Artists and game designers working within these constraints had to make every pixel count. A character's face might be 8 by 8 pixels. A tree might be 16 by 16. This language was developed by game designers and artists at companies like Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and Konami. Shigeru Miyamoto's designs for Super Mario Bros. (1985) and The Legend of Zelda (1986) are among the most recognized pixel art images in the world. The Transition and the Nostalgia Era (1990s-2000s)
As computing power increased in the 1990s, screens could display higher resolutions and more colors. The Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis offered 256 colors and higher sprite counts. The Sony PlayStation, released in 1994, introduced 3D graphics that made pixel-based 2D art increasingly obsolete in mainstream gaming. By the early 2000s, most commercial games used 3D models and high-resolution textures, and pixel art was associated with older, outdated technology.

Games like Cave Story (2004) by Daisuke Amaya, a one-person project made over five years, demonstrated that pixel art could be as expressive and emotionally resonant as any other visual style. The indie game movement of the late 2000s and 2010s embraced pixel art as a deliberate aesthetic choice, not a technical limitation. Games like Super Meat Boy (2010), Fez (2012), and Stardew Valley (2016) proved that pixel art still had a dedicated audience.
