The Russian avant-garde (1917-1930) produced Constructivism, Suprematism, and some of the most innovative art of the 20th century. Then Stalin imposed Socialist Realism, "unambiguously positive images of life in communist Russia." Art that served the state. Art that was propaganda. But was it also beautiful?
