Jerry Uelsmann (1934-2022)

How to Spot Composite Photography
In 19th-century combination prints, look for inconsistencies in lighting and scale between figures and background. Rejlander's figures often have slightly different shadow directions because they were photographed separately. Clouds in Victorian landscape photographs are almost always composite additions: if the clouds have a different tonal range or grain structure than the land below, they were printed from a separate negative.
In political photomontage, the seams are often deliberately visible. Heartfield and Hoch wanted viewers to see the cuts and juxtapositions. The roughness was part of the message: these images were constructed, not found, and the construction itself was a political act.
In digital composites, look for mismatched noise patterns, inconsistent depth of field, or edges that are too clean. Modern compositing software can blend images seamlessly, but physics still gives it away: light from different sources casts shadows in different directions, and no amount of pixel manipulation can fix that.
Composite Photography Today
Digital tools have made compositing accessible to anyone with a smartphone. Apps can swap backgrounds, combine group shots, and insert objects with a few taps. The technical barrier that once required a darkroom and years of printing skill has collapsed. What has not changed is the aesthetic question that Rejlander faced in 1857: does the composite serve the image, or does it call attention to itself?
The Rijksmuseum's 2026 exhibition drew a direct line from Victorian combination prints to contemporary deepfakes. Hany Farid, a digital forensics specialist at UC Berkeley, told the New York Times that today's AI-generated images are "wildly different" from historical photo manipulation because "we've raised the bar in terms of what's possible and simultaneously lowered the bar in terms of who can do it."
