In the 1830s, the painter J.M.W. Turner would arrive at the Royal Academy in London the day before the annual exhibition opened to the public, set up his easel in front of his already-hung painting, and proceed to repaint large sections of it on the spot. He was not alone. Every academician had the right to come in on "varnishing day" and apply final coats of varnish or make last-minute adjustments to their work before the public saw it. Turner was notorious for using the privilege to make dramatic changes, sometimes transforming a painting entirely. The other academicians complained. Turner did not care. He kept doing it until the end of his career.

The word comes from the French vernissage, meaning "varnishing," and it refers to the historical practice of setting aside a day before an exhibition's public opening for artists to apply final coats of varnish and make last-minute adjustments to their paintings. The tradition dates to at least 1809, when the Royal Academy of Arts in London formalized a varnishing day prior to its annual exhibitions. The first recorded English use of "vernissage" in print appeared around 1912.

A vernissage is an invitation-only preview of an art exhibition. It is held the evening before, or a few days before, the exhibition opens to the public. The audience is typically composed of the artist's friends and family, gallery collectors, critics, curators, and other art professionals. The atmosphere is part celebration, part sales event, part networking function. Wine is served. Speeches may be made. The artist is expected to attend and talk about the work.
The vernissage serves several functions. For the gallery, it is a marketing tool: the opening generates buzz, attracts media coverage, and gives collectors first access to the work before the general public arrives. For the artist, it is a moment of presentation and recognition, the first time the completed body of work is seen as a whole by an audience. For collectors, it is an opportunity to buy before the best pieces are gone. For critics, it is a chance to see the work and speak with the artist before writing a review.
The practice that became the vernissage began at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The Academy, founded in 1768, held annual exhibitions at Somerset House and later at the National Gallery and Burlington House. By 1809, the Academy had formalized a "varnishing day" on the day before the public opening. Academicians were allowed into the exhibition galleries to varnish their paintings and make final adjustments.
The practical reason was straightforward. Oil paintings that had been transported from studios to the exhibition hall could accumulate dust, suffer minor damage, or simply need a final coat of varnish to unify the surface. Varnishing day gave artists the chance to fix these problems. But the day also became a social event. Artists invited friends, patrons, and critics to see the work before the public opening. The varnishing and the socializing happened simultaneously.
Turner was the most famous abuser of the system. He arrived at varnishing day with paints and brushes and used the time to make substantial changes to his canvases, not just varnishing but repainting. Other academicians, including David Wilkie and Thomas Lawrence, also used the day for significant touch-ups, though none as dramatically as Turner. The practice continued at the Royal Academy through the 19th century.
The Paris Salon, established in 1667 under Louis XIV and organized by the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, was France's premier public exhibition. By the early 19th century, the Salon introduced le vernissage, a dedicated pre-opening day reserved for artists to apply final coats of varnish to their works on site. The Academie mandated the practice to standardize presentation and ensure a uniform sheen across the exhibition.
The practical ritual quickly transformed into an exclusive social preview. Exhibiting artists could invite select guests, including nobility, critics, and patrons, to view the installations privately before the public opening. Access was strictly regulated. Only approved exhibiting artists and their personal invitees were permitted entry. The general public was barred. This exclusivity facilitated discreet critiques and sales negotiations and reinforced the Salon's position as a gatekeeper of artistic prestige.
The formalization of vernissage practices accelerated in the 1830s and 1840s as the Salon's scale expanded. By the mid-19th century, the vernissage at the Paris Salon was a coveted highlight of the cultural calendar, covered by newspapers and attended by the political and cultural elite of France.
The English word "vernissage" entered the language around 1912, borrowed directly from French. By that point, the practice of varnishing paintings on site was becoming less common. Paintings were increasingly finished in the studio before being delivered to the gallery. But the social function of the pre-opening preview survived and grew. The term shifted from describing a practical workday to describing a social and commercial event.
In the 20th century, as the commercial gallery system replaced the academic salon as the primary venue for exhibiting new art, the vernissage became the standard opening event for galleries. The format is now familiar worldwide: an evening reception, wine and snacks, the artist present, collectors and critics circulating. The varnish is gone. The wine remains.
The vernissage also expanded beyond painting. Today, a vernissage can be held for exhibitions of sculpture, photography, video art, installation, and performance. The term is used internationally, though it is most common in European art circles. In the United States, "opening" or "opening reception" is more typical, though "vernissage" is used for high-end gallery events and art fair previews.
Less common but increasingly used is the finissage, a closing reception held on the last day of an exhibition. The finissage serves a different function: it is less about sales and more about reflection. Critics and curators who have had time to sit with the exhibition may return for a final look. The artist may give a talk or a tour. The finissage is quieter, less pressured, and often more substantive than the vernissage.
If you want to attend a vernissage, the simplest route is to get on gallery mailing lists. Commercial galleries in major art cities, New York's Chelsea, London's Mayfair, Berlin's Mitte, Paris's Marais, hold vernissages regularly, usually on Thursday or Friday evenings. Most are open to the public if you RSVP. Art fairs like Art Basel, Frieze, and the Armory Show hold vernissages for VIP ticket holders, with the public opening following the next day.
