He let his hand travel across the paper at speed, producing a tangle of lines that gradually resolved into fragments: a hand here, a foot there, a breast, a face dissolving into a web of marks. The technique was developed by Surrealist artists in the 1920s as a visual analogue to the automatic writing pioneered by André Breton and Philippe Soupault in their 1919 text Les Champs Magnétiques. Breton defined Surrealism itself as "pure psychic automatism, by which it is intended to express, verbally, in writing, or by other means, the real process of thought." What Is Automatism?
Automatism in art is the practice of making marks without conscious planning or control. The artist may work rapidly, with eyes closed, in a trance-like state, or with deliberate suppression of the rational mind's editorial function. The goal is not randomness. The goal is to access material that lies below the threshold of conscious thought: memories, desires, anxieties, and associations that the rational mind would normally filter out.
The technique has roots in Spiritualist mediumship. In the late 19th century, mediums produced "automatic writing" and "automatic drawing" during seances, claiming that spirits guided their hands. The Surrealists borrowed the technique but replaced spirits with the unconscious mind. Breton, who had trained in medicine and psychiatry, was familiar with Freud's work on free association and dream analysis. He saw automatism as a way to apply Freudian principles to art making.
Automatism can take several forms. In automatic drawing, the artist lets the pen or pencil move across paper without a predetermined image. In automatic painting, the artist applies paint spontaneously, sometimes using unconventional tools or techniques. In automatic writing, which preceded visual automatism, the writer types or writes as fast as possible without stopping to think. In frottage, developed by Max Ernst, the artist rubs a pencil over paper placed on a textured surface, allowing the texture to suggest images. In decalcomania, also used by Ernst, wet paint is pressed between two surfaces and then pulled apart, producing patterns that the artist then modifies.
Origins and History
Literary Automatism (1919)
Automatism began as a literary practice. In 1919, André Breton and Philippe Soupault wrote Les Champs Magnétiques (The Magnetic Fields), the first work of automatic writing. They sat together and typed as fast as they could, without stopping to correct or revise. The result was a stream of images, associations, and non sequiturs that read like a dream transcript. Breton described the process as "the first manifestation of Surrealism." The text was not published until 1920, but it established the principle that art could be made by bypassing conscious control.
Visual Automatism (1923-1925)
André Masson (1896-1987) was the first artist to translate automatic writing into visual form. Living in a studio on the Rue Blomet in Paris, he was neighbors with Joan Miro and part of a circle that included Michel Leiris, Georges Bataille, and Antonin Artaud. Masson began making automatic drawings in late 1923 or early 1924. He worked rapidly, with pen and ink, letting the line wander without a plan. Partial figures emerged from the abstract web: hands, feet, faces, body fragments that appeared and dissolved. The 2026 retrospective "André Masson: There Is No Finished World" at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, timed to the centennial of the Surrealist Manifesto, traces Masson's career from these first automatic drawings through his sand paintings, his political works of the 1930s, and his exile in the United States during World War II. The Surrealist Manifesto (1924)
Breton published the first Manifesto of Surrealism in 1924, defining the movement as "pure psychic automatism." The manifesto made automatism the foundational method of Surrealism. Masson joined the movement, though his relationship with Breton was always difficult. He left and rejoined the Surrealist group several times, objecting to Breton's doctrinaire approach. Max Ernst and Frottage (1925)
Max Ernst (1891-1976) developed frottage in 1925, a technique in which he placed paper over textured surfaces and rubbed with pencil. The resulting patterns suggested images: forests, cities, creatures. Ernst described the process as a way of "provoking hallucinations" from the textures. His Histoire Naturelle (1926) is a series of 34 frottage prints that transform wood grain, leaf veins, and other textures into dreamlike landscapes. Frottage is automatism by proxy: instead of the unconscious guiding the hand, the texture guides the eye, and the artist's imagination does the rest.
Automatism and Abstract Expressionism (1940s-1950s)
Automatism crossed the Atlantic during World War II. Masson fled occupied France and settled in Connecticut from 1941 to 1945. His automatic drawings and sand paintings were shown in New York and had a direct influence on the young artists who would become the Abstract Expressionists. Arshile Gorky's drawings from the mid-1940s show Masson's influence in their free, flowing line. Jackson Pollock's drip paintings, beginning in 1947, are the most famous extension of automatism into painting. Pollock laid canvas on the floor and dripped, poured, and flung paint from sticks and cans. The process was automatic in the Surrealist sense: Pollock suppressed conscious composition and let the gesture produce the image. Harold Rosenberg called this "action painting," but its roots are in Masson's automatic drawings on the Rue Blomet.
The Centre Pompidou-Metz retrospective notes that Masson's "influence on the beginnings of Abstract Expressionism" is one of the "best-known aspects" of his work. André Masson (1896-1987)
Masson's Dessin automatique (1924-1925) is in the Centre Pompidou. His Automatic Drawing (1924), showing a fragmented female figure embedded in a web of lines, is one of the most reproduced Surrealist works on paper. Masson also developed sand paintings, in which he scattered sand over adhesive on canvas, letting chance determine the distribution. André Breton (1896-1966)
Breton was not a visual artist, but his automatic writing in Les Champs Magnétiques (1919) and his theoretical writings in the Manifesto of Surrealism (1924) established automatism as a practice. His definition of Surrealism as "pure psychic automatism" made the technique the movement's foundational method.
Max Ernst (1891-1976)
Ernst's Histoire Naturelle (1926) is the major work of frottage. His decalcomania paintings, including The Eye of Silence (1943-1944), used pressed paint to generate patterns that Ernst then modified into landscapes and figures. Ernst's automatism was more mediated than Masson's: he used techniques that introduced chance at the level of pattern generation, then consciously developed the results.
Joan Miro (1893-1983)
Miro, Masson's neighbor on the Rue Blomet, practiced a form of automatism that combined spontaneous drawing with deliberate simplification. His The Harlequin's Carnival (1924-1925) began with automatic marks that Miro then refined into a composition of floating figures, animals, and abstract shapes. Miro's automatism was less raw than Masson's, but it shared the principle of starting from unconscious marks.
Jackson Pollock (1912-1956)
Pollock's drip paintings, including Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) (1950) and One: Number 31 (1950), are the most famous works of automatic painting. Pollock worked on the floor, moving around the canvas, dripping and pouring paint in a state of concentrated physical engagement that suppressed conscious composition. The results are not random. They have a rhythm and structure that comes from the body's movement, not from a preconceived plan.
How to Look at Automatic Art
When you look at an automatic drawing, the first thing to notice is the line. Is it continuous or broken? Fast or slow? Masson's early automatic drawings feature a line that moves at high speed, changing direction abruptly, producing a web of marks that is both chaotic and controlled. The line is not random. It has a rhythm that comes from the artist's hand and nervous system.
Second, look for emergent images. Automatic drawings often contain partial figures or recognizable forms that appear within the abstract web. These are not planned. They emerge from the same process that produces Rorschach-like patterns: the mind finds images in random marks. Masson's drawings are full of body fragments because his unconscious was processing memories of war. Your unconscious would produce different images.
Third, distinguish between automatism as process and automatism as style. Some artists who are called "automatic" actually work with careful planning. The label "automatic" should refer to the method of production, not the appearance of the finished work. Pollock's drip paintings look chaotic, but they were made with intense physical concentration.
