Clip Studio Paint is used by over 60 million people worldwide. It is the software that professional manga artists in Japan, webtoon creators in Korea, and comic illustrators everywhere actually use to produce their work. Version 5.0, released March 11, 2026, brings approximately 400 new features and improvements, including Smart Shape, 3D hand models, and animation in Simple Mode. It is the most significant update in years.
But it also comes with a price increase. Celsys raised perpetual license prices by an average of 10% globally to "improve profitability and ensure continuous service provision." PRO went from $58.50 to $63.00. EX went from $258 to $277. The Update Pass, which lets perpetual license holders access new features without buying a new version, now costs $10.99/year for PRO and $31.99/year for EX. Is CSP still worth it? For comic and manga artists, the answer is an unequivocal yes. Nobody else comes close.
The standout feature of v5.0 is Smart Shape. Draw a rough line, long-press with the pen, and CSP snaps it to a clean straight line, curve, or geometric shape. No switching to the Figure tool. This sounds small until you use it. Drawing panel borders, architectural elements, and mechanical details becomes dramatically faster. You can toggle it in Preferences > Tool.
Drawing hands is the universal pain point for illustrators. CSP v5.0 adds high-quality 3D hand models to the Material palette with a range of customizable hand shapes. You can pose them using hand pose materials or the Hand Scanner (which captures your real hand via camera and applies the pose to the 3D model). This is not a gimmick. For comic artists who draw dozens of hands per page, it saves real time.
This is where CSP separates itself from every competitor. No other application, at any price, offers this depth of comic-specific tooling.
CSP's panel layout tools let you create, resize, and split panels with a few clicks. Panels can be any shape, including irregular borders. The panel border tool automatically creates ruled lines and gutters. You can mask content to panel boundaries so artwork never spills outside.
The speech bubble tool creates balloons of any shape with automatic tail positioning. Text inside bubbles handles vertical and horizontal Japanese text, and the typography tools support professional comic lettering with kerning, leading, and font management.
Screen tones are the dot patterns used in manga for shading and texture. CSP includes a library of pre-made tones and lets you create custom ones. You can apply tones to selections, adjust density, and scrape them with erasers to create gradients and effects, exactly like traditional manga tone work.
Webtoon mode formats your canvas for vertical-scroll comics. It splits long canvases into segments for export and handles the specific resolution and formatting requirements of platforms like LINE Webtoon and Tapas.
The EX version adds multi-page management: create and manage entire comic books, manga chapters, or webtoon series in a single project file. Page thumbnails, page ordering, and batch export are all built in. This is the feature that justifies the EX price for professional comic artists.
CSP's brush engine is widely regarded as having the most natural drawing feel of any digital art application. The engine captures the subtle variations in pressure, tilt, and velocity that make digital strokes feel like traditional media. The real-time stabilization smooths jittery lines while preserving the character of your stroke, and it is adjustable per brush.
The CLIP STUDIO ASSETS marketplace contains over 100,000 brushes, materials, 3D models, and other assets, many of them free. This community-driven library is one of CSP's biggest advantages. If you need a specific brush for a specific style, someone has probably already made it.
CSP supports both vector and raster layers in the same document. Vector layers give you editable, scalable linework. Raster layers handle painting, tones, and effects. The ability to ink on vector layers and color on raster layers, with automatic filling that respects vector boundaries, is a workflow that no other app replicates as smoothly.
Vector lines can be adjusted after drawing: move control points, change line width, smooth curves. This is invaluable for inking, where you often need to fix a line without redrawing it.
CSP includes 3D reference models for figures, poses, backgrounds, and now hands. You can pose them, adjust camera angle, change lighting, and use them as reference for drawing. The 3D models are not meant to replace drawing skill. They are reference tools, like wooden mannequins but vastly more flexible.
The ability to drag a 3D model into your canvas, pose it, and use it as an underdrawing reference is a workflow that traditional artists and digital artists both find useful. Combined with the ASSETS library's thousands of pose materials, this system significantly reduces the time spent on preliminary sketching.
CSP is one of the few professional creative applications that still offers a perpetual license alongside its subscription. Here is the full pricing breakdown:
The perpetual license includes all v5.0 features and bug fixes (up to v5.0.x). To get features added after v5.0, you need the Update Pass or a subscription. Even after the Update Pass expires, you keep your perpetual version.
This is a fair model. You can buy PRO for $63, own it forever, and optionally pay $10.99/year for ongoing feature updates. Compare this to Adobe Photoshop at $22.99/month with no perpetual option, or Adobe Illustrator at $22.99/month. CSP's pricing is dramatically more favorable for artists who do not need constant updates.
The 10% price increase is noticeable but justified by the scope of the v5.0 update. Celsys is transparent about the reasoning: they need sustainable revenue to continue development. Given that the alternative is Adobe's subscription-only model, the increase is tolerable.
CSP is available on Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, and ChromeOS. The iPad version is a fully functional professional tool, not a stripped-down companion. Files sync through cloud storage (10GB included with subscription). The Android and ChromeOS versions have improved significantly and are now viable for professional work on Samsung Galaxy Tab and similar devices.
| Feature | Clip Studio Paint | Procreate | Adobe Fresco | |---|---|---|---| | Price | $63 (PRO) / $277 (EX) | $12.99 | Free / $7.99-mo | | Comic/manga tools | Best available | Basic | Basic | | Vector layers | Yes | No | Yes | | 3D reference models | Yes (extensive) | Limited | No | | Multi-page management | Yes (EX) | No | No | | Animation | Yes (up to 24fps PRO, unlimited EX) | Yes (limited) | Yes (frame-by-frame) | | Platform | Win/Mac/iPad/Android/iPhone/ChromeOS | iPad only | iPad/iPhone/Win | | Asset library | 100,000+ (ASSETS) | Limited | Photoshop brushes |
CSP wins on comic production tools, vector layers, 3D models, multi-page management, and platform availability. Procreate wins on price and simplicity. Fresco wins on watercolour simulation and Adobe integration.
Comic artists and manga creators at any level. CSP is the industry standard for comic production. There is no real alternative.
Webtoon creators who need vertical-scroll formatting and episode management.
Illustrators who want the most natural brush feel and the largest asset library.
Animators who need 2D animation tools integrated with their illustration workflow.
iPad artists who want a more professional tool than Procreate, with vector layers and 3D models.
Who should look elsewhere: Photo editors should use Adobe Photoshop or Affinity Photo. Graphic designers should use Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Designer. Natural media painters focused on oil and watercolour should try ArtRage Vitae or Adobe Fresco. Artists who want maximum simplicity should buy Procreate for $12.99.
Clip Studio Paint 5.0 is the best comic and manga production tool on the market, and it is not close. The Smart Shape feature, 3D hand models, and continuous auto-save are genuine workflow improvements that save time and prevent lost work. The brush engine remains the most natural-feeling in any digital art app. The 100,000+ asset library is unmatched. The perpetual license model, even with the 10% price increase, is dramatically more favorable than Adobe's subscription-only approach.
If you make comics, manga, webtoons, or illustration, CSP is the tool. The only question is PRO vs. EX, and that comes down to whether you need multi-page management. For single illustrations and one-page comics, PRO at $63 is sufficient. For professional comic production, EX at $277 is the investment that pays for itself.
