In March 2026, a gallery in Tokyo filled its walls with 60-by-60 grids of painted pixels. Each grid contained 3,600 squares of color, arranged to reproduce images displayed on computer monitors. The artist, Keisuke Katsuki, was not painting pictures of landscapes or portraits. He was painting the structure of the screen itself. His source images included paintings by Claude Monet and J. M. W. Turner, artists known for their depictions of light. Katsuki translated those paintings into images on monitors, products of modern optical technology, and then rendered them again as paintings, reconstructing the red, green, and blue pixels with acrylic on panel. Pixel art is a digital art style in which images are constructed from individual pixels, each placed deliberately to form part of a larger image. The pixel is the smallest unit of a digital image, a single square of color on a grid. Pixel art emerged from the technical limitations of early computers and video games, which could display only a small number of pixels and a limited palette of colors. Artists working within those constraints developed a visual language of blocky forms, limited colors, and deliberate placement that became a recognizable aesthetic. Pixel art is art made by placing individual pixels on a grid to create an image. The word "pixel" is a contraction of "picture element," coined in 1965 by JPL scientist Frederic Billingsley. Each pixel is a single point of color in a raster image. In pixel art, the artist controls each pixel individually, rather than using tools that automatically generate smooth lines, gradients, or fills.
The defining characteristic of pixel art is intentionality. Every pixel is placed by the artist. This is different from digital painting, where brush tools create smooth strokes that the artist does not control pixel by pixel. It is also different from digital photography, where the camera captures millions of pixels automatically. In pixel art, the grid is small enough that each pixel is visible and contributes to the overall image. A typical pixel art image might be 32 by 32 pixels, 64 by 64, or 256 by 256. At those resolutions, the individual pixels are part of the aesthetic, not a limitation to be hidden.
Pixel art is a subset of digital art, specifically a raster-based art form. Raster images are made of a grid of pixels, as opposed to vector images, which are defined by mathematical paths. Pixel art is the most literal form of raster art: the grid is the medium, and the pixel is the mark.
Pixel art was born from constraint. Early computers and game consoles could display only a limited number of pixels on screen and a limited palette of colors. The Apple II, released in 1977, had a resolution of 280 by 192 pixels in six colors. The Nintendo Entertainment System, released in 1985, displayed 256 by 240 pixels with 54 colors on screen simultaneously. Artists and game designers working within these constraints had to make every pixel count. A character's face might be 8 by 8 pixels. A tree might be 16 by 16. The challenge was to create recognizable, expressive images with a handful of colored squares.
The result was a visual language of abbreviation and suggestion. A single pixel could be an eye. Two pixels could be a mouth. A diagonal line of pixels could suggest a sword or a branch. This language was developed by game designers and artists at companies like Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and Konami. Shigeru Miyamoto's designs for Super Mario Bros. (1985) and The Legend of Zelda (1986) are among the most recognized pixel art images in the world. The sprites for Mario, Link, and other characters were drawn pixel by pixel on graph paper before being programmed into the game.
As computing power increased in the 1990s, screens could display higher resolutions and more colors. The Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis offered 256 colors and higher sprite counts. The Sony PlayStation, released in 1994, introduced 3D graphics that made pixel-based 2D art increasingly obsolete in mainstream gaming. By the early 2000s, most commercial games used 3D models and high-resolution textures, and pixel art was associated with older, outdated technology.
But pixel art did not disappear. Independent game developers continued to use it, both for practical reasons (smaller teams, lower budgets) and for aesthetic ones. Games like Cave Story (2004) by Daisuke Amaya, a one-person project made over five years, demonstrated that pixel art could be as expressive and emotionally resonant as any other visual style. The indie game movement of the late 2000s and 2010s embraced pixel art as a deliberate aesthetic choice, not a technical limitation. Games like Super Meat Boy (2010), Fez (2012), and Stardew Valley (2016) proved that pixel art still had a dedicated audience.
The transition of pixel art from game design to fine art has been gradual. Artists began exhibiting pixel-based works in galleries in the 2010s, often exploring the relationship between digital and physical media. The question these artists ask is not whether pixel art is "real art" but what happens when the pixel, the fundamental unit of the digital image, is translated into physical materials like paint, glass, or tile.
In 2026, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam presented Pixel Pioneers, the first major exhibition in the museum's history devoted entirely to digital art. Running from April 25 to September 13, 2026, the exhibition traced how artists have used digital technologies to reshape visual culture over the past decades. Curated by Amira Gad, the show used the pixel as its organizing thread, running from analog video through new media to AI systems. The exhibition included Feng Mengbo's Long March: Restart (2008), a monumental interactive projection that reworks the Chinese Long March through the grammar of side-scrolling video games. Treister was one of the first artists to use pixel-based imagery as a tool for political and institutional critique. Struycken is a Dutch artist who has worked with computer-generated images since the early 1970s. His work uses algorithms to generate patterns of colored squares that explore the relationship between digital systems and visual perception. Struycken's work predates the pixel art of video games but shares its concern with the grid as a structural unit. His works are in the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and were included in Pixel Pioneers in 2026.
