithographs of Odilon Redon, and the engravings of Jan Luyken. Huysmans used des Esseintes's collection to define what Decadent art looked like: works that were "divorced from modern times and modern society," that transported the viewer "to some unfamiliar world." The novel was so influential that it became a shopping list for Decadent taste.
Gustave Moreau (1826-1898)
Moreau was the painter most closely associated with Decadence. His The Apparition (1876) shows Salome floating before a vision of John the Baptist's severed head, surrounded by jeweled architecture and hallucinatory detail. Huysmans devoted an entire chapter of À rebours to Moreau's paintings of Salome, describing them as "the symbolic deity of indestructible lust, the goddess of immortal Hysteria, of accursed Beauty." Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898)
Beardsley was the greatest visual artist of British Decadence. His illustrations for Oscar Wilde's play Salomé (1894) are the visual equivalent of Huysmans's prose: dense, ornate, erotic, and grotesque. Beardsley drew in flat black-and-white lines, drawing on Japanese prints and Rococo ornament. His illustrations for Lysistrata (1896) and his designs for The Yellow Book magazine defined the look of the 1890s. He died of tuberculosis at 25.
Félicien Rops (1833-1898)
Rops was a Belgian artist whose etchings and drawings combined eroticism with the macabre. His Pornokratès (1878) shows a blindfolded woman led by a pig on a leash, an image of sexuality dominating reason. Rops illustrated Baudelaire and worked closely with Decadent writers. His work is the visual embodiment of Decadence's fascination with the intersection of sex, death, and artifice.
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) is the Decadent novel in English. Its protagonist remains young while his portrait ages and corrupts, a literal embodiment of Decadence's obsession with beauty, decay, and the double. Wilde's essays, particularly "The Decay of Lying" (1889), argued that art should not imitate nature but improve on it. "Nature is no great mother who has borne us," he wrote. "She is our creation."
Decadent Visual Art
Decadent painting is difficult to separate from Symbolism, and many scholars treat them as overlapping movements. Moreau's Jupiter and Semele (1895) is a massive canvas filled with overlapping figures, floral patterns, and cosmic imagery. It is the opposite of Impressionist plein air observation. It was painted entirely in the studio from imagination and art-historical reference. The painting took Moreau years to complete, and it remained unfinished at his death.
Odilon Redon's The Eye Like a Strange Balloon Mounts Toward Infinity (1882) is a lithograph showing a disembodied eye floating in a cloud. Redon called his black-and-white works "noirs" and described them as exploring "the suggestiveness of the undefinable." Redon was championed by Huysmans in À rebours, and his work exemplifies the Decadent preference for dream over observation.
Fernand Khnopff's I Lock My Door Upon Myself (1891) shows a woman in a blue robe seated in a room with a bust of Hypnos and a framed image of a town. The painting is about withdrawal, solitude, and interior life. Khnopff was a Belgian Symbolist whose work embodies the Decadent retreat from the social world into private obsession.
Legacy and Influence
The Decadent Movement was short-lived, but its influence was long.
