In the fall of 1939, as Nazi tanks rolled through Poland, a 30-year-old American art critic named Clement Greenberg published an essay called "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" in the Partisan Review. Greenberg argued that there were two kinds of culture in the modern world: the avant-garde, which pushed art forward through formal experimentation, and kitsch, which was "popular, commercial art and literature with their chromotypes, magazine covers, illustrations, ads, slick and pulp fiction, comics, Tin Pan Alley music, tap dancing, Hollywood movies." Kitsch, Greenberg wrote, was "a product of the industrial revolution which urbanized the masses of Western Europe and America and established what is called universal literacy." It was ersatz culture, designed for "those who, insensible to the values of genuine culture, are hungry nevertheless for the diversion that only culture of some sort can provide." The essay became one of the most influential pieces of art criticism of the 20th century, and it established kitsch as a concept that would be debated, revised, and attacked for the next 85 years. Kitsch is art, design, or cultural production that is considered lowbrow, sentimental, and mass-produced. It imitates the appearance of art but lacks the originality, depth, or formal innovation that distinguishes "high" art from commercial product. The term originated in the 19th-century German art markets, where cheap, sentimental paintings and decorative objects were sold to the new urban middle class. Kitsch is characterized by emotional manipulation, formulaic beauty, nostalgic or saccharine subject matter, and mechanical reproduction. A painting of a crying child with large eyes, a velvet Elvis portrait, a garden gnome, a porcelain figurine of a puppy: these are the archetypal kitsch objects. But kitsch is not just a category of bad taste. It is a concept that reveals how judgments about art are tied to class, education, and cultural authority.

Kitsch is difficult to define because it is not a style or a movement. It is a judgment about the relationship between art and its audience. The word comes from the German kitsch, though its exact etymology is debated. One theory traces it to the German verb verkitschen, meaning to make cheap. Another links it to the English word "sketch," as in the cheap sketches sold to tourists in Munich in the 19th century. What is clear is that the term emerged in the 1860s or 1870s to describe cheap, sentimental art produced for the growing middle-class market.
The defining features of kitsch are: (1) sentimentality, the deliberate manipulation of easy emotions; (2) imitation, the copying of recognized art styles without understanding or extending them; (3) mass production, the mechanical reproduction of images that were originally unique; (4) formulaic beauty, the use of conventional prettiness rather than original vision; and (5) accessibility, the requirement that the work be immediately understandable without effort or education. Kitsch, as Greenberg argued, is a product of the industrial revolution. Before industrialization, culture was divided between folk culture (produced by and for rural communities) and high culture (produced for the aristocracy and the church). The industrial revolution created a new urban middle class with literacy, disposable income, and leisure time, but without the educational background to engage with high culture. Kitsch filled the gap. It gave the middle class the cultural products it wanted: pretty pictures, sentimental stories, decorative objects that looked like art but required no effort to appreciate.
The German art world was the first to theorize this phenomenon. In the late 19th century, German critics used the word Kitsch to describe the cheap paintings, reproductions, and decorative objects sold in Munich and other cities. The concept was initially aesthetic: kitsch was bad art. But it quickly acquired a moral dimension. Kitsch was not just ugly. It was dishonest. It pretended to be art while being merely product.
Clement Greenberg's 1939 essay was the most influential theoretical statement on kitsch. Greenberg positioned the avant-garde and kitsch as diametrical opposites. The avant-garde "imitates the processes of art" while kitsch "imitates its effects." The avant-garde pushes forward, experimenting with form and medium. Kitsch looks backward, reproducing familiar images and emotions. Greenberg saw kitsch as a threat not just to art but to civilization. He argued that totalitarian regimes (Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia) promoted kitsch because it was easy to control and consumed by the masses without critical thought. The avant-garde, by contrast, was difficult, autonomous, and resistant to political manipulation.

Theodor W. Adorno, in his posthumously published Aesthetic Theory (1970), complicated Greenberg's binary. Adorno wrote: "Kitsch parodies aesthetic catharsis. As a toxic element, it is mixed into all art." This is a striking departure from Greenberg. Adorno is not saying that kitsch is the opposite of art. He is saying that kitsch is inside art, that every artwork contains a kitsch element. The desire to move the audience, to produce an emotional response, is always at risk of becoming manipulation. The boundary between art and kitsch is not a wall. It is a tension that every artwork must negotiate.
