In 1992, a 27-year-old artist put a 14-foot tiger shark in a glass tank of formaldehyde and exhibited it at the Saatchi Gallery in London. He titled it The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living. The shark had been caught by a fisherman in Australia and shipped to London in a refrigerated container. The artist, Damien Hirst, had been out of art school for four years. Charles Saatchi, the advertising magnate and collector, paid 50,000 pounds for it. The shark became the most talked-about artwork of the 1990s. It was disgusting, fascinating, and impossible to ignore. It smelled. The formaldehyde yellowed over time, and the shark's skin wrinkled. Hirst eventually replaced the original shark with a new one in 2006, a fact he disclosed openly. The question of whether the replacement was the same artwork became a subject of philosophical debate. The shark was the emblem of the Young British Artists, a loose group of artists who used shock, spectacle, and entrepreneurial flair to make London the center of the contemporary art world in the 1990s.
The Young British Artists, or YBAs, are a loose group of British artists who began exhibiting together in 1988 and came to prominence in the 1990s. The label was applied by the art and popular media to describe a generation of artists who shared an openness to materials and processes, a willingness to use shock tactics, and an entrepreneurial attitude toward their careers. The group had no manifesto and no formal membership. The core figures include Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Gary Hume, Michael Landy, Marc Quinn, and the Chapman brothers. The YBAs transformed the British art scene, made contemporary art a subject of tabloid newspaper coverage, and produced some of the most controversial and most expensive artworks of the late 20th century.
This entry covers who the YBAs were, how they emerged from London art schools and a single student exhibition, which artists defined the group, and how a generation that built its reputation on controversy has been reassessed as it enters middle age.
What Were the Young British Artists?
The YBAs were not a movement in the traditional sense. They had no manifesto, no shared style, and no formal organization. What united them was a set of attitudes: an openness to unconventional materials (dead animals, beds, cigarettes, frozen blood), a willingness to provoke and offend, and a direct, entrepreneurial approach to getting their work seen. Unlike previous generations of artists who waited for galleries to discover them, the YBAs organized their own exhibitions, courted the media, and built relationships with collectors directly.
The label "Young British Artists" was first used by the Saatchi Gallery in the early 1990s. Charles Saatchi, who had made his fortune in advertising with Saatchi and Saatchi, began collecting the work of these young artists aggressively and exhibiting them at his gallery in St John's Wood. The Saatchi Gallery's 1992 exhibition of Hirst's shark brought the YBAs to public attention. The 1997 exhibition Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection at the Royal Academy of Arts in London made them international news. The exhibition included Hirst's shark, Emin's Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995 (a tent embroidered with the names of everyone the artist had shared a bed with), and Marcus Harvey's Myra, a large portrait of the child murderer Myra Hindley made from children's handprints. The exhibition drew 300,000 visitors in London and traveled to Berlin and New York, where it provoked protests and an attempted lawsuit.
The label YBA was always reductive. The artists grouped under it had widely different practices. But the label stuck because it captured something real about the moment: a generation of British artists who emerged together, were promoted together, and defined a decade of British art together. A 2026 exhibition at the KYOCERA Museum of Art in Kyoto, YBA and Beyond, explores the dynamic evolution of British art from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, featuring around 90 works by approximately 50 artists. The exhibition traces how the Thatcher era's charged social climate gave rise to a new generation who challenged traditional norms and embraced bold, experimental practices. Historical Context and Origins
The YBAs emerged from the London art school system in the late 1980s. The key institution was Goldsmiths College (now Goldsmiths, University of London), where the artist Michael Craig-Martin taught a generation of students who would become the core of the YBA group. Craig-Martin encouraged his students to think about art conceptually, to use any material, and to disregard the traditional distinctions between painting, sculpture, and installation.
The founding event was the Freeze exhibition in July 1988, organized by Damien Hirst while he was still a second-year student at Goldsmiths. Hirst invited 16 fellow students to show their work in a vacant London Docklands Development Corporation building at Surrey Docks. The exhibition was self-organized, self-funded, and self-promoted. The students sent invitations to collectors, critics, and gallery owners. Charles Saatchi visited, as did the gallerist Karsten Schubert and the critic Norman Rosenthal. Freeze is now considered the launching point of the YBA phenomenon, though at the time it received little press attention.
The political context was the Thatcher era (1979-1990). Margaret Thatcher's government had cut funding for arts education and cultural institutions, creating a climate in which young artists had to be entrepreneurial to survive. The YBAs' self-organizing approach was partly a response to the lack of institutional support. At the same time, the Thatcher years produced a culture of conspicuous consumption and free-market individualism that the YBAs both reflected and critiqued. The relationship between YBA art and Thatcherite values is ambiguous: the YBAs were products of the same culture of spectacle and entrepreneurship that Thatcher promoted, even when their work seemed to critique it.
Key Artists and Pioneers
Damien Hirst (born 1965)
Hirst is the central figure of the YBAs and the wealthiest artist of his generation. He organized Freeze as a student and has been the most prominent YBA throughout his career. His The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991, original shark replaced 2006) is the group's signature work. His For the Love of God (2007) is a platinum cast of a human skull set with 8,601 diamonds, which he sold for 50 million pounds. Hirst's work deals with death, medicine, and the relationship between art and money. In 2026, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Seoul presented Damien Hirst: Nothing Is True But Everything Is Possible, his first large-scale solo exhibition in Asia, gathering some 50 works spanning four decades. MMCA officials acknowledged that choosing Hirst was a deliberate, even risky, move for a national museum, given the criticism over his commercialization and spectacle. Read more at The Korea Times.
