In January 2026, the Center for Book Arts in New York opened Rewriting the World: Isidore Isou and the Lettrist Book, an exhibition drawing on more than 100 rare items from the archives of Lettrist scholar Frederic Acquaviva. Isidore Isou, born Jean-Isidore Goldstein in Romania in 1925, escaped an anti-Semitic pogrom and arrived in Paris in 1945 with a mission to found a new avant-garde movement called Lettrisme. The book was central to Lettrisme. Isou conceived of the Lettrist novel as "metagraphic," combining text, images, mathematical formulas, music, and asemic writing. His first book, Les Journaux des dieux (The Diaries of the Gods, 1950), included a 50-page sequence that layered overlapping blue, red, and yellow inks in a dizzying array of communicative systems. Artists' books are books made as artworks themselves. Not books about art, not books illustrated by artists, but books where the form, structure, material, and sequence of pages are the artwork. The artist's book is a medium, not a genre: it can be a codex, a scroll, a accordion fold, a tunnel book, a pop-up, or an object that only loosely resembles a book. The defining characteristic is that the book form is integral to the artistic concept, not merely a container for content.

Before the term "artist's book" existed, artists were making books as artworks. Isidore Isou's Lettrist books, beginning with Les Journaux des dieux (1950), combined text, image, and non-verbal marks in ways that anticipated later artists' books. Guy Debord, who was a Lettrist before breaking away to form the Situationist International, produced Memoires (1959) with Asger Jorn, a book of detourned text and images bound with a sandpaper cover that damaged any book placed next to it on the shelf.
Dieter Roth, a Swiss artist working in Iceland and Germany, began making books in the 1950s that challenged the form. His Bilderbuch (Picture Book, 1957) was composed of die-cut holes that revealed images on subsequent pages. Roth later made books from organic materials, including Literaturwurst (Literature Sausage, 1961-1969), where he ground up books and encased the paste in sausage casings, replacing the traditional book with a food object that would rot.
Ed Ruscha's Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963) is generally cited as the first modern artist's book. It contains 26 photographs of gasoline stations along Route 66, printed as a cheap paperback in an edition of 400. Ruscha followed it with Various Small Fires (1964), Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966), and Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass (1968). The books were deadpan, photographic, and deliberately unremarkable. They rejected the preciousness of fine art objects and treated the book as a democratic, distributable medium. Ruscha's books influenced a generation of artists who saw the book as a viable artistic form.
The 1970s saw the emergence of specialized presses and institutions. Printed Matter, founded in New York in 1976 by Lucy Lippard and others, became the primary distributor of artists' books in the United States. The Center for Book Arts, founded in New York in 1974 by Richard Minsky, was the first non-profit organization dedicated to the art of the book. The Visual Studies Workshop, founded by Nathan Lyons in Rochester in 1969, became a center for photographic book art.
By the 1980s, artists' books had become an established medium with a growing institutional presence. The Franklin Furnace Archive, founded by Martha Wilson in New York in 1976, built a major collection of artists' books that was later transferred to the Museum of Modern Art. Universities began teaching book arts programs. The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, the Oregon College of Art and Craft, and the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts trained a generation of book artists.
The 1990s and 2000s saw artists' books expand into digital and hybrid forms. Susan Kae Grant's Shadow Interplay (2000s) used digital printing and hand binding to create books that combined photography and sculptural form. Tauba Auerbach's later work, including the Diagonal Press series (2010s), used letterpress printing and geometric design to create books that function as both objects and conceptual statements.
Ruscha's Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963) is the foundational modern artist's book. Its deadpan photographic style, cheap production, and democratic distribution model established the artist's book as a form that could reject gallery preciousness while still functioning as art. Ruscha's subsequent books, including Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966), continued this approach. His books are in the collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and the Getty Research Institute.
Roth made books that challenged the physical stability of the book form. His Literaturwurst (1961-1969) ground up existing books and encased them in sausage casings.