From the 1960s onward, attitudes toward kitsch became more permissive. The 2026 call for papers notes that "from the 1960s onwards, attitudes toward kitsch became more permissive. Its pedagogical rejection faded, giving way to amused and ironic displays in publications such as Die Kitschpostille (1966) and Kitschlexikon (1970)." Pop Art, particularly the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, deliberately incorporated imagery from mass culture, blurring the line between kitsch and high art. Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans (1962) and Lichtenstein's comic-strip paintings used the visual language of commercial production but presented them in gallery settings, forcing viewers to ask whether the difference between art and kitsch was aesthetic or institutional.
Jeff Koons (born 1955) is the contemporary artist most associated with kitsch. His Pink Panther (1988), a porcelain sculpture of a bare-breasted woman holding the cartoon character, deliberately uses the visual language of kitsch: glossy surfaces, sentimental imagery, mass-cultural references. Koons does not critique kitsch. He embraces it. He has said: "I believe in the viewer, not the critic. I believe in the masses." Koons's work makes the problem of kitsch inescapable: if a porcelain sculpture of a pink panther in a museum is art, then what exactly separates it from the kitsch it resembles?
The 2026 call for papers notes that "it is also notable how frequently the term 'kitsch' appears in commentary on contemporary art, particularly in works produced with the aid of artificial intelligence." AI-generated images, which produce visually appealing but derivative images by combining existing visual data, have been widely described as kitsch. The parallel is exact: AI art imitates the effects of art without original vision, just as Greenberg described kitsch as imitating the effects of art without the processes. A 2025 study in Art and Fashion traces "the transformation and dissemination of kitsch art in the context of consumerism," arguing that kitsch "not only demonstrates its unique commercial value in market-aligned phases but also reveals traces of shifting contemporary cultural and aesthetic preferences." Greenberg's "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" (1939) established the theoretical framework for understanding kitsch as the cultural product of industrial capitalism. His binary between avant-garde and kitsch shaped art criticism for decades and remains the starting point for any discussion of the concept.
Adorno's Aesthetic Theory (1970) complicated Greenberg's binary by arguing that kitsch is "mixed into all art" as a "toxic element." Adorno recognized that the desire to produce an emotional response in the audience, which is essential to art, is also the mechanism of kitsch. Every artwork risks becoming kitsch.
Eco's "La struttura del cattivo gusto" (1964) challenged the conflation of mass culture with kitsch. Eco argued that kitsch is not simply popular culture but a specific kind of aesthetic production that "parades borrowed emotional content for the sake of stimulation." Eco's semiotic analysis provided a more precise definition than Greenberg's, distinguishing between genuinely popular culture and kitsch that pretends to be art.
Koons's Pink Panther (1988) is in the Museum of Modern Art. His Balloon Dog (1994-2000), a monumental stainless steel sculpture of a balloon animal, sold at Christie's in 2013 for $58.4 million, the highest price ever paid for a work by a living artist at that time. Koons's work is the ultimate test case for the boundary between art and kitsch.
Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans (1962) are in the Museum of Modern Art. Warhol's use of commercial imagery challenged the distinction between high art and mass culture that Greenberg had drawn, opening the door to the ironic embrace of kitsch that characterized postmodern art.
The honest answer is that you cannot always tell, and the inability to tell is part of what makes the concept useful. Greenberg's test was formal: does the work experiment with the medium, or does it merely reproduce familiar effects? Adorno's test was dialectical: does the work acknowledge its own risk of becoming kitsch, or does it pretend to innocence? Eco's test was semiotic: does the work generate its own meaning, or does it borrow meaning from elsewhere?
In practice, the most useful question is: what would happen if you removed the emotional manipulation? If a painting of a sunset makes you feel moved because of its color, composition, and paint handling, it is probably art. If it makes you feel moved because sunsets are inherently sentimental and the painting adds nothing beyond a photographic reproduction of one, it is probably kitsch. The difference lies in what the artist adds beyond the subject.
Kitsch is the inverse of the avant-garde as Greenberg defined it. It is closely related to camp, another aesthetic category that involves the ironic appreciation of lowbrow culture, though camp celebrates kitsch while kitsch is produced without irony. It connects to Pop Art, which deliberately blurred the boundary between high art and mass culture, and to postmodernism, which rejected the high/low culture divide.
