Aaron Blaise's Creature Art Teacher: Disney-Level Animal Drawing Instruction at a Working Artist's Price

When Aaron Blaise teaches you how to draw a lion, he is teaching you how to draw a lion as someone who spent years at Disney Animation Studios studying and animating lions for The Lion King. That specificity of experience is what separates Creature Art Teacher from every other online art education platform. There are plenty of instructors who can teach you animal drawing. There is exactly one who was a supervising animator on Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Mulan.

The platform has grown significantly since its early days. As of 2026, it offers over 800 hours of video instruction across animal drawing, creature design, animation principles, digital painting, and traditional media. The question is whether Aaron's Disney pedigree translates into effective online teaching, or whether the courses trade on nostalgia rather than delivering practical skills.

The Pricing Structure: Three Ways to Access the Content

Creature Art Teacher offers three tiers, and choosing the right one depends on how you learn:

• Monthly Streaming ($9.99/month): Streaming-only access to 650+ hours of video. New courses become available 60 to 90 days after their initial release. This is the lowest-commitment option and works well if you want to test the waters before committing.
• Annual Premium ($99/year, regularly $249): Full streaming and download access to 750+ hours of content. All courses in your account are yours to keep forever, even if you cancel. This is the best value for most learners.
• Lifetime Membership ($799, regularly $1,250): One-time purchase for permanent access to everything. Worth it only if you plan to use the library as a long-term reference resource over several years.

Individual courses are also available a la carte, ranging from $5 for short tutorials to $75 for comprehensive multi-hour courses. Aaron also runs periodic 60% off student and teacher discounts, so if you qualify, wait for those promotions rather than paying full price.

Animal Drawing: The Inside-Out Method

Aaron's animal drawing courses are the platform's strongest offering. Instead of teaching you to copy the surface appearance of animals from photographs, he teaches a structural approach that starts with skeletal architecture and builds outward through muscular anatomy to surface forms.

This method means you learn to draw animals convincingly from any angle and in any pose, not just the poses you have seen in reference photos. The courses cover species-specific anatomy across big cats, canines, horses, birds, marine mammals, and other groups. Each species gets focused attention on the specific anatomical features, proportional relationships, and movement patterns that distinguish it.

The gesture drawing instruction is particularly valuable. Aaron teaches you to capture animal movement and energy in quick sketches, developing the ability to convey the dynamic quality of living creatures in a few confident lines. This is the animator's perspective on animal drawing, and it produces results that feel alive in a way that purely observational drawing does not.

Creature Design: Fantasy Grounded in Biology

The creature design courses teach you to create believable fantasy creatures that feel grounded in biological reality. Aaron covers hybrid creature design (combining anatomical features from multiple real animals), environmental adaptation (designing creatures whose features make sense for their habitat), and character development for creatures.

This is where Aaron's Disney experience becomes most apparent. He approaches creature design the same way a character designer at a major studio would: thinking about personality, narrative role, and visual identity alongside anatomy. A well-designed creature on this platform is not just anatomically plausible. It communicates something about who it is and what its role is in the story.

The platform also features guest instructors for specialized workshops. A recent example is a two-day live workshop on drawing dinosaurs with Terryl Whitlatch, the creature designer behind the Star Wars prequel creatures. These collaborative sessions expand the platform's expertise beyond Aaron's own specializations.

Animation Principles for Creatures

For students interested in animation specifically, Aaron teaches animation principles as they apply to animal and creature movement. The courses cover quadruped locomotion mechanics, the physics of flight, fluid dynamics for swimming creatures, walk cycles for various creature types, weight and balance, facial animation, and action poses.

These courses provide foundational knowledge that is directly applicable to professional character animation work. However, if your primary goal is 3D animation rather than 2D or traditional, you would get more targeted training from CG Spectrum's 3D animation programs, which offer structured diploma tracks with mentorship from working studio artists.

Traditional and Digital Coverage

Aaron teaches in both traditional and digital media. Traditional drawing courses cover pencil, charcoal, and physical media. Digital courses demonstrate workflows in Photoshop and other tools. The platform has also expanded beyond its core animal and creature focus to include courses on watercolor painting, oil painting, pen and ink, and perspective drawing, which makes it a more well-rounded resource than its name suggests.

The texture creation instruction for rendering fur, scales, feathers, and skin surfaces is practical and detailed. Aaron demonstrates these techniques in both traditional and digital contexts, which means you develop fundamental skills that transfer across media.

How It Compares to Other Platforms

Creature Art Teacher occupies a specific niche that no other platform fills as well. Here is how it stacks up:

• Versus 21 Draw: 21 Draw offers broader illustration coverage at $59/year, but none of its instructors match Aaron's specific credentials in animal drawing and creature design. If animals and creatures are your focus, Aaron's platform is the better choice despite the higher price.
• Versus Ctrl+Paint: Ctrl+Paint is free and excellent for digital painting fundamentals, but it does not cover animal anatomy or creature design at all. The two platforms complement each other well.
• Versus CGMA: CGMA offers live critique and structured 8-week terms with working studio professionals, but at $699 per course. Aaron's courses are pre-recorded and self-paced, which means no live feedback, but also no term schedules to keep up with.

Insider Tips

• Go with the annual premium membership. At $99/year, you get download access and permanent ownership of all courses in your account. The monthly streaming plan restricts you to streaming only and delays new course access by 60 to 90 days.
• Check the live bootcamp schedule. Aaron runs live workshops like the Creature Design Bootcamp (scheduled for July 30 through August 3). These are separate from the standard course library and cost extra, but they offer real-time interaction that the pre-recorded courses cannot match.
• The $1 gesture drawing course is a steal. Aaron offers a gesture drawing course for $1. At that price, it is the cheapest way to evaluate whether his teaching style works for you before committing to a membership.
• If you are a student or teacher, wait for the discount. Aaron runs periodic 60% off promotions for students and teachers. These are announced on the site and through his email list.

Final Verdict: Who Is This Actually For?

Creature Art Teacher is the best online resource for artists who want to draw animals and design creatures convincingly. Aaron's combination of Disney-level professional experience, deep anatomical knowledge, and genuine teaching ability is not replicated anywhere else at this price point.

It is not the right platform if you want broad illustration courses, live critique, or a structured curriculum with assignments and feedback. It is also not ideal for 3D-focused artists, since the instruction is primarily 2D and traditional. But if you want to learn animal anatomy from someone who animated lions for The Lion King, or creature design from someone who built characters for Aladdin and Mulan, this is where you go. Start with the annual premium membership at $99/year, and if the teaching style clicks for you, the lifetime option at $799 becomes a reasonable long-term investment.