Tracey Emin (born 1963)
Emin is the YBA whose work is most personal and most polarizing. My Bed (1998) is an installation consisting of her actual bed, surrounded by detritus: used condoms, stained underwear, empty vodka bottles, cigarette butts, and pregnancy tests. The bed was exhibited at the Tate Gallery for the Turner Prize in 1999 and became a national scandal. Emin's work is confessional, drawing on her own experiences of trauma, sexuality, and vulnerability. Tate Modern presented Tracey Emin: A Second Life from February 27 to August 31, 2026, the largest ever survey of her work, spanning 40 years and comprising over 100 works across painting, video, installation, textiles, and sculpture. The exhibition traces her career from her first solo show at White Cube through the height of the YBA era to her recent paintings, created after her cancer surgery in 2020. Read more at Dezeen. Palazzo Strozzi in Florence presented Sex and Solitude, the first institutional Emin exhibition in Italy, from July 2026, with a site-specific neon installation on the Renaissance building's facade. Sarah Lucas (born 1962)
Lucas uses found objects, food, and tabloid imagery to confront gender and sexuality with blunt humor. Au Naturel (1994) is an assemblage of a mattress, a bucket, a cucumber, and two oranges arranged to suggest a couple having sex. Her Nuds series (2009-present) uses stuffed tights to create abstract, bodily forms that reference female anatomy. Lucas's work is direct, funny, and uncomfortable, and she is widely considered the most formally inventive of the YBAs.
The Chapman Brothers (Jake born 1962, Dinos born 1966)
Jake and Dinos Chapman produce work that is deliberately grotesque and morally confrontational. Tragic Anatomies (1996) shows child mannequins with genitalia for faces, arranged on a tree. Their Hell (1999-2000) was a massive miniature diorama of Nazi atrocities, displayed in a glass case. Hell was destroyed in a warehouse fire in 2004, and the Chapmans made a new version called Fucking Hell (2008). The Chapmans' work tests the limits of what audiences will accept as art.
Marc Quinn (born 1964)
Quinn's Self (1991) is a frozen cast of his own head made from 4.5 liters of his own blood, extracted over five months. The work must be kept in a freezer to maintain its form, making it a sculpture that is literally alive and dead at the same time. Quinn has made new versions of Self every five years, creating a series that documents his aging through his own blood.
Phases and Evolution
The YBAs' first phase runs from 1988 to 1992, from Freeze to the Saatchi Gallery's exhibition of Hirst's shark. This is the period of self-organized exhibitions, art school connections, and the building of relationships with collectors and critics. The second phase runs from 1992 to 1997, when the YBAs became a media phenomenon. Charles Saatchi's collecting and exhibition strategy made the group famous, and the tabloid press discovered that contemporary art could generate outrage and headlines. The third phase runs from 1997, the year of Sensation, to the early 2000s, when the YBAs became international stars and the London art market boomed.
By the mid-2000s, the YBA moment was over. The artists had become established, wealthy, and middle-aged. The shock tactics that had defined the group no longer shocked. Hirst's 2007 For the Love of God skull and his 2008 Sotheby's auction, in which he bypassed his gallery and sold 223 new works directly for 111 million pounds, marked both the peak and the end of the YBA era. The 2008 financial crisis deflated the art market, and the YBAs' work lost value rapidly. The 2026 Tate Modern retrospective of Emin and the MMCA Seoul exhibition of Hirst represent a reassessment of the YBAs by major institutions, looking back at a moment that is now history.
Legacy and Influence
The YBAs' legacy is mixed. They put London at the center of the contemporary art world, a position it had not held since the 19th century. They made contemporary art visible to a broad public, including people who had never set foot in a gallery. They demonstrated that artists could organize their own exhibitions and build their own careers without waiting for institutional validation. But they also created a template for art as spectacle and commodity that has been widely criticized. Hirst's direct auction in 2008, bypassing his gallery, is seen as both a bold entrepreneurial move and a sign of the commodification of art. The YBAs' willingness to use dead animals, bodily fluids, and personal confession as art materials opened doors for younger artists, but it also established a culture of provocation for its own sake that has not always aged well.
The YBAs share with Postmodernism a willingness to use unconventional materials and to blur the boundaries between art and popular culture. Their use of found objects and everyday materials connects to assemblage and the tradition of Dadaism. Emin's confessional work relates to feminist art, though Emin has resisted the feminist label. Hirst's vitrines and specimens connect to the broader tradition of performance art in their use of real, physical materials rather than representations. The Tate Modern in London holds significant YBA works, including Hirst's shark and pieces by Emin, Lucas, and the Chapmans. The 2026 Tate Modern exhibition Tracey Emin: A Second Life is the largest survey of Emin's work to date. The Saatchi Gallery in London, now located in Chelsea, continues to exhibit contemporary British art. The Royal Academy of Arts was the venue for the 1997 Sensation exhibition that defined the YBA moment.
